Great. Really screwed a lot of the world on pricing. In the UK, we have 20% VAT, but that doesn't mean that Apple should then scrape an additional £200 on top of this thinking users won't notice.

And don't just say it's more expensive. They are all manufactured in China.

It is more expensive. For example, consumer protection laws in the UK are different (better for consumers), so Apple will in some cases have to fix problems that they wouldn't have to fix in the USA. That doesn't come for free.

If I'm not mistaking I believe I read on Intel's site that you could actually run two displays off of TB. I believe that one of them would be the built-in display. But, in theory, I believe you could run an additional 3 on the 27". Can anyone verify this?

It is no problem, as long as you have a display with thunderbolt in and thunderbolt out ports, so you could plug one monitor into the Mac, the second monitor into the first monitor. Unfortunately nobody builds that kind of display yet. I think other thunderbolt devices that turn up slowly will have both input and output.

I have an external Mac display cerca 2008 with a the apple display port that I hook to my Macbook. When I got a revamped mac book I had to buy a mini display adapter to use it.

I want to get a the new iMac, and want to use my external display still. But I haven't been able to find info on Mini/Display port to Tunderbolt.

I know half the charm of these thunderbolts is running HD video from an external drive and separate monitors. But I haven't found what I'm looking for.

Thoughts?
thunderbolt supersedes display port, but is backwards compatible

External Displays

So back to my original post. How do I connect my apple display to the new iMac when the new iMacs have replaced their mini display ports with thunderbolt?

This is insane. Apple still charges $200 for another 4GB ram:eek:. Is this ram made out of gold or diamonds? 4 GB ram costs $40 for pc.

I already have a better system since January.

-Sandy Bridge i7 2600k @4.2 GHZ
-12 GB RAM 1600MHZ (faster ram than the new iMacs, cost me only $120 for 12GB)
-Ati 5850 ( faster than those mobile gpus )
-Can install OS X 10.6.7 on it, but I don't need it.

It all cost me $500(when I upgraded);)

Those are some HOT iMacs. Really hot. When will they redesign it so that it won't overheat?
And it looks like nvidia is still out:D

When they make the bodies thicker and provide larger intake and exhaust areas with more fans...so, to answer your question: Never.

Anyhoo...Im very glad they included the 6970...fantastic GPU (though Im only familiar with benchmarks of the desktop card...will have to investigate the performance on the mobile version).

Agreed about the Core2 models, but I still think it would depend on the price of the refurbed. There's a 3.33GHz core 2 duo on there for $1040, and a 3.06GHz Core i3 for $930; same GPU different HDD size. The i3 would be the better choice if one weren't able to get the extra $200 or so for a new model.
Quad core across the entire line up hurts the entire refurbished and resale market. Apple appears to be killing the resale value of their older products, iPad and iMac alike.

QFT. My initial post in this thread mentioned the Old Skool Apple because at the very least we've got iMacs that don't offer 80% laptop parts with a nice screen. I'd say we are at 40% laptop parts now.
Far too long. It is only the mobile GPU now.

Given it's Sandy Bridge, curious if that means the 27" might be able to take 32GB.

Don't know if it can, but that would be four 8GB chips, and they are bloody expensive. Probably cheaper to get a MacPro with 32 GB (eight times 4 GB is a lot, lot cheaper than four times 8GB).

Save a few quid...!

...and don't forget, UK buyers can get 3% cashback via quidco! I couldn't see anything that excludes iMacs when tracking the order.

Yeah the gpu is really nice, but until they won't fix the overheating issues I won't get one. It's a really good combo. But for people who torture their pc's the heat is still an issue.

My pc still laughs in the face at these overpriced computers. :D

Why do people like you guys even post in these forums? Those of us in here actually care about iMacs and not your stupid PC's you built

It's so ridiculous what they charge for RAM. People are way better off purchasing it somewhere else and installing it themselves which takes 30 seconds which in my book is less than 200 bones.

MBP TB connect to iMac TB for display

I'm assuming that someone with a fairly current MBP would be able to connect DP or TB to iMac TB to use the iMac display for an extended or mirrored desktop.

Can anyone verify that?

The difference between Thunderbolt and mini-Display Port is a little like the difference between USB 2 & USB 1.1. They use the same connector so just plug it in like usual. No special adaptors required.

Yep. Thats why I wont be buying another iMac. My next system will be a lian li hackintosh (i7 2600k with Corsair H70 (Liquid Cooling) + 2 x HD6950 CF + 128 GB Crucial SSD Boot/Game Drive)...all on an mATX 1155 mobo ;)

Because it would cost them another $100 in parts without increasing sales. This way they make more money per sale and will make even more from those who want it. There would be no processor upgrade path if they put the i7 as default.

Yes, it's money but both ways (as in less or more expensive).

Just how many users do need an i7? (For that matter a quad core)

Be happy the options are there. The non power users get a break in price with the i5 and anybody who needs more buys a pro.

As always , if you don't like it don't buy it or wait.
