This is not true. Simply option-Click on the desktop you moved the window to, then drag the window back.

So that's more steps than previously. Why? Spaces was much more efficient, one step, you're there. Done. MC is adding more than necessary.
EDIT: Doesn't work. When I move a windows, say a Safari window, to a desktop, option-clicking on that windows doesn't move that Safari window, just the desktop. Nor does swiping. If I want to move that window I just moved (say, by accident) I have to leave MC, re-enter, then move it again.

Using this method, option clicking just takes me to that desktop. Why would I want to go to the desktop I moved the window to in order to move it again? In Spaces, if you moved it, just move it again with any other steps.

Sorry, but that's all pretty misleading... For starters, you showed the trackpad window, then compared it to the Expose window from SL...

THIS it the actual equivalent window in Lion...

Image
and contains most of the options that were present in SL. The one thing that's missing is an option to have the windows "ungrouped", which could, as the other poster said, be accomplished using a checkbox

And unless I've missed something, I can still drag from app to app using Mission Control, in much the same way that I could with Exposé...

1. "All Windows" is gone from Expose
2. Spaces was much easier in 10.5/6. Open it, see your grid (and it supported multiple displays), drag windows from one desktop to another without needing to add extra keys, assigning apps was easier than going to a desktop, making sure the app is in your dock, option clicking, selecting "Assign to this Desktop", then moving to another desktop, and repeating with other apps. This was done easily in Spaces System Preferences. One step, now it's many more.

Or just four finger swipe to it... much easier than Option-Clicking, imho... But of course either works

1. I know, and that's the thing that I said could be relatively added with a "Group windows in Mission Control" check box in SysPref.

2. I'll give you the assigning apps to desktops one. I don't agree with the dragging from one desktop to another. I can do it no problem with no extra keys. Simply pick up the window in MC, and drop it onto whichever Desktop/Space you want it in. Don't understand why people think they need to use all sorts of additional keys to do it... Unless I'm missing something (which is possible, it's late here)

MC supports multiple displays doesn't it? Perhaps not in full-screen mode but that is no different than from SL since there was no full-screen in SL. So unless I'm missing something, I fail to see your point.

The point is if you dragged it to the wrong desktop, you cannot select that app window again to drag it to the right desktop, you have to go to that desktop, drag it again, or re-enter MC. In Spaces, you just open Spaces, see the grid, and move windows in and out of desktops, see two displays for each desktop if you have them which is much easier than MC, etc.

1. This is the old Spaces grid. Once it is open, you can do everything there, no other clicks, swipes, etc. needed. Drag, move, assign, etc.

2. This is Spaces with two displays. Much easier to drag apps/windows around, MC has tiny little desktops above each desktop background on each display. Seems convoluted:

Screen-Shot-2011-07-18-at-10.08.36-PM.png

Imagine seeing the above for EACH display. It's a mess. This is what I see for each of my displays on my Mac Pro (and sorry for the large pic, I couldn't find a smaller example quickly).

So again, how does M.C. make multi-tasking easier given the above?

Question: Mods, how did you do that with the image? Make it smaller, and clickable? Thanks!

Ok, so I drop a window onto a desktop in MC... realise it's in the wrong one. I can either opt-click on the desktop it's now in, or 4-finger swipe to it, pick the window up again and drop it where i want it.

Yes, I suppose in that particular situation there's a LITTLE more effort involved... but it's hardly 1) something that happens every 5mins or 2) more than about 5 seconds "work"

Personally, I just don't understand the strength of the dislike people seem to have for MC... It makes some things a little faster and some a LITTLE slower, but most stay pretty much the same.

I used expose and spaces a lot in SL, and I use MC a lot in Lion. Can't say that Lion has made my life any more inconvenient.

i wasn't disputing these points. I questioned the point regarding the support of additional displays. How those displays are managed is another question altogether. Nice red-herring though.

Except, I cannot do this on my Mac Pro or MacBook Pro running Lion. How are you doing this? Option clicking just moves the desktop order or takes me to that desktop, it does allow me to select the app window in that desktop while in MC.

It's not a red herring! LOL It's a fact. I just PROVED it. Move on, you have your mind made up. All many of us are asking for are OPTIONS. That is all. This is not a personal issue, and I really doubt options are gonna break OS X.

Ok, for you, having seen that, I guess Spaces is less efficient.

But as I'm sure you will agree, the fact that you have SEVENTEEN "Spaces" or desktops open in that bottom picture (split over however many monitors) puts you MASSIVELY in the minority... I'd imagine less than 1 in several thousand users has that many desktops open.

Perhaps some work should be done for people who do have that many open, but as I'm sure you can appreciate, it's hardly likely to be high on the priority list

Step by step.

1. Go into MC on the desktop you have the window-to-be-moved
2. Pick that window up.
3. Drop it in desired desktop.
4. Realise it's in the wrong one. Four finger swipe to desired desktop
5. Pick up previously dropped window, and drop it where you do actually want it.

If that doesn't work, I really don't know why, because I've just done it with windows from several different apps, to test...

Ok, that's four more steps than one for old Spaces. No need for all that. Why should I have to go to that desktop to retrieve the window I just moved, when I can simply click and drag it again without leaving Spaces?

As for desktops, I know people who have 16 in use, and that is sometimes not enough. I see this every day, side by side:

This is a multi-tasking mess. Lion was built for one display systems, so it seems, for notebooks and iMacs. Apple needs to focus on those who use more than one display, which is not a small segment as some suggest. Final Cut Pro alone uses up both of my 24" displays.

This is how it used to be:

230382317_fdea048db3_z.jpg

Everything on one display, moving windows around didn't require more key/trackpad combinations, just dragging around from one to the other, I can see what's open where (this is a small image, normally - of course - the windows are larger and easier to see), no small desktop and graphic eye candy. Simple. Easy. Done. :)

I get MC, it's GREAT for one display, but lacks a lot for those who need more options. That's all. I guess I'm a little peeved that Apple is so focused on consumer options, and have taken out great workflows for those who use more. Sorry if I seem , I'm not, I'm just :( lol

Evidently not, since I received 6 down-votes. Just trying to help macrumors out...You know, if I found a coding issue or something, then I would be popular. Forever alone English major...:(

You proved a point that was beside my point.

My mind is not made up. Some options I'd like to see added, others don't bother me so much. Isn't there a third party app that adds what you say is missing? If so, I'm not sure I see what the fuss is about. All I am doing is asking for more clarity as to the problem and pointing out the factual errors. This isn't personal. I just want to make sure I grasp the real issue here, if there be one.

Perhaps it's more steps, but since each one takes about a second (and unless you're really clumsy, dropping windows in the wrong place isn't a vastly regular occurrence) it's not exactly a big deal...

And it's not 4 more steps at all. If you divide up the old process in the same way I have there, it's ONE extra step (the swiping to the other desktop). All the other stuff would have been required anyway

1.Go into spaces
2. Pick window up
3. Drop window
4. Pick window back up and drop where desired.

See?

Also, I can't help but notice you've got 15 desktops open there, and yet you're only using 2 (despite the fact that you have quite a few apps open, so it looks like the computer has been running for a while). Sort of makes me wonder whether all those desktops were opened up solely to prove a point.

That's not my desktop but an image I used quickly. Sorry. I have ~10 desktops, which isn't a lot as some suggest. I edited my post to make it clearer (sorry!). Check it again to see what I'm trying to demonstrate. Honestly, I don't mind MC, I just don't like the options being stripped away that were once perfect for some of us. :(

You proved a point that was beside my point.

how so? What was your point then?

Yes, ReSpaceApp, and the developer is doing a great job thus far. However, it still lacks much of what Spaces offered, and there is still the issue with "All Windows" Exposé that some would like back.

Source? I hope Apple keeps up the good work. I like the iOSification. Seems well executed so far with little to no sacrifices.

I'll have my clients who have a contention with this write you. I don't need a source to validate my point. :)

During the time you guys have been arguing about expose/spaces I have opened 10 different documents in different desktops. Changed the content of said documents and saved them.

I then switched the apps around to different desktops and closed them.

While you guys were nitpicking .

Think about that.

;)

It's not your desktop but according to the filename it's a screenshot taken today, about the time you originally posted it? ;-)

How many monitors are you using btw?

Even 10 desktops (as opposed to the 15/16 originally shown) seems to me to be surpassing the number which would make multi-desktopping a help, and moving into the territory where it'd just be a hindrance, trying to keep track of where everything is (irrespective of using MC or Spaces/Expose)

But maybe I just haven't got the Rainman like tendencies to be able to keep track of all that :p

64 bit?

Good afternoon

Does anyone know if this build boots into 32 bit?
Or is it also 64 bit only?
Damn soundcard is 32 bit only

Thanks for calling me Rainman, much appreciated.

It is not my desktop, it's from here:

bout half way down.

Honestly, my head hurts and this is gotten silly. We have our opinions, I respect yours and have conceded many times that M.C. works for many. Yet you resorted to calling me mentally disabled for having my own. Taking Peace's suggestion, let's move on.

Have a good night sir :)

Fair enough, my apologies on the screenshot.

I didn't call you mentally disabled, in any way shape or form, nor would I.

It was a jokey comment, simply saying that *I* don't have a good enough memory to be able to keep track of 10-15 different desktops, and what apps I have squirrelled away on each of them.

So I'd really appreciate it if you wouldn't falsely accuse me of that sort of abuse. Cheers.

As for MC, I think it works fine for the vast majority of users. I do think it could be maybe opened up in terms of a few more options... but people who use 10+ desktops are BOUND to be low on the priority list, because they are without a doubt in the tiny minority of users.

I think he made his point well without using personal slurs. Unnecessary.

Sorry, but at no point was a personal slur made. For one thing, it wasn't a slur at all, and for another, the comment was directed at myself and the fact that *i* don't possess a memory of sufficient standard, not at anyone else.
