I had been speculating earlier in this thread about why Apple was still selling the PowerMac G4 on the Apple Online Store, especially since the G5 has been out for over a year.

Now it looks like the end is near for the PowerMac G4...so anyone who may want to snatch one up before they are all gone better do so soon. Screenshot from the Apple Store:

They should lower the price if they want to sell any of those...

rightly so

I was right in not believing the salesrep on the phone yesterday.
She told me the 2.5 would be for this week but she called me this morning to tel me the obvious : " I am sorry but your mac will arrive more like at the end of july or even the begonning of august "

Damn if you dont know what you are talkin about than you better just say nothing. So sorry guys, false alarm. :( Next time I will call twice to ask if they are shure about their statements.

Altough it was nice of her to call me and stop me drooling in anticipation for this friday. Now I know it. I am in for a very loooong wait.

Converstaion with UK reseller Sales Rep 5 minutes ago.

Me: Hi, I noticed that your website says that you'll have Dual 2.5 G5's in stock in two days. Is this right.

Sales Rep: Err... That's probably stretching the truth a little.

Me: !

Sales Rep: It's more likely to be the end of the month...

Me: !

Sales Rep: ...but you don't know with Apple, they could be here tomorrow!

Me: !!!

Sales Rep: Do you want to place an order for one?

Me: No, I don't think I'll bother thanks.

It just seems that the end of July to first of August is a very firm date. Whookam, do you think that you will place an order in the near future?

Yeah I have one on order from a different reseller which whom I've had good dealings with before. I was just checking out their delivery times because they seemed a little optomistic (if not a blatent lie).

My proper estimate is 19/07 but I think it might change to a later time at some point. Ordered about 10min after reseller had the info on the system and was still number 8 in the queue!

If you don't mind me asking what reseller did you purchase from? Did you order any extras on your G5?

No problem. It was Jigsaw24 (www.jigsaw24.com). They are a UK reseller that cater mainly to creative proffesionals (musicians, designers, photographers, special effects etc.)

I didn't order any extras at the time as I wanted to get it ASAP. I am a proffesional photographer and also own my own creative retouching/effects business so I'll probably bang a few gig of RAM in there and think about updating the graphics card at a later date. As long as it runs Photoshop and Maya and a reasonable pace, I'll be a happy bunny.

Macmall expectations

I mailed a rep at MacMall today, and received the following answer :

Dear Customer,

We're currently expecting them between the 15th and 20th, but that is subject to change.

Well, she leaves it open for change :)
I'll just keep on waiting until I get a phonecall from my reseller (holds phone in hand, ready to answer..)

Well, at most (crosses fingers) three weeks at this point. Who know, maybe we'll be suprised and find our beloved computers at our doorsteps sooner! :D A man can dream can't he?

Yes, hope springs eternal. Life wouldn't be much fun if we didn't have hope. It's always possible that Apple will ship early.

I just hung up the phone with my apple rep, and she told me there's no time yet for the new powermac's to be shipped :( . I placed my order on June the 15th "Powermac dual 2.5, 2 gb ram"

can't wait any longer!!!

If that's true, and it is mid august, i'm asking for compensation, some goodies, maybe a powermate, but good god, don't let it be mid august!

Word! What the hell are they doing with these? Is anyone even buying these. You can get a refurb G5 for the same price! A refurb G5 1.6 Ghz is the same price as 1.25 G4. BOTH SINGLE PROC!

WTF!?

My "Old" Refurb D2 G5 Is Awesome For $1999

Well I got two more 250 GB Hitachi PATA HDs at Frys for $119 each including sales tax after $140 in rebates on each (friend let me use his name and address to get a second rebate). Put one above the Superdrive with a standard two drive ATA cable and one under the Maxtor SATA 233 GB (net) it came with using a Firmtek SATA adapter for $25. Three more down front and I've got 1.4 terabytes (TB) inside. So I spent an extra $308 for 2 additional GB of ram plus the $240 for the extra 466 GB (net) so $2707 for a fairly tricked out 3 GB ram/.7 TB D2 G5 including all sales tax. Amazing!

This is fast enough for me until we get the next big thing - like two dual processors chips - ie. quad processing. Like 4 x 3 GHz = 12 GHz in 2006.

Just how did you place and order on a product that had not yet been announced. I admire your purchase. A new display also?

wdlove : you must be mistaken, cause he ordered a powermac 2.5 on june 15th. I placed mine on june 14th, since the powermacs were announced the 9th I believe?

or were you talking about something else :)

Your correct, I was getting my dates mixed up again. I'm looking forward to getting one of those myself. What is your delivery date? Any added items or a display?

I can't really give you a specific delivery date, as I bought mine from a reseller, and he has no online order status system or something like that. The last time I saw him, he said it could be the beginning of august..

The dual itself is stock, so that would speed things up a little, and I added 1 extra gig of ram, and ordered a 23" alu display to go with it.. Applecare will take care of both my babies :)

That is quit an awesome setup that you have coming. You should get great use and enjoyment. That was very smart to purchase AppleCare at the same time. ;)
