Why do people like you guys even post in these forums? Those of us in here actually care about iMacs and not your stupid PC's you built

Maybe they are just happy they can get superior hardware for the fraction of the cost?

I bought a new i5-2500k Sandy Bridge based PC 2 months ago and it mauls the new iMac's and cost £1300. I am also a Mac user, but like the guys above I can't help but feel more than a little happy with my PC purchase, especially when it looks terrific value for money when compared to the iMac.

Nor that their computers aren't made from Alumnium and Glass

They need to feel superior.

That really depends, albeit my old desktop isn't made of glass but it is made from aluminum, but the case and a decent power supply damaged my wallet at 250 eur.

The iMac is a really nice combo. The screen is wonderful and it won't take much space. Different markets. Anyway most people don't complain about their cheap lcd with crappy colors.

Well just pulled the trigger on my first iMac. Thank god for education discounts, over £300 saving in the end.

Very happy with the refresh, pretty much exactly what I'd expected. Only real downer was the lack of i7 as standard but, frankly, I don't need it for what I'm going to use it for so the 27" with 3.1Ghz i5 and 2Gb of graphics memory is more than good enough. Would have liked to see a HDMI input but oh well, does anyone know if there's any easy (and preferably cheap) adaptor out there to do HDMI > Thunderbolt / Mini Display port?

Oh, and bit of a bummer that it's showing the 11th of May as the delivery date too, ah well, gives me time to sort out a desk to put it on next weekend :D

There was one before! They had it on the apple store but now it's gone! Must've been really crap. It's out there somewhere!

Google is your only friend in this case!!

6770M with 512MB enough?

I'm thinking of getting the new 27" base model as my first imac, but I'm a bit lost when it comes to the graphics. Is 512 MB going to be enough for me? I'll mainly be editing and looking at photos and the odd movie. I don't do any gaming at all. In order to get the 1GB in graphics boost, it would cost about $400 to move up to the next model, so I only really want to do that if I need to.

Thanks for the advice!

Heh, just had a rush of blood to the head, cancelled the 'sensible' i5 iMac and bumped it up to the i7 with 2Gb of video ram instead. What the heck, this is going to last me at least three years (hopefully a bit more) and will be a gaming machine as well... might only be 10% extra processor speed but should notice that when trying to run games in a year or two.

Hackintosh time...

Love the refresh but 4-6 weeks for and SSD option? That sucks!

Anyone know if any local Apple Stores have the SSD options in stock? Anyone called around yet?

Yes, it will be fine.

Buy the SSD for far cheaper elsewhere! You would have to be a complete idiot to pay the Apple price for the SSD.

It shall be interested to see if Apple has fixed THE DISPLAY ISSUE called backlight bleeding! But I won't buy one now, I just wonder if they have fixed it..
You know, if you're watching a movie or something with a dark background, you will see a white light in the bottom right corner. I did.

How long until Amazon and MacMall get the latest (for no sales tax)? I prefer Amazon, but I might go with MacMall just to be able to customize a bit, at least to get the trackpad instead of the mouse since I already have a Magic Mouse.

If I'm not mistaking I believe I read on Intel's site that you could actually run two displays off of TB. I believe that one of them would be the built-in display. But, in theory, I believe you could run an additional 3 on the 27". Can anyone verify this?

I've been wondering the same. It would be great to have a 27" ACD flanking each side of a 27" iMac. I would hate to have to go MacPro just to have three displays. I like the compact form factor of iMac and don't want a tower on my floor or desk. Plus, I would never use the power of a MacPro but have been seriously considering it in order to have 3 displays. I know I could I have three displays with cheaply built PC's but that is not my cup of tea. No way will I ever go back to Windows PC's.

+1

LOL, those kinda' folks are ignorant^N
I burned $119 (still marked down from $149) on a P180 mini before it was placed on fire sale on NewEgg a few weeks later for $79. It is still a nice case.

Lian Li has brushed metal across its line up. You are going to pay for it though. The Cosmos and ATCS 840 from Cooler Master are glorious monsters. You can fit a Mac Pro inside of them.

Do not even invoke Silverstone!

Than go and brag in a damn PC forum and not in MacRumors!

IMHO Youll be fine dude (per your use cases)...unless you plan on some gaming(especially@native res)/robust image manipulation/editing...I dont think youll miss the extra frame buffer.

The issue I think most users have is not the actual chipset which Apple does pick well the complement a fast Intel CPU is how much RAM they put with it.

Really 512MB is pretty weak IMHO... 1GB should be standard across all models, while 2GB on 27" in a nice addition.
Given how protective Apple is with their profit margins, the question will then be would users rather have 512MB of GDDR5 or 1GB of DDR3 for VRAM? Given that GDDR5 has twice the bandwidth, 512MB is the better choice, even if it doesn't have the marketing flash of the 1GB number. This is in regards to the VRAM choice for the base HD6750M. I would agree the mid-range HD6770M should see 1GB of GDDR5.

Awesome, although I'll not be getting one, It does mean that I can upgrade my hackintosh, since now we have official support for sandy bridge processors..

But those buying an iMac will not be disappointed, the Quad Core i5 2k processors are amazingly fast..

Saw a few in the Apple store over the weekend but they were uni-directional and went the wrong way (i.e. Mini DisplayPort to HDMI, not t'other way round). Only one I can find on Google costs about £100 which is verging on the silly (and will definately have to wait until after payday with the extra costs of going to the i7 machine).

Wouldn't it be smart to wait for Lion in 2 months and get that for free...

... I'd pay the $129 or whatever to get Lion later, and drop the cash on the iMac now if I needed a machine right this very minute.

There's a couple of ways to look about such 'optimization' strategies. Personally, I'd rather buy the new hardware with the 'Old' OS just as the launch of the new one is immanent for two reasons. First, Apple often provides the new OS for free (or close) when within a ~30 day window. Second, there's often a risk of a new OS 'breaking' some important App, so going with the current OS incurs a better likelihood of having continuous operation.

... plus, one can also get the upgrade disk and then wait ~2 months until the first "x.1" bug fix ships before installing it.

I was one of those non-complainers for years - - then I got a pair of genuine Apple 24" displays at work, sitting right next to the PC "cheapo-s". IMO, the difference between a good-vs-cheap display is profound, once you have the opportunity to actually compare them side-by-side.

But I want the dual HD option... 256 GB + 2 TB. But from what I understand there isn't two HD bays in iMacs unless you order that dual option from the factory?

holy lord, apple went all out with this update. impressed! oh, man, macbook pro or new imac???

My 2005 imac is near death!
