Not unless they are 3.3 volt. From the white paper "PCI-X is designed to support 3.3V signaling and Universal 33MHz and 66MHz PCI cards." You need to check with the manufacturer of the card to be sure it will work in a G5.

So not all PCI cards are 3.3 Volts?

Having Two Opticals With Your G5 Is Not Difficult Nor Much Money

I really couldn't agree more. Posters have been asking what I would need a 2nd optical drive for or more hard drive expansion, better video - etc. . But whether I need them or not right now is not the point. I don't want to pay $3000 for a machine without the lastest technology and have to buy again sooner than I would like. I really would like some value for my money.

By the way, who is it at Apple who insists on telling Mac users that their machines don't need a second full size optical bay. In recent machines, only the Quicksilver had one. I don't get it. A second optical bay is extremely handy for me and I suspect for many others, but there seems to be some kind of internal opposition to it. Why? Who at Apple has this anal phobia.
While I agree with you, it is not very much money to have two opticals. Just buy the Combo Optical with your G5 and then with the $90 saved, buy a Pioneer DVR-107 8x DVD±RW (this is the model Apple uses), swap it out with the Combo and put he Apple certified Combo in an external FW Case. Then just place it on top of your G5 and you're good to go for only an extra $75-$85 including the FW case.

Hey, I didn't get mine with the 56k modem. I was thinking and wondering if that was a good idea....
my dsl has about 99% uptime. so i use my modem 1% of the time.

Most of the people complaining on this site are probably 12 year olds posting from their parent's Dell. They're never going to buy anything, because their net worth is $46.15.
1) ha!
2) i really wonder how many people buying new g5s have a net worth that's even less than that...

ATA Drive with Sonnet Tempo ATA 100 card in a G5?

I currently have a Blue & White PowerMac G3, for which I bought a Sonnet Tempo ATA 100 PCI card to attach a second hard drive.

This works fine but I am about to buy a G5, which can only accept Serial ATA drives, and has PCI-X slots.

So, I am wondering if I can still use my existing hard drive that’s in my G3, with the Sonnet Tempo ATA 100 card in the G5.

I’m not sure about voltage and all the rest of it, so I don’t know if:

a) the Sonnet Tempo ATA100 card can be used in a G5 with PCI-X slots, and

b) an ordinary ATA drive (IBM Deskstar 60GB) will work in a Mac that only takes Serial ATA drives, if connected via the Sonnet Tempo ATA 100 card.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I don't wanna fry the card, G5 or hard drive trying it out!

Thanks

Is there really any GOOD reason to have a phone modem these days?

Also, how upgradable are macs? I got the 9600 XT thinking I could just upgrade it when something better than the 9800 XT comes out... is that possible?

I'm a switcher in case you couldn't tell. lol

I think that I would go ahead and get the 56k modem. You never know your you might need to use one.

The G5 has both PCI-X and standard PCI.

The card should work, your only issue will be finding space for the drive. I don't know, but the ribbon cable might block airflow or something...

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

So, will a non-Serial ATA drive work in the G5 if it's connected with the Tempo card then?

Also, the spec on the Apple site says the Dual 2.0Ghz (which I've ordered) has 2 PCI-X slots and doesn't mention standard PCI, so will the card work in this model??

Thanks

It should--like I said earlier, the only issue I see is the ribbon cable blocking air flow.

Great, thanks again! The ribbon cable is indeed something to consider.

So, I think I've established that PCI-X also supports standard PCI but only 3.3volts, but I can't find any info anywhere to tell me whether my Tempo card is 3.3v or 5v...!

If I'm using it in my B/W G3 does this mean it must be 3.3v?

Sorry if this sounds thick but I'm worried about damaging something if it's not compatible!

Sonnet Tempo ATA-100 PCI Card Will Probably Work According To Sonnet Tech Support

Sonnet Technical Support Says Yes. Why Didn't You Call Them? 949.472.2772

No drivers are needed and the card is 3.3 volts. So they say they have not tested it themselves but see no reason why it would not work. Good Luck!

Get The Modem

It's an insurance thing. Resale value is higher with it in. You never know when you will be somewhere where DSL isn't. When DSL goes down, you can use it as a backup way to the Web. If you ever need to receive or send a FAX, ya gotta have that modem. Putting one in later or external will be way more expensive and time consuming all the while you curse the day you decided to save a few bucks not foreseeing the circumstances when you will need it. And I guarantee you that time will come.

I doubt it will work. Put the ATA drive in a FW Case and hook it via FW cable. The problem is that most PCI cards don't use the same voltage as PCI-X (3.3 volts). The other problem is drivers for the card. Just Call Sonnet tomorrow and they will tell you for sure. Let us know what they say. I would bet they say NO.

Yeah, I thought about a firewire enclosure but it's probably cheaper to just buy a new SATA hard drive!

Just thought it'd be a waste to abandon my existing 60Gb hard drive but a firewire case is quite expensive.

And, yes, I'm wondering about the software/firmware for the Tempo card, as I think you have to be booted in OS9, which a G5 can't do!

I have emailed Sonnet but I don't know how responsive or helpful they will be!

Oh well....

It should work. Pci-x supports old pci cards. Since pci is parrellel there shouldn't be a problem besides airflow. Sonnet should have an os x soloution soon.

G5 2.5 Cooling system

Apple-X.net published on saturday some photos of the G5 dual 2.5 watercooling system. The liquid seems to be 80% water.
As apple-X.net is down you can look at: http://www.macbidouille.com/niouzcontenu.php?date=2004-06-12#8768 (in french).

Anyone has experience in watercooling?
How about problems of escape, evaporation or degradation of the liquid?

See this espectacular photo:

You sure about that?
I thought there was one PCI-X 133MHz slot, and 2 PCI-X 100 MHz slots (sharing the same bus speed so if you put a 33 MHz PCI card in one the other runs at 33 MHz).

Maybe you meant that it is PCI compatible?? Which is true. Even then it is not 100% compatibility. And that's one of the reason why Apple needed a G5 on a PCI mobo (the other reason being, IMHO, that they had plenty of the single-1.6 GHz mobos left in stock).

Just wanted to let everyone know that if you purchased a G5 and the 23in HD display, they WILL honor the rebate as long as you made the purchase within the promotional period. That means that even if the computer isn't shipped until 08/02 you can still get the rebate!

If you don't believe me or want proof for yourself, you can call the promotions center @ 866-275-0768.

That's the way they normally do it.

However, I've noticed a lot of people making changes in their orders (I've done the same thing myself in the past). Be careful - making a change in your order might cause a date change for this promotion. Therefore, you'll want to make sure that you have your FINAL order in before the promotion ends.

I can't say for sure whether Apple would consider you ineligible for the rebate if you make a change after the deadline, but why tempt the fates?
