Update did this to my 2011 iMac. Can't seem to start in recovery mode either...

Damn.. I have a 2011 iMac as well. So glad I saw your post before I installed update.

Hope you get your problem sorted!

Does Photos have a black background option? All those images against a white background is hard on the eyes, and looks pretty... cheap.

Two important decisions came easy to today thanks to MacRumors...

1. Wait on next gen Watch...
2. Don't touch this upgrade yet!

I've had two kernel panics on my 2012 Mac Mini since performing this update this afternoon. Never had a kernel panic on this machine before. I did all the developer betas and never had a kernel panic either. Has anyone else had kernel panics from this build? Thanks

Some people don't like the new Photo app and are staying with iPhoto. I have not tried the new Photo app yet.

Its a toy app for iPhone snapper. Tim Cook must have smoked some really bad stuff to ditch the iPhone/Aperture combo. Won't bet a dollar that Final Cut will see 2016.

The new bar for successsful Apple apps seems to be, they can be operated by a 3 years old.

Question to anyone who has downloaded Yosemite 10.10.3 and who had iPhoto on Yosemite 10.10.2

Does iPhoto get removed and replaced by Photos or are both programs side by side on your Mac after the upgrade?

They're side by side.

And if you import an iPhoto library into Photos, it's a copy; the original library is untouched. It does note that changes made to the new Photos library won't be reflected back to the original iPhoto library. (And iPhoto can't read the Photos library data, either.

So, safe to play with.

Post install,

iPhoto library > 28.04 GB, 8679 files
Photos library shows > 26.62 GB, 8534 files

what gives?

Photos is building hard links to iPhoto and Aperture libraries. iPhoto won't show you how much an unstable mess that library is. In referenced mode, Aperture has tools that do show the mess. These libraries constantly loose track of images. Rebuilding the Aperture library trades one set of missing originals for another.

Your Photos app is looking for images stored in iPhoto that iPhoto can't find. And now you can wonder if the new library is any better.

Photos & iPhoto

I just added a new album to iPhoto and does not automatically sync with Photos. After the initial import it appears that you have to add pictures to both Photos and iPhoto separately...is that correct?...any work around?

Not sure to wait in case this borks my photo library.

It won't. An existing iPhoto library isn't modified, a new library is created. And after that, neither has any connection to the other.

It looks scary at first, as the Aperture library's name is changed to (for example) "Aperture Library.migratedaplibrary". There will also be a new library named "Photos Library.photoslibrary", which is what Photos actually uses. If you open "Aperture Library.migratedaplibrary" from the Finder, a warning dialog pops up to remind you that the library has been migrated to Photos, and any changes to either library won't be reflected in the other. Go ahead and open it in Aperture; it will be unchanged from before the migration.

Aaa-a-ah, EMOJI!!! Your little yellow faces have been chasing me in my dreams already!

But I guess, that issue got even worse now, because I usually dream in color...

What is the purpose of having the new Photo's and iPhoto side by side; wasn't Photos supposed to replace iPhoto?

Sorry if this is a silly question, as I am a new MBP user.

It gives you a chance to hold off switching if for some reason Photos just doesn't come close to replacing iPhoto for you.

Imagine the screams of outrage if it just replaced everything with no choice on your part.

I have 124 Go of photos in my Aperture library.
I have 13 Go left on my computer.
OSX can't convert my library, I need "at least" 16 additional Go...

Any work around? Gone have a hard time finding the room to migrate...

And will Aperture still run under 10.10.3? Or is "Photos for OS X" all there is now?

Aperture runs just as it did in 10.10.2. You can import an Aperture library into Photos and compare features side by side, if you want.

Not that that's an extremely equal set yet.

"Maturation" of Mac OS X on an annual update cycle

It's pretty obvious that ever since Mac OS X is put on an annual update cycle it takes approximately four to five revisions for the operating system to be somewhat stable (or usable according to many). I still remember back when Mavericks was released in late 2013 I lost a chunk of my data due to crashes after upgrading to it but was able to save it thanks to Time Machine. iTunes and Safari also felt unstable and I was constantly seeing error messages in Console.

Now everything is very smooth on Mavericks - Safari error messages are gone, iTunes Wifi sync works as it's supposed to and all the softwares that I frequently use have all caught up with Mavericks as well. It's sad to see that we Mac users now have to suffer the same privation every 12 months. It's true that people can hold off from updating but the onus should not be on the users to have more self control but rather on Apple to put out quality products.

It's a shame because I first switched to Apple in 1998 to flee the horror that was Windows 98 and bought the first bondi blue iMac. Now oh boy the new Yosemite really brought back those memories.

itunes lost radio, match and store

Since 10.10.3 I don't have anymore Match, Store and Radio. Those disappeared also from the menu bar. On a second Mac in my office Match, Store and Radio are still there.

Somebody any ideas, please?

From what I read online once I open photos for the first time it will automatically start to convert and import my iPhoto library. Can I choose not to do this? As I want to start fresh and manually import all of my photos a folder at a time.

It asked me if I wanted to import the iPhoto library (I said no, and we went on from there).

Doubt it had anything to do with the fact that I had a hammer close to hand at the time.

Great, I've tired everything I know, and still can't get my MacBook air to boot after this update. It just keeps rebooting over and over. Looks like I'm going to have to reformat and install a fresh copy of OSX. Thanks Apple.
Just go to your mirror backup and reload that and start over. I'm sure you have a backup...right?

I just added a new album to iPhoto and does not automatically sync with Photos. After the initial import it appears that you have to add pictures to both Photos and iPhoto separately...is that correct?...any work around?

That is correct.

No workaround; it's very intentional.

Nice

Had an issue where my 2012 Rmbpro was able to find 10.10.3 via update and my iMac 5k wouldn't. I had to restart my iMac and that solved that problem. Not a big deal, both installed in about 20-30 minutes. I haven't really used iPhoto so and have not much use for the new photo app. Emoji's on a laptop aren't useful for myself. I do like Apple releasing iOS and OS X updates on the same day, I get in update mode and began update mine and my households iPhones and my macs.

So hidden photos seem to not be hidden anymore in the new photos app ....

any one know a work around ?
