Apple Releases New MacBooks

At the risk at being flamed ..... again  I really don't think comparing Macs to Win machines is fair. You're talking two different architectures of which each OS is built. Have you considered the hardware requirements for Vista and compared it to OS X? Sure you could get a beefed up Win machine, but for Vista alone you need it. Macs don't need to be so chunky in order to run efficiently and better than the current line of Win machines.

Quit your complaining folks and rest in the knowledge that whatever Mac you own is infinitely better than the majority of Win machines out there.

Indeed... for those that remember those slow arse G4 laptops this holds true. They were worlds slower than the P4s, but with OS X and other Apple apps, they screamed. With Photoshop and other high end programs, they suffered, but Mac OS X more than made up for that speed loss, I would rather use a G3 Lombard running OS 9 than Vista any day.

It's funny because everyone got so carried away with...the dream of something huge and were let down at what was released.

Isn't it customary for Apple to do big updates at its official shows rather than like this? I'm happy that Apple have seen fit to update their MB line because the former ones were certainly lacking, but I will still wait for a while to see what Herr Jobs has to offer at WWDC.

Does the MacBook look any different right now (after update)

Don't state an image with models of the MBP does tell you they won't put a new processor in it. Updates proberly will be on the inside, not on the looks...

They name the imagefile (all the books in the same image) family_lineup20070515.png so I dont see why they should change that picture once more to accomodate new MBP specs a few minutes later. New MBPs will surface june 15th.

Apple under no obligation to satisfy a potential customer? Like I said, what a stinking attitude.

They'll go to reasonable lengths to satisfy actual customers. They won't bend to the whims of any one potential customer.

Yes, there are PC laptops that offer SR already. It's a much larger market with many more models available. And if you want a lot of options for your laptop, then go with a PC. Apple puts a lot of time and money into choosing a small selection of very good machines so that customers aren't confused and the experience is consistent. That's the trade-off, and they aren't in business to satisfy your whining.

And you guys do realise that this update will be the MB for the next 6+ months? Not using SR may not seem too bad now, but in 3-4 months when EVERY other laptop will be shipping with it then it may be a big deal.

Because they will have slightly faster processors (maybe) and x3100 over the 950gma? If you need graphics power the macbook isn't for you.

You can't use logic on some people. Not trying to insult Mouse, but he is just made right now. He has been waiting 6 months for an update and he didn't get what he wanted. Like I said, it's like not having something for a long time just because you think it will be better if you wait, then once you get it, it sucks and you are pissed off for waiting so long.

Thank you for understanding, instead of being a jerk like a lot of you guys.

It is not over until the JAPAN store comes online. It is Japan's market that's not buying MacBooks/Pro's because they are used to Ultra-Portables mainly.
Did you see the latest Apple 10Q? The drop in Japan net sales came from decreases in the desktop and iPod segments. Portable sales are up there.

i would assume that if we really wanted to know what else is being released we could call the apple store... wouldn't they have the info while the online store is being updated?

Aside from the Combo drive, it's a solid MB update. Very typical with how they update the line.

Faster processors, larger HDD, more RAM for the same price and people are complaining.

LOL

Fact of the matter is, for the majority of buyers (not rabid disciples), this is a solid update. Your general consumer has no idea what Santa Rosa is.

I know what Santa Rosa is, and I don't see why it would be a big deal for me.

As for the Combo drive, go to Lenovo, Dell of HP's websites. They all offer these for their low-end.

If they had given me SR I would have been able to buy one. With what they've given me I can't.

Why not? Have you taken a sacred oath that "I shall only buy computer that has Santa Rosa"?

So for me, absolutely these updates suck.

Yeah, because they are 10% slower than SR-version would be.

They mean no MB for me. And since that's the only Mac I'm interested in it means I'm stuck with a crappy wintel. Probably a Sony.

Good luck with your chosen path.

I expect Apple to remain competitive.

And if their competitors offer a laptop that has a CPU that is teeny-tiny bit faster, it means that Apple is not "competetive" and they therefore suck?

When all other manufacturers are announcing Santa Rosa laptops I expect something similar from Apple if they want me to buy their computers.

What do you expect to get with SR that you can't get with current MacBook?

Your attitude stinks.

No, your "Hey, I'm ENTITLED to stuff!"-attitude is what is stinking in here.

You act as if Apple doesn't want me as a customer.

Sure they do. But that doesn't mean that they are required to satisfy your whims.

If Apple doesn't give me what I want I buy elsewhere.

Go right ahead.

Which is bad for Apple since it's a lost customer.

Well, isn't that a shame?

I play WoW, so with the integrated graphics I would most certainly have seen a difference. And it's why I can't buy a MB.

So, you want to play WoW with a low-end laptop that uses integrated Intel GPU? Yeah, good luck with THAT.

Apple under no obligation to satisfy a potential customer?

No they are not. They offer a range of products. If those products suit you, great. If they don't, tough.

And you guys do realise that this update will be the MB for the next 6+ months? Not using SR may not seem too bad now, but in 3-4 months when EVERY other laptop will be shipping with it then it may be a big deal.

This is a good point. Apple will really need to do another update fairly soon to stay competitive. I say a month or two after the MBP gets SR (which better be soon given the premium that laptop carries) then the MB should see the update. Apple is ALWAYS behind the times on tech so today's update doesn't surprise me.

I'm not trolling. I've been waiting since November for this update to buy my first Mac. I was ready to order today.

While all other manufacturers are announcing their brand spanking new SR laptops Apple give us this and you call it a "solid update".

I think everyone can agree that this update stinks. Slightly faster, last gen CPUs. Brilliant.

When all comparable laptops are shipping with SR and DVD burners as standard we'll see how "good" this update is, eh?

Like what? I just hopped over to sonystyle.com, and there are cheaper laptops but they lack the same features. Sure, the N series is cheaper and has a DVD burner, but they use the Core Duo processor with half the cache. They also have no 802.11n, no magsafe, no POWERED firewire, and it weighs 6.5 pounds(!).

*sigh*

Apple makes by and large wonderful computers but some of their fanatics are the biggest idiots I have seen in any place.

These idiots have no concept of economics. do you understand how expensive Santa Rosa is right now? Furthermore, there just isn't enough supply to put that into MBs anyway.

These guys think Apple is a charity company. They are not. They are for-profit corporation. How they expect a top-end system at $1100 is beyond me.

If you look at PC market, there are really good cheap notebooks but then if you wanna buy the top-end stuff, you have to pay over $3000.

I don't blame Steve Jobs treating some of fanboys like garbage because they are garbage.

oh by the way, you want Santa Rosa MB with 2GB RAM 160gb HD and onboard graphics? you can get it.....in 18 months. Go away and come back then you buncha trolls.

At the current price of memory (DDR2 is at an all time low right now), Intel price cuts on all C2D, this makes for a very uninspiring update. Combo drive on a £700 laptop ($1400), with no option to upgrade?

That is very harsh.

**Edit**

And the black MacBook has a faster superdrive than the 15" MBP. Sort it out Apple, that really is a massive oversight.

means no mac book update at WWDC, they wouldnt release a new upgraded MB laptop and then make it obsolete within a month with Santa Rosa. Guess Santa would be available on the new MBP only. Good work apple, cannibalize yr MB for the MBP, like the $1000 price difference isnt enough to differentiate the two products already.

If they had given me SR I would have been able to buy one. With what they've given me I can't. Therefore no Mac for me, no matter how badly I'd like one.

So for me, absolutely these updates suck. They mean no MB for me. And since that's the only Mac I'm interested in it means I'm stuck with a crappy wintel. Probably a Sony.

I expect Apple to remain competitive. When all other manufacturers are announcing Santa Rosa laptops I expect something similar from Apple if they want me to buy their computers.

Your attitude stinks. You act as if Apple doesn't want me as a customer. If Apple doesn't give me what I want I buy elsewhere. Which is bad for Apple since it's a lost customer. You're acting as if I'm lucky to get anything at all from Apple, as if I owe them something. I owe them nothing and neither does any consumer.

I play WoW, so with the integrated graphics I would most certainly have seen a difference. And it's why I can't buy a MB.

Apple under no obligation to satisfy a potential customer? Like I said, what a stinking attitude.

You will get a ton of crap from people here if you say anything bad about Apple. It is funny honestly. Sure, Apple stock is going up.. but that doesnt mean best choices are made or that it could not be going up even faster/better.

I feel you. For 1100-1500 you can buy a 15" PC as fast with a graphics card. If you want to play games on the laptop a PC is a no brainer (in this price range). It would make sense for Apple to make MB able to play games with the whole bootcamp thing now. They are missing out on that market at that price range big time. I guess Macbooks will be updated for this soon.. just not at least for another 6 months. Better late then never I guess.

Btw games run really great on my MBP.. perhaps you should search ebay for a MBP. You can get 15" MBP (first gen) for higher end MB price.

All hail KingofAwesome! :)
Best post of the day.

Thanks! I'll be iChatting my acceptance speech. Everyone who has purchased Apple products and aren't whining about new chips that came out last week is welcome to attend. Cheese will be served. Mac and Cheese.

Indeed... for those that remember those slow arse G4 laptops this holds true.

Rubbish.

They were worlds slower than the P4s...

Rubbish.

With Photoshop and other high end programs, they suffered...

Definately COMPLETE rubbish.

My PB G4 is faster than my current Intel system at quite a few things, and comparing photoshop performance to a top of the line P4 system I use running Windows, it is much much faster.

these same idiots who have been crying over lack of Santa Rosa will be crying 6 months from now that their MBs don't have Penryns.

plus, I can guarantee you that 95% of idiots who was whining about no Santa Rosa were NOT going to buy MB anyway, even if it shipped with Santa Rosa with 160gb HD for $499.

Hopefully it's still coming today. Finland store surprisingly only has 2 Macbook models for sale (lowend white and the blackbook), so perhaps Apple is playing tricks with us and will release more models later today.

There was a rumor about 5 new models, so if there are only 2 MB's, then what are the 3 others? Macbook Mini and two Macbook Pro's perhaps?

Thats true! Its still possible !

While I'm not "mad" at these updates (I'm happy with my Rev A. MB 1.83Ghz CoreDuo with a 60Gb HDD and a combo drive), they are just that, updates.

This thread is incorrectly titled.

Dont think MB think MBP and MacMini.

What about them? MBP will most likely move to SR, whereas Mini will most likely move to 1.83 and 2GHz C2D's.

We are paying customers that puts us in the position.

To what position? To make demands? Well, go ahead and make demands. That still doesn't mean that Apple is required to satisfy your demands. Don't like the products they are offering? Shop elsewhere.

I think that some people in this thread don't understand how valuable OS X is. :)

If I needed a new laptop, I would have bought a Macbook yesterday, with the old processors, and all, 'cause it's the cheapest one that runs OS X.

is it just me or is the store STILL down its been down for over 3 and a half hours!!! this is a little odd for a little speed bumb on the macbooks is it not?

hey team,

i've been watching this (and the other) thread develop over the last hour.
during that time, the aussie apple store has been offline completely, and apple have pdated the specs on the australian site, as well as dropping the price on the macbooks.

so far.

i just wanted to say these things:

1 - now, the top of the range macbook is better in some regards (hard drive, optical drive) than the entry macbook pro, whereas before these specs were equal. apple appear to have finished updating the macbooks, but the store is still down (or, in some cases, down for the second time in an hour). i think this is because

2 - we can reasonably expect some sort of update to the macbook pros, at least to better the macbook updates. take this with a grain of salt, because i saw a simple suggestion like this made over an hour ago turn into everyone expecting santa rosa updates and five colours for all macbooks and macbook pros, and just look what actually happened, people, this is a rumor site. you are advised to take everything here with a grain of salt.
(so quit complaining already. apple didn't even say they were updating anything. you all assumed!)

3 - i work for an apple reseller in australia, and we have access to a stock report from apple, basically so we can give rough eta's to customers wanting to order out of stock or custom build machines. now, we ran out of stock on imacs and macbooks this week, and we're very, very low on macbook pros. we have many orders for all these items, and apple normally deliver on orders extremely efficiently. also, the stock report does not say when new stock can be expected for any of these items. normally, that only happens to one or two units (not the whole product line at once) for about 12 hours, when it's then updated because the factory has put out a whole bunch of fresh ones. when a product line is updated, e.g. macbooks, all models in that line do not give expectations for new stock. for the last 4 days, macbooks, macbook pros and imacs have all been missing new stock expectations. this is not hard evidence in and of itself of an update, but given that the macbooks have just been undated, and that we've been out of stock on these models for a little while, says to me that it's not a bad climate to keep your fingers crossed.

4 - i can't stress this enough, because you have no idea what apple is about to do, and neither do i. **don't hang your hopes and dreams on unannouced updates**
