So where are people seeing this delivery or ship date of 8/2 ??? I just ordered a 2.5 and I thought it said shipping in July, but that may not have been an accurate estimation. What's the deal??
Duff-Man says...I ordered my Dual 800 back on the day they were announced and it had a ship estimate of 8-10 weeks if i recall correctly, but they but they shipped it in about 6 weeks or so....sometimes they really do post "conservative" estimates and then beat them....oh yeah!

haha...thanks duffman

That's why I went ahead with the dual 2.0. I would much rather have a dual 2.5, but I need this system by early July - and my reseller told me he didn't expect to receive any until August. Also - you must take possession to get the Brillian Display's discount. I would rather have a cheaper machine in hand, with a discounted 23" cinema display than wait for weeks on end for a slight performance increase. According to apple, its only one more real time stream in FCP, I think I'll survive.

Brilliant Savings Terms & Conditions

It seems you won't take possession of your computer until August!! So maybe you should Call Apple to see if you can still get the rebate for the Display. It would be sad if you couldn't.

Nor will a PIII 1.13 Laptop make me much money in video editing and media encoding.

Before you go slamming others, try to understand the situation better.

I checked out the Apple Store also for a 2.5 G5. Wanted to see what it would cost with my options. It gave me a July delivery date also. I wonder if they would still honor the $500 Cinema Display rebate?

Placing my Order on the 26th

I just talked to the apple rep on the phone. They said if you order a G5 and the display before the deal is over you get the $500 off the display. So I will order mine on the last day, then if they come out with anything new in the next couple of days I can change my order. Its not like the computer will ship between now and then anyway, so I can wait to order.

Now I just need to decide if I want the 9800XT or stick with the 9600XT?

I called Apple--they told me that it should ship much sooner than that.

I think they gave themselves plenty of head room so they won't end up in trouble if the systems do take that long to ship.

I'm betting that Jobs will announce that they are shipping at WWDC just to get some applause.

They are both great... The 9600XT is still a $200 graphics card, not bad at all.

Fed Ex Ground was here 10 minutes ago....

And, they dropped off my 1.8 Dual Refurb that I bought on Thursday Morning for $1799! All I can say is... "FINALLY, I HAVE A BADDASS MACHINE!"

OK, ummmm, gotta go. Stuff to unpack, read, and playwith!

Later

:D

Oh my lord! I was just on the phone with an Apple Rep. to change my order, all I wanted to do was add the Bluetooth Module + Apple Wireless Keyboard & Mouse selection instead of just the bluetooth w/ no wireless keyboard and mouse since you save money b/c I was eventually going to buy the Apple wireless keyboard and mouse... I saved like $100... anyways that change took and hour because the rep didn't realize that you must disable the bluetooth option to get the Bluetooth Module + Apple Wireless Keyboard option under the keyboard selection menu thingy... Anyways that took an hour, I was hoping they would give me something free or whatever, but no, but I made it and was (unusually) patient...

Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHz
Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5
160GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
8x SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
512MB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 2x256
AirPort Extreme Card
Mac OS X - U.S. English
ATI Radeon 9600 XT w/128MB DDR SDRAM
Bluetooth Module + Apple Wireless Keyboard & Mouse

By the way that's a new option for the new PM's under the keyboard selection menu... Didn't notice at first...

Heh heh - I checked out your sig and became concerned when I read "Dell Inspiron 8000 PIII 700" and thought this is what you were referring to. You had me there for a second before I continued reading! ;)

Yeah As much as i love my Dell as i am typing on it now, i reall can't wait to switch, it was well worth the wait, and i hope to be working a lot quicker once i get the PM. All i have to do now is to wait fore the new displays.

The computer might not, but you might want to check the display's shipping...it's "Same day." If you enjoy 10% restocking fees on a couple thou, be my guest.

Here's the educational route I think is best:

Just the stock 512 MB RAM (2x256) Expand with 1 GB Sticks @ $225 (18004memory.com sells 2 GB kits for $450)

250 GB HD (+$90) Fair difference ($1/GB) to max out that drive.

Combo (-$90) then buy a Pioneer DVR-107 for the saved $90 plus $10, swap them out and put the Apple Certified Combo in a FW Case.

Airport Extreme (+$89)

Bluetooth + Apple Wireless Keyboard & Mouse (+$89) Saves $99 - trade off here is you do not get wired keyboard nor mouse. But I have two extra USB keyboards and use a Kensington Turbo Mouse so I'd like to try the Bluetooth Keyboard to see how it goes.

.Mac Promo (+$69.95) saves $30

APP for PowerMac (+$199) New Liquid Cooler insurance.

$3145.95

Any suggestions?

Hey, I didn't get mine with the 56k modem. I was thinking and wondering if that was a good idea....

Is there really any GOOD reason to have a phone modem these days?

Also, how upgradable are macs? I got the 9600 XT thinking I could just upgrade it when something better than the 9800 XT comes out... is that possible?

I'm a switcher in case you couldn't tell. lol

The sales guys don't know anything about the promo... in fact half the people I spoke to, and it was quite a few, didn't even realize there was a postmark due date!

Anyway, they gave me the Promo Teams number, unfortunatly they were closed when I called Friday. They open back up Monday morning. I encourage everyone this might effect to call, so that they realize how much of an issue it really is.

That number: (866) 275-0768
Hours: 7am - 5pm (CST) // M-F

We shouldn't be penalized for spending MORE money!

Duff-Man says...If you are not on dial-up for your internet services then the only use for a modem is probably for faxing if you ever have that need....the video *should* be upgradable easily, but always check the specs on the card you want to upgrade to just to be sure....oh yeah!

You might not need it now, but if you move someplace where broadband isn't available you might need it later.

http://www.barefeats.com/rad9800s.html

RobArt Morgan has posted Performance Graphs for the Radeon Cards compared to the Geforce Fx 5200. I find it very interesting that he points out that the Radeon 9800XT for the PC occupies only it's AGP slot and does not obstruct any PCI slots also According to initial reviews even the newest Radeon X800 XT for the PC occupies only one slot. I wonder what makes this Mac Edition 9800 XT require so much space while it really is just a slightly Overclocked 9800 Pro makes me wonder if heat is that big of a Problem in these new machines in Particular with the Dual 2.5. The Graphs also speak for themselves the Geforce Fx 5200 is a joke. Perhaps Apple should have abandonned the Nvidia Card Completely in this Power Mac Update. It would have been better if the Dual 1.8 and 2.0 was equiped with the 9600 64MB version standard and the 9600XT 128MB in the Dual 2.5Ghz with the 9800XT as a BTO option across the line. I'm hoping that ATI will announce an X800 card for the mac and I hope they will release one by the end of the year.

My instinct is to pay more for the 2.0 G5, because in four years I will be shopping for upgrades that take advantage of the 133 Mhz PCI-X slot. Then again, I suspect that Rev. C of the G5s will jump to PCI Express. While I am certain the 33 Mhz PCI slots will be downright ancient in no time, I wonder if PCI-X is destined for history's dustbin, with no vendors supporting the thing in just a few years.

Any strong opinions or fortune tellers out there? Thanks in advance.
I'm tempted by the dual 2.5, but I'll probably wait for the Rev. C as well, PCI Express being one of the main reasons. It's already working its way towards technology's dustbin, everyone (except Apple so far) is moving to PCI Express. I think it's safe to say you're going to have a very hard time finding PCI-X cards in four years time, or even two years time if you're shopping for high-end graphics/video cards. I need to see some innovation on the PowerMacs before I drop three grand on one: PCI Express, two FireWire 800 ports (preferably on separate controllers), more internal space for hard drive storage (4-5 bays), a design that does not require blocking a slot to install a high-end graphics card (and 4 slots would be nice too), and for Pete's sake fix the bloody chirping/audio problems. Plus more trivial things like a keyboard and multibutton mouse that actually match this machine, and not one manufactured five years ago.

2.5 GHz is not a problem, the other stuff is.

I really couldn't agree more. Posters have been asking what I would need a 2nd optical drive for or more hard drive expansion, better video - etc. . But whether I need them or not right now is not the point. I don't want to pay $3000 for a machine without the lastest technology and have to buy again sooner than I would like. I really would like some value for my money.

By the way, who is it at Apple who insists on telling Mac users that their machines don't need a second full size optical bay. In recent machines, only the Quicksilver had one. I don't get it. A second optical bay is extremely handy for me and I suspect for many others, but there seems to be some kind of internal opposition to it. Why? Who at Apple has this anal phobia.

PCI-X is designed to support 3.3V signaling and Universal 33MHz and 66MHz PCI cards.

Does anyone know--is PCI-X backwards compatable? If you plug a PCI card in to it, will it work?
Not unless they are 3.3 volt. From the white paper "PCI-X is designed to support 3.3V signaling and Universal 33MHz and 66MHz PCI cards." You need to check with the manufacturer of the card to be sure it will work in a G5.
