I've been placing custom system sounds to /Library/Sounds instead and they've always showed up in System Preferences. Mine are in AIFF format.

That's the oddest thing for me then, as it's never shown before in all my years developing on OS X. :)

There's one mp4 that won't list, otherwise wav and aif files are listing perfectly.

I think those HUDs was supposed to be translucent to match up with iOS 7/8's Volume and brightness HUDs but something went wrong it looks like.

Will be a pain to have those HUDs for 2 weeks until the next DP..

I think they're fine, but have to ask: how often do you use them?

FWIW, I set my screen brightness *once* (when I got my machine) and it never changes. I set my volume *once* and control volume either via my external DAC or via player internal slider.

The odds against me even seeing those HUDs during a two-week window are slim to none LOL

Never thought I'd say this, as I don't like iOSification of Mac OS X, but I think the current System Preferences layout is just chunky and old.

A better solution, IMHO, would be to imitate the iPad Settings UI in the OS X System Preferences UI. My vision would be a wide window with two columns - pane selections on the left, settings pane on the right. The same options we see now would still exist in the setting pane - but the UI would be overall much more consistent, and the window would stay the same size. The current resizing of the System Preferences window is annoying and distracting to me.

To set the UI apart from the iPad Settings UI, and to be sure not to dumb down or remove any settings, the setting pane should have tabs if needed (for example, Network Settings would have the main settings tab, then advanced tabs).

Right now, as it stands, the current System Preferences UI is just too inconsistent and looks outdated, IMO.

agree that vol and brightness hud is so crap its blinking nonstop when you try to change anything also not getting any noise when changing vol ...are you guys hearing it??

Try holding shift while pressing up and down volume buttons. I like that this is the default behaviour now. I had made a terminal change to it in previous OS releases, now it's without sound standard.

USB Install Method with DP5

Disclaimer: I have yet to install DP5 using the key I created earlier but I'm readying my Mac for a clean install using this Developer Preview release.

This is new for Yosemite Developer Previews, right?

That you can create an USB using this Terminal command previously used on the Public Beta 1:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite\ Developer\ Preview.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite\ Developer\ Preview.app --nointeraction

You must have a desktop (or at least use it like a desktop).

I'm on a laptop, and I'm constantly jumping back and forth between super-bright (when I'm plugged in, in daylight, etc) and all the way down (trying to conserve battery, or simply in a dark room). Same story for volume. I see those popups 5-10 times a day at least.

I see them both daily. I manually control the brightness on my laptop depending on the time of day (the auto setting via ambient light sensor is not accurate enough), and on the desktop its a battle between me and my wife for brightness dominance. I like it at minimum, and she likes it half way.

The volume I see a lot because I use a powermate to control the system level volume, which is what I use everywhere.

Fair enough - I have a laptop (MacBook Pro), but I don't bother with all the battery saving optimizations, etc. - I need the screen to be the same brightness whether I'm on mains or battery, etc.

Thanks for the answer - I honestly couldn't picture why someone would care

Wifi is not an internet connection, dial up,2-3-4g and broadband are amongst others.:p
Wifi IS an internet connection. Google "WISP" and take a look at the AirMax product range from Ubiquiti (and no they aren't the only manufacturer with these kind of devices).

However, if you want to be correct than none of the mentioned technologies are internet connections. They all are network or data connections. They are all capable of providing you with internet access.

Btw, it's fine Apple is making the volume/brightness HUDs look like the ones in iOS but at least do it properly; they're ugly as they are now :(

im with the same problem here...

try out terminal but nothing...
and I hate dark theme.

Works fine from Settings --> General here, both switching to and from Light and Dark themes.

Why does the light bulb in the Energy Saver icon look like it's wearing a girdle?

Image

What type of light bulb is that supposed to be, anyway? What kind of light bulb glows yellow anymore? Come on, Apple! :/

You amuse me. Well that seems to be a LED lightbulb based on the construction, and the yellow glow depends on how "warm" light you want. And you could also just put a coating on if you insist that LED light doesn't glow yellow...I think it's a non-issue. I might be wrong though...

It's like those yellow bug lights that HOPE to repel bugs! It is weird lookin'. Is it an LED bulb? They still have that Mercury-infested CFL bulb in Mavericks and ML. Greenpeace must have gotten after them.

Woo-hoo! This was my biggest (non-functional) gripe with Yosemite!

Obfuscated URLs! What were they thinking???

Maybe the will add that to iOS8. (It's not in b5.) That is one annoying "feature" when you are working on a website and checking it with an iPad.

Guys, anybody mentioned the increase of CPU/HDD temperature after DP5 update ? Mine jumped to 52-54 degrees on idle (while before it was 30-32)
