Multimedia said:Upgrading an old G4 is a really bad idea. When Tiger comes out this fall it is going to have even more G5 optimizations in it. FCP, Motion, DVDSP, Adobe CS Suite are all G5 optimized already. Don't try to "fix" your G4. That would be throwing good money after bad. The fix is in for G5's already. And the prices have never been lower than they are right now for an original field tested and proven Dual 2, 130 nm G5. And I'm a guy who was waiting for the 90 nm models to come out with every intention of buying a new one.![]()
CCROO Get The G5 For Sure. If You Don't, You Will Regret Not Doing So Forever. This is a no brainer. I just bought a Refurbished "Old" Dual 2 for $1999 from Apple Friday morning. The fact that you can get one for $100 less is fantastic. UCLA is selling them to students and employees for $1799. This is an outstanding opportunity for all of us in the video editing space to "Go Pro". The dual 2.5 is another Rev.A. Apple didn't fix the FW800 throughput mistake in the "new" more expensive series. The new liquid cooling system needs to be field tested by others. So grab that 130 nm puppy and be grateful you had us to cheer you in the right direction and amazed at its performance capabilities.
One more thing. GarageBand BLOWS on all G4 Macs. You can not have enough power to run GarageBand properly. That is reason #1 to get the most G5 you can afford.![]()

Which do I want for my new G5 2.0?

I Bought Generic 512 sticks @ $77 each x 4 = $308 Plus $1 Insured USPS Shipping. If you go through RAMseeker.com, you may find the lower price. It's the 512 DDR3200 NON-Kit price that yields $77 each. It's tricky to find and get to, but it's there. I am told by their sales person and by their technical support that they are "DEFINITELY" CL 2.5.ccroo said:Dear Folks:

Did You Turn On Smooth Scrolling In The Appearances System Preferences?ccroo said:Thanks for the cheering on! I'm a little intimidated by my new machine but I love it. What a beautiful object this is. Really solid, formidable AND HEAVY TOO!
Unforunately, I have it back in its box in my car (boy my back hurts) and I have to take it back. When I scroll through a list of text the lines sorta wave or ripple horizontally, most notably on the bottom half of the screen. I reconnect my old G4 to my 20" Cinema Display and the text is perfectly solid when I scroll, so the issue relates to the G5. Apple Care had me move them further apart (no help), reset the Power Manager (no help) and then suggested I bring it in. What a bummer. Too bad it isn't a nice little powerbook cause schlepping this thing around is tough!
So far the machine seems faster dealing with images in the finder, opening new windows etc. The damn thing wouldn't let me load FCP 3.0 full version so I haven't had a chance to try that out yet. Apparently loading 3.0 on a G5 is an issue. (Anyone have a solution?) As far as noise goes it's not dead quiet but it's pretty quiet. It sounds like a machine with fans in it, but it doesn't sound like a machine with LOUD fans in it. I don't think noise is going to be a problem.
Be well, all.

Buy the FCP 4.5 Upgrade. FCP 3 Is Missing Many 4/4.5 Applications.
"Use Smooth Scrolling" Is An Option You Need To Turn On In Appearance Preference Pane to achieve Smooth Scrolling. It is not on by default on a new system. It's probably on on your G4. Without it on, scrolling is very jerky and not smooth.ccroo said:AAARRRGGG! What's smooth scrolling?

I have Panther. But it's the principle of the thing.
Called and got the Fulfillment Department number 800.335.9258
If that fails then Sales Support Office 800.676.2775 Will Send 10.3.3 DVD Restore Disk Out.
That fellow who paid $1 to have the airport antennae sent out paid $1 too much. Any missing parts are supposed to be FREE.
Upon Boot Up Comes the PANTHER Welcome. Somebody forgot to throw in the Panther restore DVD. Bums me out cause I want to partition right away.

I was writing the post as the missing 10.3.3 DVD was all I knew about to begin with. I didn't know about all the Bonuses until I wrote the bottom part. Man that reinstall of 10.3.3 from a 1.5 GHz 17" PowerBook Restore DVD took no more than 10 minutes. Amazing! Anyone who thinks that a G5 is more power than they need should see how much faster web graphics show up. I am in G5 nirvana.neonart said:You did great but it sounds a bit like pushing it. Why complain about a CD you didn't get (which you already own) when you got such great free upgrades? Just kinda weird.
If you have 10.3.2 it will not show the DVR-107 as supported. It was 10.3.3, I think that introduced that driver. Just run SW update and you'll be straight.
