Which comment?

The security comment was in a broader context of whether or not he would recommend a MBP or iMac to his students. Granted, it's his opinion, but it's based on his experience with machines being stolen, college students and their flaky tendencies, not to mention the hardware as he sees it.

You're talking to a hardware guy then. You can't just tell everyone to buy a desktop. We're not one of your students so your situational experience might not apply here.

The original discussion was over the video RAM in the MacBook Pro. DigitalSkunk tried to derail us (intentional or not) onto desktops Vs. portables and portable security. That wasn't the original point at hand.

I kinda gave up when I got told that the Macbook Pro wouldn't be used for things that needed 512MB of VRAM. 😕

Nothing really recent to compare it with re drive speed, its a 2.4 15 inch.I havent moved off the thing for 3 hours 😀 😀 😀

Running huge RAW files through Aperture from my Nikon D2X at blistering speed. This is AWESOME. (dont forget my last machines a G4 so I might be getting a bit excited !!)

I wanted you to point out how both a desktop (iMac) and laptop (MacBook Pro) both using the Napa platform would be different short of larger the hard drive in the iMac.

You suggested to just get a desktop over the fact that this is a thread about the MacBook Pro and my interest in a laptop.

Video Editing

Since you clearly have experience with this, I'll ask this question of you: is the 4200 rpm 200GB drive too slow to edit DV? I'm looking for a larger drive but am very tired of being tethered to my desk for all purposes. I would mainly be editing off an external FireWire 400, but might capture a project here and there to the internal disc. Am I risking dropping frames even during capture -- nevermind playback -- if I've got a drive that slow?

Honestly. It's not a good idea to edit on the system drive. BUT I think that if you had to the 200GB drive would be fast enough for MOST light editing. People always forget that rotational speed is not the only part of the HDD speed. Higher density drives are always faster than lower density drives because more data passes by the head per unit time. It's very probable that the 200GB 4200 is just as fast as the 160GB 5400. This is just conjecture but i really doubt you'd notice that much of a difference.

It is also a FACT that you may have your laptop stolen if you don't carry it with you, say if you leave it on your desk at home. It means nothing to me.

I have been to conference centers in Atlanta, Texas, California, and most recently Phoenix, where we (yes, more than just me) have left our laptops sitting in the meeting room while we broke for lunch. For the first year I was pretty religious about strapping it to immovable objects with one of those $50 cable locks, but after awhile I stopped bothering. You know that old joke, you don't have to outrun the bear, just the guy you're with.

I have carried my laptop with me in all kinds of unlikely situations, including leaving it in the car for a day or two at a time. Where I live, I don't worry about that. In fact I worry much more about leaving it in the open when I have to leave it in hotel rooms, so I have to find creative places to hide it when I'm out.

Yes, theft is certainly a risk. I'm not so naive as to think it could never be stolen, no matter how careful I am. But the risk is far outweighed by the convenience of having the laptop with me. I have insurance and frequent backups which makes the damage, should my laptop be stolen, that much smaller.

No and no actually. Hardware purchased through the ADC store does not include the deals like the free Nano.

And as others have already said, the software seeds and free OS releases are part of the $500 ADC Select membership, not the $99 student membership which does not include either of those.

I used to edit on an iBook G4 with a 4200rpm drive. But you will have dropped frames and capture, playback and recording... there won't be anyway around it. Even if you get an external drive, FCP won't be able to keep up with the HDD. Get anything that is 5400rpm and above,

Are you using iMovie or FCP? If it is iMovie you shoule be okay... I don't have much experience using iMovie on 4200 rpm drives. If it is FCP or FCX then go for the faster drives.

I own a 17" mbp C2D, and it has color banding issues. I hope they update the 17" to LED backlighting soon so that I can take it to the apple store and hopefully get the display replaced.

No one disagrees... but if you are a student on a budget and not a rich kid with rich parents then it is a big deal. Or if you are a freelancer who has to have a machine at all times it matters. I have two machines, you have insurance, we all find our ways to safeguard ourselves from this, but that desn't mean that laptops are more at risk.

And as I said in a previous comment, a guy running down the street with a MacPro or iMac will look very suspicious, as opposed to the guy that can stuff the book in his coat pocket or bag. Not to mention the iMac is heavier.

But OH.... I am going off topic and derailing everyone from talking about the MBP...

I'm not a rich kid. I'm trying to get the most of my Apple purchase. I don't see a need to spend $500 over the base model when the only significant difference is the video RAM.

An iMac isn't that hard to pick up if it isn't locked down.

If you're buying a new MBP ADC makes sense

Are you positive about that? I had asked the Apple Developer Connection guys about this, and they said software wasn't included with ADC Student memberships.

I'd rather just pay $69 for Leopard (the student price) when it comes out.

I'm under the distinct impression that ADC members get a free copy of leopard when it comes out. At least that's what happened for Tiger (if i'm not mistaken). In any event, If you are buying a new computer from Apple it make 100% sense to get the student membership. It costs $99 but you get an additional $200 off the academic price. SO your net gain is $100 dollars.

I am not attacking Eiderlion... but thank you for this post. I hope we can stop flinging mud around now.... had to deal with that during summer camp... it isn't pretty or good for camera gear.
