Apple Releases OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 With Security Fixes, iCloud Drive Browsing Options in Time Machine

So I usually download the updates manually
I get the Combo update so that I can use it on any of the machines, and to keep around if I do a clean install on a machine and want to update it quicker. In the past I've always been able to use Combo updates on any of the machines, even on machines only 1 release behind. Is that no longer possible in Yosemite?

Edit: The Delta (non combo) update ran fine...

I believe with Yosemite, when you try to do an erase and install (with a USB stick, with 10.10) it forces the machine to go to the most recent version of Yosemite unfortunately. If you watch the steps of installation, the first thing it does is 'download additional components' before installing anything. Tried this the other day when we had to wipe a co-workers laptop, and used our OS X 10.10 USB stick. It required an internet connection for us to install OS X. I am not sure if this is what you were referring to, but I found this very odd.

****ing Apple, how hard can it be

They're too busy stockpiling cash and touting their profits on media outlets to actually have time to make their products "just work".

It is frustrating when issues continue, patch after patch after patch.

My iPhone still, among other things, won't accept input when messaging in landscape mode. Really Apple?

So you're using Adobe Photoshop and you're blaming Apple for its memory leaks? OK

Try the free "Memory Clean" app from the App Store. Works like a charm to keep ... your memory clean. :)

No, as I said, the slowdown continues once I've quit Photoshop. If you quit an application, all of its memory should be released. That is handled by the OS, not the app. So the problem is within the OS, regardless of how much Photoshop sucks.

I'll have a look at the app though!

----------

So, that's your definition of something that Apple needs to be working on an update for? First, you are using your iMac in a way that 99%+ of people never will. Second, all it takes to fix your issue is to restart after 8 hours of work. The horror... the horror...

It's quite an inconvenience when you have 9 huge documents open and it starts to slow down. You REALLY don't want to restart in the middle of that. So you have 3 more hours of work left to do and it will take you 5 hours because it's so slow. Or you could restart, and then it will take you 4 hours because it takes ages to reopen the right documents and to get back to whatever you were doing before.

Actually, the "Pro" part of "MacBook Pro" relates to how it's supposed to deal with heavy use due to professional work (work being done to make money, so, heavy, repetitive and urgent), so I doubt 99% of its users would not push it to its limits.

Might I add, we're on MacRumors, where people discuss minor details of products that are designed to solve problems that you didn't even have 1 year ago. Such as how rounded the back of the next iPhone will be. I think there are plenty of other "horrors" being discussed that don't even impact the user's life as much.

...
It required an internet connection for us to install OS X.

I just reinstalled my Mac Mini 2012 with OS X 10.10.2 using a self-made USB stick.
I always unplug the ethernet cable and erase the NVRAM before booting from the USB stick.
So there's no Internet connection during the setup process. It didn't complain about that.

Erase the USB stick you want to use for the installation with the Disk Utility using JHFS+ and name it "Untitled".
Important: Make sure you do not have another device mounted with this name or you might accidentally erase it!
If you have downloaded the Yosemite installer, apply the following commands in the Terminal:

Code:
sudo asr restore -source /Volumes/OS\ X\ Install\ ESD/BaseSystem.dmg -target /Volumes/Untitled -erase -format HFS+
sudo rm /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/System/Installation/Packages
sudo cp -a /Volumes/OS\ X\ Install\ ESD/Packages /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System/System/Installation/Packages
sudo cp -a /Volumes/OS\ X\ Install\ ESD/BaseSystem.chunklist /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System
sudo cp -a /Volumes/OS\ X\ Install\ ESD/BaseSystem.dmg /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System

This method has the advantage that it boots faster (no verify) and doesn't first copy all the source files to the target drive. Thus the installation is a lot faster too. But you won't have the option to launch Safari directly from the Setup-Utility. But you can of course do so using the included Terminal.

iTunes 12.1 inside 10.10.2 full installer

A little surprise on the full installer of 10.10.2... :D:D

Halle-freakin-lujah!

All the sluggishness is gone! Safari no longer dawdles a few steps behind me. Multiple tabs no longer drag the system to crawl. Network access seems significantly less sucky. My Mac no longer takes half a Peter Jackson film to boot.

I feel like I finally have my Mac back.

Note to my future self: No more early adopting on the OS X upgrades. Be patient next time.

OS X dying, Haha must be joke of the week.
Windows 10 will give users a starmenu, multiple desktops and metro apps that are not full screen, oh and Spartan. Cutting edge stuff from Microsoft.

Windows 10 is offering much more than the items you listed. I have been running it since September and I think Microsoft has done a wonderful job. I know it's frowned upon here, but I like OS X, Linux, and Windows. They are all fine operating systems.

Windows 10 is the successor to Windows 7 that people have been waiting for. There are many features to like and I think Microsoft will have a huge hit on their hands. I'm actually considering getting a Windows 10 notebook in the fall with the release of Skylake CPUs.

Skip the kool-aid, grab a copy of the Windows 10 preview and play around with it in a VM. Life is too short to only see it through only one perspective.

Yes it is.

It runs Java bytecode in a contained environment, so it's a Java Virtual Machine.

Just the way it runs Java bytecode has changed.

ART (Android RunTime) generates native code from the byte code. That native code is run. Call it a java byte code compiler, if you must, but this ain't a JVM,.

I am updating from Mavericks. My screen is in the same state now for about an hour: Apple logo and progress bar halfway (see image). How long should an install take?

Can I safely reboot if nothing happens?

As long as windows still doesn't fix certain annoying "features" I will never like it.

For instance, Windows Update is a joke, they never seem to get it right, update over update over update if you reinstall windows, progress bar doesn't make any sense.
Installing Apps is a lot less refined than OS X.
Trackpad/mouse clicks still don't always register.
Registry joke...
Viruses
importing from old windows does not copy all settings
If windows has crapped out on you you can't use export to import into the new install.
And so on and......
Whenever family asks me to fix their windows PC's I get annoyed by it fast.

Yes reboot.

Glitch?

Am I the only one getting this after 10.10.2 update?

Look at the "tag" area of the context menu. Really looks weird!

I'm also having occasional WiFi disconnections. But I had the same problem recently in Mavericks. I don't know when these problems started, sometime in the recent months.
