Not that I'm in the market--I'm happy with my Macbook which I upgraded to 2GB myself. But the problem is people who upgrade their own comps from 1GB to 2GB won't have anyone to sell the two spare 512MB sticks to since the base model already comes with 2 512's. What a waste of RAM.

Can the MacBook run with only one RAM module? If so, Apple, should offer that option at some "reasonable" price above the 2 512 model. Would running on only one 1GB module decrease performance below the 2 512's?

i think i speak for everyone, will the babies please Shut the Fark up.. its a computer take it or leave it, if you need more eemmmmph in a computer get a macbook pro, or better yet get a refurb its in the price point of what you would want the MB to be and you get all the pro qualities its a no brainier quit crying!

It's sad to see people get confused over the fact that Apple sells best because of their OS.

Most people who care about these specs should just get a MBP and shut up. That is basically saying what they want. A standard consumer is not going to care about these specs. Those who do are being cheap with themselves by not just getting the MBP. They are selling themselves short and then want to complain about it on here.......

urgh.....

You want a better computer, get a MBP. Not that hard of a concept. It is there for a reason.

Until they fit a DVD writer as standard - it isn't. There are PC laptops out there for half the price of the base spec with DVD writers included. When you sell the package as being for home media, then take away the ability to write DVD's - something is wrong.

I bought the cheapest macbook as a refurb last week - love it to pieces - but I still thing Apple are screwing their customers by not including DVD-writers in every model.

Doug

I completely agree, but if you're an average user, have you ever tried to even burn DVDs in Windows? My point: it's difficult, and most of the time it fails, according to my customers (I work at a computer store). While, the MacBooks are more expensive, Apple has equipped them with quality and software and hardware. Optical drives are cheap; had they equipped the lowest end one, they would have sacrificed something else (memory, etc.) and/or raised the price.

Was someone using sarcasm? I don't see any difference in the graphics card currently used by MacBooks as compared to the ones yesterday.

I'll agree with the first paragraph. But I just don't like the paternalistic approach people are taking (and I don't think Apple is thinking this way, as they claim), when they say that people shouldn't want or hope for a mid-range laptop that can do X, Y, or Z, when it's clearly not too far out of the realm of possibility -- though it was probably too expensive for this time around.

People wanted a different mix of price and features than Apple decided on for now. String 'em up! :p

Yes, but as you can realize from the updates today the MacBook is not meant to serve certain purposes.

However, if you are saying that there's a laptop missing in Apple current line-up then I really don't have an opinion, I'm a "desktop" guy , the only thing I know from a fact is that MacBook buyers would like the option of a 15" screen :)

Not after you bought another 1GB stick online for $40 and installed it yourself! :p I think it's a good idea and wish Apple offered a 1GB 1 stick option. I'm tired of spare RAM sitting on the shelf making me feel wasteful.

I've been studying for finals.

Thank you. If only everyone was this reasonable. If they were this thread would have 400 less posts of "WTF NO SR MB?? WHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MOMMY I WANT!!!"

$1100-1500 is not entry level. Entry level laptops are <$800 right now.

First of all the point I made applies to your answer as well so maybe you didn't have time to read it.

Sheesh Wolfpup, its hard to respond to a post that is so long.

But anyway, the thing about entry-level and all of that, you cannot say that it has to be between specific prices. Just like consumer and pro are designated by Apple those price ranges are created by other companies. Just because an entry-level Mac is more expensive then an entry-level Dell does not mean that it is no longer entry-level. My personal definition of entry-level is the type of computer someone might get as their first computer. If someone made a computer for less then $400 would it be sub-entry-level?

Second you said 400-500 for entry-level in your first post, 800 is almost double what a entry-level computer was worth to you 10 minutes ago.

But people making fools out of themselves is great entertainment!

So to summarise the entire thread, :apple: made some minor tweaks to the Macbook to keep it vaguely price-competetive while they flush out their supply chain over the next few months, and everyone on MR is either irate because there were no major updates, or irate that others are irate. A handful of people don't really care anyhow, and the general public don't know anything has happened at all.

Sounds like situation normal to me.

They most certainlly are not "making a fool" of themselves. A 160Mhz "update" isn't worth a 6 month wait.

PAY ATTENTION, ALL WHINERS!

I would like to point out one simple fact that will hopefully tone down the pointless negativity most of you are expressing: there are NO brand-name Santa Rosa laptops under $1200 yet.

True or not, it's completely irrelevant, because notebooks for less can be configured with GPUs that are BETTER than Intel's new video.

So don't complain that Apple is falling behind or being jerks. MacBook feature/price ratio is right in line with all the other brand name laptops.

Like who? Dell, HP, and I think Toshiba all have laptops for that price that have better GPUs, larger screens, better keyboards, etc.

Yes it can, but you're throwing away a ton of performance if you do that. For years Intel has used dual channel RAM configurations. You need to use pairs of identical DIMMS for max performance. It's actually a bigger deal in the Macbook than the Pro, because the Macbook has no video RAM, so all of it's video activity is done in main memory too.

Yeah, the black premium is really lame. I love the black, but how can someone justify paying $200 extra for essentially the same computer (or $150 more once you spec the white MB exactly the same).

This is something I never understood from Apple. I really am curious what their reasoning would be.

Because they can. As long as people keep buying it with the premium then Apple will keep selling it with the premium. As a stockholder I approve, as a consumer I would choose not to buy it and hope that enough others don't so the price comes down.

Not that I'm in the market for a Macbook, I gave up waiting for 'the next big thing' to come out and bought a Mac Pro so that I can expand it with 'the next big thing' whenever it does come out.

I think that Apple is selling everything like hotcakes right now and there is really no business reason to put out significant updates until the market (not you guys, the actual market) tells them that they need to push out a significant update.

where are you getting your ram from?

we offer a reduced price on new ram if we can keep the old stuff.
we can then either resell/retrofit the old ram or send it back to our supplier for a rebate, so it's a real benefit for us to do so. check with whomever you're currently getting ram from, as they may do something similar.

I don't know what the heck your talking about. My point is $1100-1500 is not "entry level", it's well into a mid-range price point.

Ummm.... actually, they are. People like you who are just sitting there multi quoting everything that comes by to complain because you are too cheap to buy a MBP. Or if you want SR so bad but a Windoze computer and call it a day.

Hehe that's funny... Apple puts a Napa board with a GMA950 in the new MacBook after months of waiting... Yeah, right... Hehe, I love the jokes on this board. That's a good one. And its powered by a wet kitten on a treadmill, right?

No seriously, what's the real update?

Apple took these awesome new processors that are just 10 months old and put them into a laptop with year and a half old tech! What an amazing update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111!!!1!

Seriously now, the Napa chipset came out in January 06 and the C2Ds came out in July 06. They could have had this "update" come out last summer! And the base model still doesn't even have a dvd burner. lmao
