Apple Releases New MacBook Pros with Santa Rosa

Well it isn't so much that the releases were free upgrades, a lot of it has to do with Apple wanting to immediately move new hardware and not having it held up by people waiting for a low profit OS.
Apple makes a very strong margin on hardware sales but makes little or nothing off of OSX. OSX is the gold ticket that moves Apple hardware and makes it unique.
Apple has recently updated the Mac Pro, MacBook, now the MBP and rumor has it new hardware (iMac?) at WWDC. Apple doesn't want high margin hardware setting on the shelf waiting for a low margin OS.
The reason it will happen after WWDC is because that is where all of the new features will be demoed and the release date will be announced. Steve will almost be forced to give a release date since Apple missed the original release period for the OS.

I am glad you said that. Not to mention, my department put this glue stuff on the bottom of our old G4's and G5's right before we were going to move to a new building... bright idea huh?
When it came time to move the desktops, we just pulled the glued machines right off of the cheap plywood desks, any thief could have done the same. Locks like that are just another step for the thief to take, making the thief take more time to steal something, and offering more time for the cops to catch him/her before they can escape with the loot.

The MacBook Pro and the iMac are always like brothers. The MacBook Pro gets LED backlit display, Santa Rosa, 2GB RAM Standard, and New GeForce graphics, I expect an update to the iMac very soon with these or very similar specs.

I'm running with a 160GB/5400 in my PowerBook and I am happy with the performance. I have about 40GB of music and 10-15GB of photos, so we are in a similar boat. At this point, I'd take the speed over the extra 40GB. Especially knowing that there are 250GB drives out now with bigger and faster ones to be here in the next year. If I got to the point of filling up my drive, I'd store off some photo's on an external.
re: performance increase relative to old models
Just researching performance gains compared to the previous iteration (as opposed to Apple's insistance on comparing against a core duo 17 inch 2.16Ghz) - the best I can do is by comparing the google cached page to the new page:
Old:
Logic pro plugins: 45% faster
Final Cut Pro DV encode & render: 39% faster
Aperture Benchmark total: 25% faster
PyMOL Multiple CPU performance: 17% faster
Now:
Logic Pro Reverb plug-ins: 55% faster
Final Cut Pro DV encode & render: 52% faster
Photoshop 45-filter function test: 39% faster
Aperture Benchmark total: 28% faster

Yeah, I'm probably going to get the 160GB/5400. I don't think it's worth it to pay $150 more for 160GB/7200 and have to wait 4 - 6 more weeks.

Really? Where.... I could use a new one. Trust me... over here at Towson University and Maryland College Park and University of Maryland Baltimore County and many others in the Collegetown Network in Maryland, DC, Virginia, and Delaware... plenty of students do exactly that.
They get up and walk away from their $1100 machines. The library at Morgan State University... a girl asks me to watch her stuff while she went to the bathroom. The entire floor was empty, no one there besides me and her. I looked over to see her stuff.

17" HP laptop, just sitting there. If I were any other person... that thing would have been gone.
College students are careless... period... sh*t... I left my iBook sitting in the office of my girlfriends job... Came back five minutes later..
BAM!
iBook G4 and leather bag GONE.
And yes I want two computers. I want my MBP for on the go anything and I want the heavy lifting of a desktop when I get home. And when my laptop was on the fritz I had my back up, when my power supply on my G5 went up I had my MBP. When you freelance that is money. I am pretty sure there are better videographers and photogs out there that have way more than two... or four.

1. After you buy ADC Student Membership, you need to fax in (or mail in) your current semester course schedule to get your ADC memebership approved. Once this is done (depends on you.. if you call and bug them, it can be done in less than a day... i was able to 😉) you can go ahead and order your mac online or over the phone.
2. You won't get any discount on Apple Care thru ADC

That 4-6 weeks is a killer for sure. Especially for those of us who have been waiting so long for these updates.
It's really cool to see that 250GB option for the 17". Next speed bump should make that available on the 15's - or is that a 12.5mm drive?
"probably" makes it sound like you've got a >50% chance of having your laptop stolen. this is far from the case. maybe it feels that way if you live in baltimore... but most people don't. i lived for years in providence and boston and never even knew anyone who was robbed of their laptop. you'd just hear stories of people who left it out in the library (moronic) and it would be gone when they got back. i agree this is an off-topic discussion that doesn't really belong here, but i just had to respond to that point. you're intent on assuming a priori that portability is not that great and that laptops will probably get stolen, but as has been pointed out, both assumptions are false.

No actually. Portablility is not a bad thing, and yes your laptop will get stolen from you if you are not careful, and yes even if you are careful laptops (like anything else you carry with you) will get stolen. I am not debating this point, why jump in on the wrong post and not know the entire story. Not everyone lives in boston either so what is your point? And New York Chicago, LA, Austin, Tampa Bay aren't cities with crime? Why even comment on this?

You brought up laptop security when I was discussing the validity of Apple's choice to have 128 MB of video RAM.
Got mine already !
Just been and got mine from the Apple store in the Trafford centre, Manchester, spec is just as it says on the website. RRP -5% business discount. 1st customer I believe. Staff say they only found out themselves this morning about the new products, apple must run an amazing cover up to hide 100,000 new laptops.
Nearly bought an old spec one last week for my business but held off after noticing upgrade rumours.

i think there is misinformation floating out there. use google and read the agreement terms for adc student membership. it does not include software pre-releases, and i'm pretty positive there will be no free leopard to student members--or regular students or any other people who aren't paying many hundreds of dollars for their adc membership. unless of course there is some coupon offered post-wwdc next week (unlikely, but it's just a week away to know for sure). so let's just see what happens.
