The remote issue is just pathetic way to make extra $$ by Apple.
BUT i'll wait 2-3 weeks and then get the new MBP. I really hoped for a redesign but well... you can't have it all I guess ;)

I'm sorry this is a complete noob question, but I wanted to know would the same third party ram that worked in the old MBP work in this one? I suspect it will but wanted to make sure.

I'll wait for higher res screens.

Completely Agreed! Apple's always been a little funny about their displays. I have heard through the ethernet cable that they choose higher quality, tighter tolerance* displays on their cinemas as well as their laptops. If this is true, then that may suggest that a high res 15" screen at high quality is just not economical or very available.

*Note: tighter tolerance refers to manufacturing tolerances, which often are hard to discern from the consumer's viewing angle.

is there any chance that the retail stores will get anything better than the basic model? I'd like a maxed-out 17 inch with 7200 drive & LED screen. What are the odds a retail store will get something with those specs??

im SOO GLAD i waited 2 extra weeks...
i have a feeling the macbook pro's entirely aluminium...look at the track pad closeup shots on apple website...the surface (which used to be plastic) has a different texture.

7 pages already of comments already! And I bet half are "Wheres my case redesign? Wheres my blu-ray? Where's my magnetic latch?"

The complaints continue until Apple slowly transforms the MBP into an iPhone sized super computer.

For those of you who are satisfied with the update, good attitude. For those of you who aren't, you can't have everything. Take what you can get and be happy.

Now in June when they update again, people will be saying "I've been waiting 9 months to get my MBP!!" To which the reply should be, "If you needed it that bad, for that long, YOU SHOULD HAVE GOT IT AT THE END OF FEBRUARY!"

Congratulations to those getting a new MBP.

P.S. No multi-touch on the Macbook? Guess I don't have to exchange the one I bought 13 days ago! Woot woot!

Don't be so dramatic. The vast majority of people never use the remote on a laptop anyway. The U.S. is heading for a recession and they want to maxmize profits as much as possible. Business 101. Sucks, yes indeed, but, by your same logic you're spending $3000 on a laptop, can't you afford an extra $20 for a remote?

This has probably been said a thousand times before but I think this is obvious signs of Apple updating their whole way of dealing with remotes. They don't ship free with most products now and other little signs like they no longer stick to the iMac. The next revision of the iMac would be perfect timing to phase it out and perhaps get rid of the Mighty Mouse too IMHO.

They will come out with something everybody and their brother wants as an accessory and charge accordingly for it is my guess.

I'm sorry this is a complete noob question, but I wanted to know would the same third party ram that worked in the old MBP work in this one? I suspect it will but wanted to make sure.

Yes, it will.

I'm jsut a bit confused about the lower cache from 4mb to 3mb - when they increase from 2,2 to 2,4 in the low en MBP.

Wouldn't it equal = no upgrade? aka - downgrade?
Nope, it is still an upgrade. Honestly the cache is only there to hide the latency hit from going to main ram. Cache will decrease (most likely) once Nehalem is released as it has an integrated memory controller. Besides, lower amounts of cache, can sometimes lead to higher clocked CPU's as the cache usually takes up more space than the actual CPU logic.

Why would it? No OLED screen - same batteries but with a faster processor - they're doing well if it uses the same amount of energy, let alone gets more life out of the same battery...

Anybody notice they changed the wording. Now it is wireless productivity, so maybe the battery life is much better.

UK Apple Store incorrect info

Just spoke to Apple UK, and they are having issues with updating the UK website, the tech guy told me that the video card is indeed the same as in the US store 512mb, keep looking it will be updated in a matter of minutes. Funny how they can build a powerful computer yet still can't manage to sync their website updates! :p

Just a quick question. In buying, I held off on memory as crucial would have better pricing. Does the same memory for the older MBP's work for these newer ones? Should I order the memory from crucial today or wait?

This is not a bad update, the VRAM and HD updates are definitely very nice. Although I find the multi touch trackpad to be overrated, bit of a prototype gimmick. Although the remote is also somewhat a gimmick, it's a pity it's been excluded from an 'out of box experience' point of view, those little quirks are what make a product more personal on a level.

I think we all knew the casing would remain. If I owned a perfectly functional Macbook Pro and was considering this update, I would wait as I think there will be a much nicer update by the end of this year with redesigned casing amongst other things. Before you know it we'll be in Q4.

Overall a great laptop for someone buying there first mac or replacing a very old model.

Ugh. Compared to my current MBP, it's a pretty decent update but not enough to warrant $2000 for a new machine! Bluray would have had me sold on buying a new one. I bought my MBP in March 2005, it's an 'old' 1.83GHz Core Duo. I guess I'll wait until xmas time or maybe until 2009 for a new one. :)

I'm dissapointed that they went with the 2.4GHz/3MB cache Penryn for the low-end MBP, although, given Apple's greed, I'm not really surprised they did (in fact, I predicted they would). Sigh. Also, still no user replaceable hd.

Does anyone know how the 2.4Ghz/3MB Penryn compares with 2.2Ghz/4MB Merom? How about the 2.4Ghz/3MB Penryn vs. the 2.5Ghz/6MB Penryn? I mean, unless the difference is >20% (at least for some tasks), I don't think paying a $500 premium for little bit more hd space and gobs of, for the most part unusable VRAM , makes sense.

The Penryn processors would be faster, even though the L2 is smaller. You shouldn't blame Apple (totally) the CPU is all Intels doing. With the process shrink you will see clock speeds go up farther (for a given TDP). It just takes some time, remember this is the first of the 45nm CPU's so it may take Intel some time to get the binning right.

the macbook pros need a facelift badly...... I will pass and stick with my Air.

I personally think the design of macbook pro does not need to be changed. Wht should be done is some minor adjustments, particulally with bringing 3 usb ports onto the 15' version. If they could put a dual link DVI connection in a mini-dvi port, they would have room on the right side of the notebook to add one more usb port.

At least they should have put the magnetic latch for a start.

True that should been changed. Though the current design is magnetic....with a mechanical latch as well.

Glad no major overhaul... prepares the way for WWDC

I was anxiously waiting for this the past month but after noticing how much I do not use a DVD/CD drive and burn seldom, I agree with Apple that they should build laptops for the wireless world.
If I want to watch a movie, I'll download it to my hard drive and watch it there. Shoot with no internal drive I'm sure they could squeeze in two more hard drives and get it close to 1TB.
I would much rather have that built in than an optical drive! So now I'm glad it's just a revision and not a MAJOR overhaul, because when they decide to do that for WWDC... you talk about ecstatic!!

In about two days....I FINALLY get to throw my Vaio off the pier and into the Pacific ocean. Good riddance you piece of ****

and i was considering buying a MBP 2 weeks ago and the topped out processor was a 2.6! It still is so, at WWDC there will be faster processors for sure!

That's me. First Mac. Really old laptop. I have a 6 year old laptop (with windows 2k) that I really needed to update.
