Connected it to MacBook and it got updated. It was showing 174.0.0.0 before the upgrade. Also, MagSafe charger was not functional during the upgrade.

Magnets strength seem to have improved a lot after the upgrade ;)

I had it attached to MacBook and the phone on it — old firmware showing. The adapter “reset” ie bcame unavailable for about half minute and came back with new update.

So does it need to connect to a Mac to get the update via the USB C connection? Or will it eventually also update while powered through a power brick and attached to an iPhone?
It needs to either connect to a Mac or a ipad and then the update happens quickly just plugged into the power outlet and with phone on it has nothing happening in fact mine was back to original firmware so there was no update since my 12 and 13 phones.

I am using a third party USB cable to make the Magsafe longer, connected to the Mac: when doing that, it was not updating. I plugged the Magsafe with no third party cable to the Mac directly and it was instantly updating it: the Magsafe turned off for a few second (the iPhone was not charging) then went back to normal charging.
Same process using the regular apple USB-C cable not third party. Just a few seconds on Mac and the firmware was quickly updated and charger back to charging my 13 ProMax

Well, I had no idea these would update.

I have two, that we bought nearly day one - so they’re as old as they come.

They’ve only ever been plugged into their power bricks beside the bed and one of them has updated and one of the has not.

On one side of the bed I am still at 174, but the other side of the bed is 247.

So they will update without a connection to a computer.

What I don’t know is why one of mine updated and the other one is not…

Although reading through these comments it looks like 174 version even means that it has updated at least once since we got them.

Again - they’ve never been plugged in to computers.

Overnight the other one updated and now both of mine are at 247.

No computer needed.

I use them. I have one stuck to my desk and another in car stuck to a magnetic windshield mount with the cable hidden in the left pillar so I can just snap phone to it and have GPS display at eye height on left side by pillar.
Any chance I could get a picture of the car mount? Sounds interesting.

I wanted to address the comments about the firmware vs. version number. In the Settings app, you'll see a version number and not the firmware number. The new version number is 247.0.0.0.

I've updated the article with this information, sorry for any confusion we caused by listing just the firmware.

hmmm, Mine too is "as old as they come". It's at 171 (model number A2120, Hardware version MPFW) using the OEM cable/charger plugged into the wall. Im guessing the hardware version is the OEM release "Manufacturer Production Firmware"?

Been checking it every so often today while still plugged in and charging, no update? Wonder if it needs to be charging over night to get the update?

"There is also no clear method for updating a ‌MagSafe‌ charger's firmware, but it needs to be plugged in and connected to an Apple device for a firmware update to initiate."

bummer, I'm still on the old software

Since there's no interface to see what the MagSafe Charger is doing, I wonder what would happen if one were to unplug it while it's updating? Does it brick the charger? ?

its one of those smaller ones where one side is suction cup and the other side is a circle magnet that can swivel in any direction. The extension part is maybe a couple inches. The one I bought years ago has a strong magnet to hold up the iPhone on a bumpy road but the MagSafe puck sticks to it hard so no need to put double sided tap on it. Then I just remove the left car pillar, run the MagSafe cable along the edge to not interfere with airbag in pillar, and down through the rubber plastic gaskets and into the fuse box. Took it on a 1,000 mile road trip, no problems. My windshield even has 3M tint on it and the suction holds tight. I do use the iPhone mini though. Look on Amazon and ick one of those mounts up. There are 1,000 of them now. When I bought mine in 2014, it was maybe the only option. Just try to get one where the mount magnet is a circle and almost the size of the MagSafe circle.

Has anyone successfully updated the MagSafe Battery Pack? If so, then how?

[Update] Disregard. I was able to successfully update the MagSafe Battery Pack to version 2.5.b.0. Used the same method as I did with the MagSafe Charger (Connected to my Mac via USB-C). NOTE: While the MagSafe Battery Pack updates, your iPhone will show the Battery Pack's charge to drop to ZERO. About a minute or so later, it returns with the update and the proper charge level is shown.
