Same here. There are some performance tweaks, but beyond that (as a single screen user) I don't see many killer features really on a end-user level.

The changes are mainly fixes for stuff that should have been in OS X years ago. One big one being the fixed multi-display support (i.e not having a crappy texture on other displays when you go full screen into an app).

Thats a big deal for anyone who does serious work on a mac.

Other than that its really just the usual fluff that Apple Marketing love to do to make things look better than they are (prime examples being adding Maps and iBookStore and claiming they are OS features). Things like finder tabs are a nice addition, but again very late to the party.

OS X has seemingly been in 'maintenance mode' with regards to development for several years now. Sure, they throw 2 or 3 compelling features into the OS each time, but in most cases its stuff that you'd have seen people wanting for years and wondering why it was never there in the first place.

I really don't get adding Maps into the OS though. Theres no need to do that. If people want it, add it as a downloadable app for goodness sake. Don't bloat it onto the OS.

This beta fixes some of the random curious lags that were present up until DP 5 for me. Some of them:

1. When launching textedit after every boot, lagged for plenty of seconds until display the initial dialog window of new/open document.

2. When opening Finder after every boot, lagged for plenty of seconds until display the folders/files.

3. Lock screen seemed to not respond for a few seconds after returning from sleep, until allow the user to select an active account and login back to desktop.

It's definitely very close to final.

Indeed, frequent update cycles allow for faster, minor (but sometimes very important) changes, just like Linux does. It doesn't have to be a dramatic overhaul every single time. It generally keeps the OS more alive and aligned with new technologies.

Now, for the maps, I don't mind having it there (it even uses the wifi location detection which could be useful). I believe they are going to implement maps functionality to various apps in the future, so it will become a core component sooner or later.

I'm still on snow leopard, but I'm contemplating upgrading.
I honestly carnt do with out spaces tho, mission control was one of the worst decisions apple have ever made in the os realm. So I'm on the fence.
All the other features are so inviting tho, it's a hard call

If you upgrade I would clone Snow leopard just in case you are not happy. I have SL, Lion, ML and Mavericks DP6 and the most stable trouble free experience has been with snow leopard.

Is it just me or can anyone "select none" on Finder by pressing the esc key? I can't.

But DP6 broke airplay mirroring!

Apple need to release a hotfix for this pronto!

Bloat as in add 10MB's to your precious HD? What is this 1980? Why not remove calculator, text edit, dictionary, dvd player, etc from the OS as well since all those apps can easily be replaced by much better 3rd party alternatives? Maps is actually a much more useful app than all of those combined imho.

+1

Safari needs to be fixed, not improved. Proper printer drivers for all printers. Real mouse drivers with acceleration controls that work.

Safari is still the best working browser on OS X. Printer drivers haven't been an issue for me so far, and for mouse acceleration, you gotta pay up and buy Steermouse.

Roccat is better than Safari at least on Mountain Lion.

I know MS and Apple software don't always play that well together, but for some very strange reason, on Mavericks DP 6 the panel on the left hand side of Powerpoint displays all the slides in a presentation upside down. Bizarre!

The same happens in slide sorter mode. Very very strange.

I've noticed that you now need to be clicking down on the compass to rotate the maps. That's a pretty huge design flaw, and certainly makes it considerably less likely that I'll use it.

Edit: Actually, that just appears to have been a multi-touch bug isolated to Maps; rotation is working as usual following a restart of my MacBook. :)

I hope iWeb is finally updated in this beta.

Umm your a bit behind the times, iWeb was killed off thankfully 2 years ago, and you cannot get the programme anymore. June 2011: "In June 2011, rumours emerged that iWeb would not be developed further. Similar services like Jimdo were already offering special support for users planning to switch from iWeb. On June 30 2012 Apple finally pulled the plug on MobileMe. All iWeb websites hosted on MobileMe disappeared if not hosted elsewhere." AKA - when ICloud was released, iWeb was discontinued - no more updates ever. Last stable update was: 3.0.4 - released July 11, 2011.

Can anyone verify this? For certain? I am still convinced with these colors it has something to do with the Dallas Mavericks. The only hint on "surfing" from the promo graphic is the wave.

…and the fact that it was mentioned in the keynote as soon as the name was announced.

Will this have better early-on hardware compatibility, such as with printers? I only upgraded to 10.8 four months ago due to how long it took Xerox to get all their drivers out. I know Xerox is responsible for their drivers, but their tech reps said 10.8 security features made the drivers unusually challenging to update.

Typical response from company's like Xerox. They make the hardware, they make the drivers for their hardware, and use pathetic excuses to blame Apple. Xerox are responsible for updating their drivers, and unless specified they legally have to do this. Otherwise customer's may make a claim that Xerox refuse to update their software for their own hardware.

There is a way to fix that. I'm guessing you migrated the same user account to all three MacBooks? Google is your friend.

I'm having the same issue even after a clean install if ML. For the record I didn't use my time machine backup to configure the system either. Gonna do another clean install with mavericks (my windows habits aren't dead yet.)

iTunes is now at beta 48 (vs beta 44), fixes the sync bug. Still does not appear to properly shuffle your music. In my 55K+ library it will only shuffle songs with artists in the first few letters. In a playlist it will repeat a single song infinitely (repeat off) or the just within the same tiny alphabet cluster.

Hitting shuffle button within a playlist will start the same song with the same shuffle order every time.

I think you missed the sarcasm.

It just looks like shuffle is not working at all to be quite honest. I was suspecting it was just a seed that wasn't generated, but shuffle just plays everything in order regardless of what you are doing :(

My theory is that at this point both Apple and Microsoft don't really know what to do anymore. Both companies are constantly reinventing the wheel. Most of the time they just apply a fresh coat of paint and add some performance tweaks.

----------

I hardly use the Finder, I only use one screen, Safari is "snappier" every release and I've been able to do a cmd + Z to undo closing a tab for ages now (not new to OS X Mavericks). Granted the other stuff you mention are nice small additions, but not really that much to write home about.
For 20 bucks (speculation) it takes your existing computer and makes it better. Better battery life, better CPU performance, better RAM handling. If those aren't important to you, than stick with Mountain Lion.

Is there an Apple TV update as well? Or have you tried rebooting the Apple TV?

There's nothing wrong with my apple tv. It's up to date. And airparrot does work in mavericks dp6.

So I'll make do with airparrot for now (a software based version of airplay mirroring).

But generally speaking, apple's version of airplay mirroring is better because it is hardware based. It works straight from the processor (which explains why although mountain lion and mavericks will run on older computers, the airplay mirroring will only work on ones that have sandy bridge, ivy bridge or haswell processors).

Hardware based versions of airplay mirroring will (in theory) always be better than software based versions because they are far less taxing on the system.

So something has gone awry with DP6. Airplay mirroring isn't working at all in DP6 with apple's version.
