holy crap!

Wow, those are some BTO options once you get to the high end 21.5".

This is a very impressive upgrade. 16GB and 2 Drives in a 21.5" ? that's wonderful. This bodes very well for future Mac releases across the board. I really hope all of the kinks of the last 2 years are worked out.

Will watch very carefully > I'm really not wanting to get another iMac but I hope these kinds of upgrades will become common place. This would be the machine I'd get for work since video/web design etc. is becoming part of my duties, if my job 1) supported Mac use and 2) funded the darn thing.

C'mon Apple let's see these kinds of options for the Mac Mini (not everything but more RAM, two drives, separate GPU and thunderbolt would be sweet).

Order placed. Upgrading from 24" 2.93 GHz Core 2.

Configuration:
3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
2TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

Hopefully should last me a few years like the old one. 6 weeks to wait though. :(

expensive, why not go MBP + nice LED Screen + SSD?

if you are selling 24", it will go for dirt

I am interested in the upgrade from 21.5" 2009 mode, but the resales value is low, i have no interest in the upgrade.

The OLD Apple may just be back

Finally, a quad core desktop class machine (in processors only I suppose) with ample I/O and a decent . . . . for Apple . . . . price.

Shocked that Apple would give us TWO TBolt ports on the 27" with quad core across the line.

The $1700 has my cheap side tingling but my professional side is telling me to wait for a Mac Pro update so I can at least consider a machine I can expand myself.

On the plus side, that 21.5" is not a bad machine for the price.

Having gotten used to a 24" panel, it's hard to step down to a 21.5. Obviously, it's nice to step up to the 27", if one has the extra disposable income. The 16GB RAM is a nice reality option, especially if the default were 8GB.

Everything is beautiful on the systems.

I hope I'm not the only one disappointed that you see an i7 in 3 out of the 4 MBPs, but i7 is only available for an extra $180 in the iMac.

The i5 2400 costs $150 @ MicroCenter, and that's the processor they use in the $2000 iMac!!! This is why people say Macs are overpriced (and they most certainly are). That having been said, I'll be buying an MBA or MBP 13 soon enough.

One thing to consider -- the iMac slots into the "midrange" position for the Apple desktop family (above Mini, below Pro), while the MBP is in the "high end" position for the laptop family.

Not going to go into the spec-chasing / validating. People have feelings one way or the other, and discussing / arguing online isn't likely to change either side's opinion :)

Once again, the iMac packs more processing power than the Mac Pro. (Even if you have a single hex-core.)

$200 difference between 21.5" and 27" iMac and the rest of the specs are the same, is it usually that price?

50% higher price in Sweden than US. Even with VAT of 25% added to the US price they are still 23% more expensive.

Swedish price from $1830.

Sorry not to add trollbait here but here's my main issues:

1) Though they are using current AMD/ATi 512MB is pretty weak... Though 2GB BTO is a good thing.

2) Was hoping for more than 16GB support...

3) <rant>The Aussie store is getting screwed again, we are 10% over parity and paying 20% more than the US store, even with import duty Aussies are paying too much IMHO </rant>

Oh well may wait till next year, for the next iMac bump and Lion...

Does this model support Jumbo Frames for a change? Why did Apple have to take that feature out, we could go for some cheap iMac Workstations for video editing!

Unless you can use one of the thunderbolt ports maybe?

Well yes, that's how it would work (and how it works on the current 27" DisplayPort based iMac). But just because you can physically connect a cable doesn't mean it will work as an external display. The connectors were the same on the old 27" and 21.5", but only the larger display functioned as an external display.

Ssd

I just ordered one... *happy* but why are the SSD-Drives not available at the moment? 4-6 weeks delivery... ;(

Mac Mini: Core2Duo

:(

maybe our day will come soon,

The way they've been able to keep the price low while using quad-cores in EVERY iMac has been by downgrading the GPUs. The Graphics Cards in EVERY model are now mobile. In the last line of iMacs they were full powered desktop GPUs.

So, you see, while there's an upside (the processors), it doesn't come without a down (the GPUs). At first glance I was really annoyed as the £999 one (which is what I got before the refresh) had an i5 quad core, then I saw the graphics memory and got even more annoyed, but THEN I noticed the large shiny M at the end of the GPU name. THAT's how they've been able to bring us them processors and still keep the price down. They've downgraded the GPUs. As my i3 processor practically acts like a quad core anyway and is virtually never pushed to it's limits I think I'm more than happy with what I have. The GPU may only have 256MB dedicated memory but at least it's not mobile.

Anyone else notice that apple.com's front page is all about the white iPhone 4 even though it was updated with new iMacs? The new iMacs get a little tile on the bottom left.

Pretty obvious who's the favorite ;)

And yet prices in the Australian Apple Store are still 25% higher than the USA Store. How rude, Apple.

Top end 27" iMac = US$1999, or in the Australian Store, AUD$2299 which at the current exchange rate is about US$2500. Why should we pay more, Apple? If anything, we're closer to China so should pay less on shipping!

Whilst it's slightly better than yesterdays prices, I'm still seriously not happy.
I'd buy one if we got the USA prices.
