Automator Rocks

When you're getting the iTunes error, if you're on a Mac, simply pull up automator and record three tasks in iTunes. Click on something in the side bar besides your phone, click on the phone, and when the error comes up, simply click ok. Then end the automator recording.

Copy that task in automator about 60 times, and then press play. Let it run, it gets you back in the queue. Worked awesome for me, and now my iPhone is no longer an iBrick!

How exactly should Apple have prepared for a massive one-time event? Install a billion servers so you don't have to lose a few minutes of you oh-so-precious life? Please.

The slowdown is for the same reason that freeways aren't 200 lanes wide, or why there are 500 exit doors at the movie theater. If everyone waits their turn, everyone gets served.

Didn't your mother teach you any manners?

hilarious.

Nice analogy, I like it. Makes me feel better.

Stuck

 I too am locked out after trying upgrade to v2.0. It just sits in iTunes saying "Accessing iTunes Store.....". Geeze, this is bad. I really need the phone ASAP. Does anyone have the link to download the firmware (old or new) and try it manually? I switched from Windows to Apple to avoid all this!

Ok, I decided to go for the final build of 2.0 and am getting this -9838 error. Anyone else having this issue? Is this due to high traffic if activations, did I brick my phone, or is it something from else??

<rant>please please PLEASE tell me youre kidding. wtf?? apple is pissing me off enough as it is. do we really need THIS asked over and over again?? READ A SINGLE POST BEFORE YOU POST! DAMN IT. </rant>

Thank God i updated to the leaked 2.0 software yesterday, because I had no problems and ever app I downloaded works fine except that pocket express it just stays on the same screen saying creating account.... oh well:D

West Coast Geekdom hordes are waking up now, so expect the iTunes store overload to get worst as coffee makers are being turned on around here...

NOPE, today's is 1,1 YESTERDAY's was 1,2

He said his RESTORE file was 1,2 from TODAY!

That makes no sense.

And that link above is 1,2 ALSO! lol

So I'm not TOUCHING my 2.0 update from yesterday until this mess is completely sorted out!
I don't understand how what you said is any different than what I said. Todays version has a smaller file and lower filename number. But it is newer than yesterdays. I am not sure how the OP got 1,2 from clicking restore in iTunes as everyone else seems to be getting 1,1.

By the way, is 7.08 GB of available space normal for a first gen 8GB iPhone when it has been wiped?
I think that is the case, as mine is reporting the same amount of space (oddly listed as 7.1 in the iPhone About screen)

AFTER AN HOUR! its activated and with 2.0 software running on it! :D
What is your modem firmware version (base band)?

Update Rush Hour

Here we go... After 90 minutes waiting for the damn itunes store to respond, I get an error message and my phone screen is stuck on the itunes logo/usb plug. Can't use the phone! Must Apple sell and release the firmware at the same day? Creating this enormous traffic to their servers between updaters and new activations. @ :apple:

Crobywan was right

This worked for me the first time, after multiple attempts to get my iphone to connect the iTMS after the re-sync.

I plugged in the phone, then clicked the iTMS link and selected something else (Maroon5) and when I clicked back on the iphone, it was ready to sync my new apps.

Thanks Corbywan!

For those getting -9398

This was posted in thet linked Apple discussion forum earlier and it worked for me.

In iTunes, alternately click between something in the iTunes store and your iPhone. Apparently this maintains an open session. As you keep that session open with activity you keep your place in the virtual line for re-activation of your phone after the upgrade. One user reported 10 minutes, took me less than five.

It could get ugly with server overloadedness as 8am Pacific time rolls around. Maybe I won't head out here first thing and see if I can get the new phone at my relatively not-busy AT&T store.

By the way, is 7.08 GB of available space normal for a first gen 8GB iPhone when it has been wiped?

I hate to be mean or pour salt in a wound, but this is like karma for all those people who ridiculed people like me for not waiting and downloading the beta yesterday!

My iPhone is working fine w/ YESTERDAYS 2.0 build 5A347 ! :D

Ah, yeah, I have this feeling I'm not gonna sweat our jump-the-gun upgrade until next week. It DOES deactivate the phone and have to reactivate, so if you can't connect to the iTunes Store, you won't get reactivating until you can.

Also, from prior work experience, in version control, the build number should increment for ANY recompile, not just if they fixed something, even if it was tiny. Somebody recompiles just for grins, version control will increment the build number. Plus the thing was out there all day and if Apple was worried about it they would have rather happily shut off public access to the server. They didn't care.

The 1,1 instead of 1,2 designation could have been used only to distinguish between the official iTunes firmware update and the 2.0 build 5A347 posted for internal use, developer, etc. The size difference of the file -- today's official iTunes updater version it's only like 7MB less -- could merely be files not included in the package that are not needed when using the iTunes updater to update the iPhone as opposed to the manual method in which you select the file. I know it seems like they would be exactly the same procedure, but a standalone, selectable version may require more in the file for the iTunes update to recognize it.

At any rate, works great is works great, so I intend to leave it alone. In fact, I can't see any reason to ever change it, if iTunes doesn't trigger me to update 1,2 5A347 to 1,1 5A347. In a couple months, there will be a bug-fix firmware 2.01 and, maybe a little later, a slightly more robust 2.10, and that WILL trigger and update in iTunes. I'll just do it then.

Unless this new error comes AFTER "Restoring iPhone music and videos"...

Then, i JUST made it! My phone activated, then the next time I hit refresh for these forums, I saw all the activation errors for the rest of you. Crazy.

I think I got the last activation before the Great AT&T / Apple Meltdown of 2008.

Re:

I'm now getting an Unknown Errir : -9838 when I try to connect the phone to the computer.

This is the exact error i received... I put my iPhone in DFU mode and now I don't get the error but I am stuck with the eternal trying to connect to the iTunes store screen... WTF???

Define your terms. Who's standards? What are the standards? How were they derived?

Get a grip. It's a telephone. It's not a pacemaker.

Well, when daddy gets you off the payroll and you are welcomed to big boy world you will possibly see how important a phone can be during the work week even when it is down for several hours.

New to the forum and macs. How do you put images on the board.
Still stock on the accessing itunes store for activation screen

so apple should purchase/rent more servers for every launch day so that everyone in the world can download 2.0 within a few minute window? wonder how that will effect costs for the consumer.

Are you saying Apple shouldn't prepare for a day like this?

When we have big events at work, we do in fact enlarge portions of that meeting or work to fit what we will expect

It really isn't that out of left field

Any noticeable difference between yesterdays build and today's (other than the file size) ??

Unfortunately, when I let it back up my iPhone yesterday, I first removed my 6GB of music to make the backup quicker... which means that now, since I just used that backup again, I've got to transfer all 6GB back, haha.

So I haven't gotten to use it yet. Will post if I find any noticeable differences that I can't tell for sure aren't placebo-ish.

[EDIT]
Hey there, Orleans Mac, I'm in your neighborhood, apparently. Haha. Well I'm from / in New Orleans, so to speak, I'm not sure about your neighborhood...

Ok so my sync just finished and apparently 2.0 has a new contacts button separate from the phone app (great idea!!!) and something freakish happened and while iTunes was syncing and installing the 28 apps I got yesterday, it was letting me use iPhone instead of sitting at the "sync in progress" screen. And apparently iPhone doesn't have to sit at the sync screen while it installs apps, I was using iPhone while new apps were popping up on my home screens

thank you, this worked for me - it seems that once you get a connection and you don't see the -9398 error - you will eventually get connected and your iPhone will finish the installation process.

From your mouth to God's ear.... This just happened for me as well and now everything is syncing according to plan and process. It's fun to watch when it finally let's you in.

Thanks to all on MacRumors who helped get us through this. It's a pleasure to learn from you!
