Simple question. What is the difference between the 1/27/15 10.10.2 [which I downloaded] and the 1/28/15 version that is almost twice as large??

I asked Apple support and they didn't know.

I suspect you downloaded the delta which is smaller than a combo.

The Jan 28 one is an updated combo which fixed the problem with the first combo not updating 10.10.1.

App store shows a Remote desktop and 10.2.2 on the 27th. It also says there are no updates.

I am not sure what I am missing, specifically any necessary security fixes or the like?

New to Mac here.
Why is it taking so long to download?
I have a Verizon FIOS 75/down-75/up connection. It says it's a 443MB file.
2hours 20 min to go???
I have a new Retina iMac 27. Is this normal?

If you have already installed 10.10.2 with the delta and the remote desktop update, you basically are not missing anything (unless you have a lexmark printer - a whole heap of new lexmark printer drivers have since been updated). EDIT: There is also a new iTunes 12.1 today too: https://www.macrumors.com/2015/01/29/apple-release-itunes-12-notification-widget/

However, there was also a new xprotect and this never "shows up" in the mac app store. It is supposed to install automatically. Many times however it doesn't and people may in this case like to manually install it.

If you want to do this you can get it at http://swcdn.apple.com/content/down...rj4vz9f75gyeyllgr/XProtectPlistConfigData.pkg

You can check if it has been updated by going to Finder->Go->Go To Folder. Copy this into the box:

/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/

You may have to sort by name to make the list alphabetical. Scroll to the bottom to a file called "XProtect.plist". The date it was last changed will be the last time it was modified.

If it is dated Dec 15, 2014 or before, you have the old one and it has not been updated. You may use the link above to update it. The new one is dated January 28, 2015. (or January 27 depending on your time zone).

Are you using a DSN server other than the one provided by your ISP?

Apple's shiny new CDN doesn't always seem to play nice with some of the third party DNS options when it comes to downloads.

Screen Tearing

Getting some janky screen tearing while using the screen zoom accessibility feature.

Otherwise it seems to be solid.

Nope!
Just a straight Ethernet connection even.

Do we know what changes 10.10.2 brings to the recovery partition?
Has not been communicated by Apple. However it's a peace of mind thing. ;)
[...] There is another way without having to actually install the system. But it does require the full installer to be downloaded. It is particularly useful if you have already updated the system via a delta or combo and the recovery partition is not yet updated.

To make the recovery partition: [...]

Awesome, thanks for this. Tried it on another installation updated via combo update. Works like a charm and took only 2-3min to complete.

Thanks Ty
Mine says Jan 27, 2015 was the change date

That could be just a time zone discrepancy. I'm in Australia which is usually 1 day ahead.

Apple has reset the ratings on the UK Apple store… Total of 6 ratings submitted.

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/os-x-yosemite/id915041082?mt=12 shows:
  • 4,878 ratings for all versions of Yosemite
  • 31 ratings for 10.10.2.
… At the EfiLoginUI, which appears after the startup chime, do nothing. Simply wait for a minute or two.

Has Apple made all texts more legible? …

I guess not. https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=20654171#post20654171 includes a shot of the problem before 10.10.2 was released.

…"Memory Clean" app from the App Store. Works like a charm to keep ... your memory clean. …

It's not dirty to use memory. Elsewhere (not in this topic) you'll find many criticisms of products such as Memory Clean.

I think for Apple should design an ingenious way to "force" people to CLEAN install …

Force erasure of all data? Never.

After updating I can't turn off bluetooth on my 13' MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) It's pretty annoying.

Thanks for the heads-up. I had to run the 'softwareupdate --background-critical' command line tool a few times to get it to download and install the XProtect update as it still hadn't automatically installed. Yosemite still seems buggy with regard to timely installation of such 'system data files and security updates'.

Note that you can easily see it's been installed by looking in System Information - Installations.

Windows 10 is offering much more than the items you listed. I have been running it since September and I think Microsoft has done a wonderful job. I know it's frowned upon here, but I like OS X, Linux, and Windows. They are all fine operating systems.

Windows 10 is the successor to Windows 7 that people have been waiting for. There are many features to like and I think Microsoft will have a huge hit on their hands. I'm actually considering getting a Windows 10 notebook in the fall with the release of Skylake CPUs.

Skip the kool-aid, grab a copy of the Windows 10 preview and play around with it in a VM. Life is too short to only see it through only one perspective.

What is it with people and the cool aid. I used windows for 7 years to know what I'm getting myself into. Even windows 7, which is a great OS, is still Windows. Windows 8 sucked so bad they skipped 9 and are trying to do damage control with Windows 10. It's free so that is pretty cool and it got Cortana. Tell me some other awesome windows 10 features I'm missing out on. I'm genuinely interested since the keynotes only showed absolute basic stuff, like reading list in Spartan that syncs with phones. Mind blowing.

My iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) still displays flashing green and purple pattens if I have transparency turned on. Keeping transparency off fixes it, but... I think that's lame for the most current OS.

I find it easier to just open System Information and browse to Software->Installations

I have the same machine with zero issues. Might be worth having your graphics checked at an Apple store?
