Newly Converted!!!

I've been considering switching over to macs for quite a while now... and ever since I had decided to make the leap over to Macs, I've been creeping around these forums... and boy am I glad I did!

Just ordered my FIRST mac ever (low end 15" MBP)! woo hoo! :D (and this is my first ever post on MR, too!)

Thanks to everyone for giving me the strength to hold out until the updates came! Believe it or not, these forums acted as a support group for me; letting me know I wasn't alone in waiting! :apple:

In my experience, video capture (e.g camera to HDD for editing) is no fun on a 4200 RPM drive.

ah ok thanks, dont think that will be a problem for me

does anyone know if the prices on the website are inclusive of tax? when i go to new york i plan on picking up one and wanna know if i get hit with a huge tax on top of the price

So here's the question...

Do I get the refurbished 2.4, 160HD 5400rpm HD, 256MB NVidia, 2GB Ram for 1860 (include shipping)

or

2.6, 200HD 7200rpm HD, 512MB NVidia, 2GB Ram for 2700 (include shipping)

which do you think?

I am surprised that they did not take the oportunity to add a Magnetic Latch. Based on the picture still looks like it is using the hook. It has been a long time now that the MB got the Mag latch, but still not in the PRO. Not sure why.

We all can guess, but I would love to hear an official answer.

As I stated several times before, no new case re-design is coming before Feb/March 2009. Just some touches. A year more guys.

Nice bump

kiskadee mentioned a 10% difference in the 2.4 vs 2.5. Does this take into account the cache ?

I use my MBP for two things... 1. Web development where I usually have 6 spaces going with tons of apps open. 2. Converting video to mp4

Can anyone tell me whether double the cache and vram is worth it for my needs ?

It was a cpu test without real specifications. link:

T8100 is equal to the T7500 in speed.

T8300 is about 10% faster than the T8100.

The T9300 is 20% faster than the T8100 (and T7500) and 10% faster than the T8300.

These figures are based on wPrime32 results which is a CPU benchmarking program.

Hope that helps you decide

It's your $940 ... :D

Honestly I'm asking. I don't know enough about computers to know if I'll notice the difference.

If you can afford the $940, go with the latter setup unless you are buying it for web browsing and word processing, then go with the first one.

Mediocre Innovation, but I will take it

Too bad Apple dropped the ball on the HDDs with this one.... what where they thinking with a 300GB 4300 rpm drive.... and I am sure it has been beaten to death already,

But the MT is nice.

Just what I expected with Apple, mediocrity and nothing special, absolutely no innovation whatsoever, like I expected.

I am going to play it safe and get this model before they put that God awful MacBook keyboard in the MacBook Pro.

Depends on what you do. IMHO at that price difference I would go for the cheaper one as the specs are not that different. It has a nice kick and for that price it looks like a steal.

If you need extra CPU power and extra Memory badwidth and a faster disk, then the more expensive one is the ticket.

It all depends on what you plan to use it for and what percent of the time you are going to need the extra kick.

The extra kick may mean just 10 or 20 seconds saved, sometimes that makes a difference, sometimes it does not.

One thing to consider ...... Cheaper model with extra memory if you run a lot of apps at the same time, and still have enough money to take the Lady out to dinner a few times or save for the next computer.

A rather predictable update with Apple once more emphasizing more megahertz then a more balanced MacBook Pro or at a lower price.

I think we'd all sacrifice half a clock speed multiplier or two for a cheaper laptop.

Another approach would be to split the difference and configure the new middle-ground 2.5 machine to your liking. I really think that is the sweet spot regarding bang for the buck. This is what I will be getting.

Still no redesign. FAIL!

I can't believe that we're in 2008 and the MBP still doesn't have a magnetic latch. I was assuming it would get a MBA keyboard as well.

I agree... I would sacrifice an tenth of an inch on the case or a complete redesigen for more hardware options. I will be waiting forever for my dual HD, and Dual 2.8GHz processor MacBook Pro.

And I am sure that many users would love to spec DOWN the low end to dual 2.1 or 2.2GHz chips to shave off $250-$300.

I agree.... Apple is failing with the design of the MacBook Pro. I would have loved to see the MB keyboard in this model only if they redesigned the entire case and added more ports etc. The magnetic latch should have been in this revision, but I am glad that we at least got MT.

Go with the faster speed. If Apple used the zif socket I would say go with the smaller one and upgrade later.

In theory maybe.

According to barefeats, vram above 128 makes no or very small difference in the games that they tested.

I wonder what the differences would have been if BF used AA.

512 MB vram is mo' betta!! :D

When you upgrade to the high resolution screen you get the LED backlighting.

Yes, but beware, the high resolution makes everything smaller, I could hardly see some of my preview windows they were like postage stamps when I bought one in the Autumn. Changing the resolution degraded the quality so in the end I sent it back and decided to wait for the next update. I'm not getting any younger and it was doing my eyes in.

I think I'm buying now, top spec 17", ASAP!!! Yippee!

What bugs me the most is that Intel is now getting away with half multipliers again. 100 MHz increments for the next processor model up when it was 200 MHz on 65nm Core 2.

It was nice when it was 2.0 -> 2.2 -> 2.4 -> 2.6.

The same issue is cropping up on the desktops as well. Past 266 to 333 MHz jumps are now cut in half.

Apple never got the 3 GHz G5 so I guess they're obsessed with having the most expensive processors while skimping on other features.

I'm sorry, but i dont understand. Why is everyone so worked up about the magnetic latch. I thought thats what a MagSafe Power Adapter was...
