They are trolls because they don't agree with your mind set?

Agreed. I think there are just a lot of people venting, not trolling. The difference is that these people really are mac fans and they're just let down because this upgrade means they likely won't get a real upgrade anytime soon. I'd be bitter too if I had been waiting since the beginning of the year for this moment and all I got was a negligible speed boost and a bigger hard drive.

A 7 year old mac with 256mb of ram isn't what i'd call good enough to run OSX. I have a Mac Mini, Core Duo and 512mb of ram which is significantly more powerful than yours and OSX is a dog on it.

call it what you want, but it still works, and it's the computer i use day to day at home. with tiger.

i am about to get a new imac (when they update), but my point is that this computer has outlasted several of my friends pcs. in most cases, coming up to 3 generations of my friends pcs.

Well I'm annoyed....i just bought what was the middle of the range macbook last week and now its the bottom of the line and a fair bit cheaper....I wish they'd share their plans a bit more...

I have to agree with Wolfpup here, this is a pathetic "update" if you can call it that.
HOW can they even justify releasing an "update" when they are updating the computer to an already OUTDATED processor? The SR have been out for a little while and the competition already has PCs on the market...?
This is going to bite :apple: in the @$$ when back-to-school rolls around and all the educational discount types like myself buy a equally-priced but much-better-specked PC from Dell or HP instead of the MacBook.
For many people the $1000 bump to a MBP over a PC is just not possible.

I'm sure we'll see the SR and LED MB update in October/November...but that will be too late and Apple will loose marketshare and have missed a great opportunity. I blame the iPhone ;)

And again, that's completely irrelevant. By market standards, $1100-1500 is mid range, not low end. Until Apple becomes the only hardware manufacturer, we can expect that they try to price things competitively.

Dude/Dudette, this is just a matter of labels. Apple only has two portables, hence the pro/consumer labels. Mid-Range implies at least three options. To lump things together according to price is also irrelevant in some ways. Such as, Apple is the only hardware manufacturer for the OS X operating system.

Keep word is NEED. not want. No one here needs it. Especially considering the performance change is minimal.

1. 800mhz so-dimms aren't exactly mainstream, thus expensive.
2. Wasn't Core 2 supposed to solve the heat problem?
3. No, SR does not give you faster processor speeds the processor is a seperate entitty, the penryn set of chips will work with current boards. The system would be slightly faster overall, but SR is a chipset/mainboard change not a CPU.
4. Turbo Memory, http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/31976/118/
5. Like I said the X3000/3100 offer minimal update in performance. it is not what some of you are makign it out to be.
6. Boot camp, how?

1. right, but in the future they will be and then one will be able to take advantage of that.
2. Heat and energy are constantly improved upon. I doubt you will find someone who brags about how "cool" their laptop runs.
3. SR tops out at 2.4 mhz which is faster then then the prior gen(2.33). The current speed bumps were very low and people are making a big deal about it then this has to be a big deal as well.
4. I did not read your article, however in the end I think Turbo Memory will definitely be a significant plus. I believe that things are currently not optimized to take advantage of it thus getting some negative reviews.
5. The things I have read from here is that its pretty significant. However, I did not go to other sources since I trusted MR.
6. Intel talks about how SR improves support for Vista which I assume some of that probably carries over to bootcamp.

if you want to talk about NEED, then I am sure one could argue that we did not even need Core 2 Duos or when we were at PPC and getting speed. upgrades.

There is a positive side though, finally for the first time EVER, Apples base consumer laptop has a reasonable amount of RAM, and the mid range and higher ones have enough even for demanding users like me.

Because it outlasts for you doesn't mean squat. All it is is how much pain you can put up with. We upgrade our PC's because we can and we like speed.

Yes, I could have a 7 year old PC still up and running XP if I so choose. But why would I? It's as painful as running a modern day Mac Mini with only 512mb of ram. Probably less so. Benchmarks show that XP is faster than OSX on the same hardware.

The macbook is a consumer level computer. It makes no claims to being a gaming computer or a video editing machine. It's designed for people who want to use the internets, email...manage their music, videos, photos, write some papers while listening to music, make stupid faces with the camera and watch dvds while waiting for the plane to start boarding. And the macbook does all these things very well and pleasantly fast, especially with 1GB of memory. It's Mac OS X with more than capable hardware for a reasonable price. And if you want more they have options to upgrade.

As a result of a gamble, I'm currently using a 2001 Powermac g4 running 10.4.9 with a 933 mhz cpu, 133mhz fsb, 1gb of sdram, GeForce 2MX w/32mb GPU. It's crazy loud, power hungry and just an overall eyesore, but it still delivers a damn decent consumer level OS X experience.

Literally days before Apple announced the delay of Leopard, I had just completed the transaction of selling my 9 month old iMac on ebay. The delay of Leopard temporarily screwed my plans up of having a newly designed iMac with Leopard. So now I'll just wait and hope my trusty powermac g4 makes it til christmas.

Bottom line, stop bitching about a great computer, the macbook is great and fast and does what it's advertised to do...if you want higher or "pro" level hardware running OS X you have to get a MBP or Mac Pro.

The upgrade is disappointing to me due only to the Intel 950. The X3100 provides a considerable improvement for a consumer-level laptop, and every HP and Dell will soon have it. I don't buy the argument of 'if you want better graphics, get a MBP'. The X3100 is out. It's a consumer-level graphics solution that sucks less. And now, it looks like that less sucky solution won't be available for the next 6 months.

As for the other updates - they're great! The Macbook has just become much better value (the middle config is $400 Singapore cheaper than the prior black model at the same specs, plus includes a CPU speed bump). Argh.. fix the graphics Apple!

So, considering these don't have it, but will soon how can you assume the MB won't? Typical crap.

You're right!

Let's all have a moment of silence on this historic occassion. :apple:

Get OS X on there! Maybe throw in some more RAM, but 10.4 *will* run pretty darned decently on there (especially if you've got a GPU that accelerates the GUI).

I know a 700MHz G3 was dirt slow under 10.2. Slower than a 533Mhz G4 (with better GPU)...but under 10.4 it's actually pretty snappy, so I'm sure a 500MHz G4 would be too.

That is the designated OS9 CPU. I usually use a MBP running OS 10.4.9, but this is at another location. In fact THIS post is being made from YA location on (gag) a Dell running Win XP. But the internet connection rocks. OC3 ish :) Really helps with this text based posting :)

Back to topic, so the speed comparison was between MB C1D and this 2nd Rev MB C2D (all 4MB Cache BTW). So the "speed bump" is really a "cache bump" as compared to Rev1 C2D MB.

The comparison to older syatems is fair from a marketing perspective since it is upgraders they are selling to. The benefit to upgrading from any Powerbook to this Rev2 MacBook C2D is emmense.

SR is not competition for MB

HOW can they even justify releasing an "update" when they are updating the computer to an already OUTDATED processor? The SR have been out for a little while and the competition already has PCs on the market...?

I'll repeat this one time, then I'm out of here: NO, Santa Rosa is NOT competing with MacBook. Brand-name SR laptops are currently priced above $1500. All the cheaper laptops you see out there are using chipsets equal to the one in MacBook, or more likely even older and weaker.

The bitching here isn't about the fact that the Macbook is a consumer notebook. It's the fact that put in a processor thats only 160mhz faster and still a year old and calls it an "update". They should have done this like 6 months ago, and they should be releasing Santa Rosa now.

Basically what you're saying is that because it's a consumer product, it should have technology that is a year old. Only professionals should get new technology.

Keep word is NEED. not want. No one here needs it. Especially considering the performance change is minimal.

As I've already said, that's not an argument. Most people could get buy with a G3 for most uses. That doesn't mean we expect to see old technology in an "update".

1. 800mhz so-dimms aren't exactly mainstream, thus expensive.

He/she listed the 800-Mhz FSB, they said NOTHING about 800Mhz RAM.

2. Wasn't Core 2 supposed to solve the heat problem?

Power management can always be improved upon.

3. No, SR does not give you faster processor speeds the processor is a seperate entitty

Of course it does. SR based systems can use an 800MHz FSB and slightly speed bumped chips.

4. Turbo Memory, http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/31976/118/
5. Like I said the X3000/3100 offer minimal update in performance. it is not what some of you are makign it out to be.

A minimal improvement is still a great thing in ultra-low end hardware. The Flash RAM thing hasn't been too useful on Vista, but I'd expect Apple to use it better.

6. Boot camp, how?

Mainly because of the better GPU.

A classic Flame bait post above.

Yep. I'm really surprised by the level of immaturity shown today. No one can seriously defend this as a great update...yet these trolls are slamming anyone expressing their displeasure.

Apple IS the only manufacturer whose laptops run OS X.
(legally)

But not the only computer maker. They can get away with a bit of a premium, but only to an extent. Most people look at the hardware, and aren't going to pay much more for OS X...in fact a lot of people are scared off by it. That's the reality of the market Apple exists in.

I don't care about the MB. I'll come right out and say that. It does not do what I want it to. It's a consumer computer.

I am getting a MBP. I want to be able to video edit and do graphics and play games and whatever on it. It has what I want. The things that the MB does not that you guys are complaining about. Soooo in the long run.... what you really want in the MB is a MBP. So the simple solution would be to just get the MBP.

As has already been stated repeatedly, people expected a modest bump in features-a new integrated GPU, etc. We have every right to be disapointed by a non-update. Not one person has described wanting a MBP as a MB.

Watch who you call a fool.

You've called me a fool, you've insulted every reasonable person in this thread, but when I point out that YOU look like a fool for defending this and your insults, you can't take that? Geez.

The MB is a consumer computer. The amount of people buying it do not care about the specs. Those who do..... are getting or already have a MBP.

True for some people, but people who do care about the specs also compare them to other computers.

Have my children?? :p

You'll still have people shoot you down on this. Blind ignorance.

Yeah, let's blame the iPhone! lol

Anyway, I guess even I (not on the market) was waiting for a bigger update, especially because of the hype generated here on MR these past few months and the little image that Apple put on their website on 01/01/2007, "Welcome to 2007" bla bla... I guess everyone was hoping for a drastic improvement in everything Apple and so far we've seen too little of that, leopard delayed, no upgrades (or normal ones)... I don't know, I'm very happy with my 24" iMac but a part of me understands the disappointment, it's just that some people complain in a very strange way... I dont understand the "I'M BUYING A SONY, GRRRR" kind of reaction...
