Wow! LED option on the 17" screen? I am shocked. Apple would be the first to market with this, no?

w00t.

Nobody has answered this yet:
When are they gonna be available at retail stores?. Is it normally happening the very same day they're announced?.
Didn't the whole rumor started because shipments where detected during the weekend?

Hey everyone

Just wanted to say that I have put in my order today for the base 15" MBP - I am so excited about it!

As you can see from my sig I am seriously going up in power and specs so hopefully this will be another keeper for me as the last has been. Although I got that while I was a student so now I have much more cash it will mean hopefully I can start saving for my Mac Pro now - oh yeeeeeah! :D:D:D

... nice to see they are using the same case as well - it still ignites sexual urges within me everytime i look at it... hard to just type this message when i get these feelings rising within me... (shivers)

More info than any of us needed, I'm sure and a picture that could have been avoided.

Wow and some people waited how long for this update ?

the over hype of everything apple is what is killing the apple stock.
People are up to their hype game and failure to meet szome of their hype.

Pitiful

As already stated this update is a minor spec boost over the existing SR MPBs.

The only thing really notable is the switch to Penryn which brings a 5-10% gain in battery life and about 1-10% in performance for regular tasks. The only big improvement is in applications which take advantage of SSE4. (media encoding etc..)

To be honest it makes used SR MBPs look like amazing deals.

This is true, but as far as I am aware all next gen Intel chips will have this included with some new technologies. So I think all apps in the future will have this code written in, just as they did for multi-processing.

Buy a PS3 for Blu-Ray and you can stream media if you have medialink.

That's my blu-ray player. I like it.

Thing is, there's a next gen victor now and so long as we have optical drives, there's no real reason to continue with dvd. For those of us who enjoy working in digital photo & video, it would be convenient for us to have the option to burn large files and collections onto a single (30 gb - 50 gb) scratch-resistant disc. With the megapixel wars commencing in the digital photo world, those file sizes just keep getting bigger and bigger.

Plus, as we replace our old optical media or supplement it with new high def optical media, we want to be able to play it wherever we go (or at least we want the option), and we don't have that option with a standard drive.

Blu-ray isn't a necessary feature for most users, but it would be a very, very nice option for several of us.

I would probably go with the 250GB 5400 RPM, there is potential for the 4200 RPM to be a bit of a bottleneck, a crime with such a nice machine.

I'm actually waffling over going with the 200GB 7200 vs 250GB 5400 myself.

JT

Exactly. In a laptop, 200 GB is plenty when you can easily buy an external drive and store all your space occupying videos which you watch only once in a while. And I would definitely buy a 200GB 7200 rpm than a 250GB 5400 rpm (and much worse the 4200 rpm one). HDD is the bottleneck today in today's computer components. That's why any custom built performance desktop guy will look for a 10000rpm drive (Raptor, for eg).

Go for 7200 rpm. It is worth even with its mildly higher heat generation.

Yes it does. The previous gen MBP is everybit what this gen is unless you are a gamer in need of the extra VRAM.

Yes, and get that nice OWC/Mac Sales Mercury Elite Pro Firewire 800/400/USB 2 external case and you are set.

I have the 7200rpm 200 gig -- it is the way to go. Especially if you are running virtual machines as I am. Makes the whole set a lot faster.

Now that is actually not a bad idea. But I think I'll wait for the 500GB HDs to come out to do that.

I've been wanting to do it for a while. :) I have a 1.83GHz MBP with a measly 80GB drive. This is my first Mac laptop so I haven't done much the same "geeky" stuff with Apple stuff as I have done with Win/PC stuff. I have a Logiccube Sonix machine on my desk at work that I will try to test with next Monday. Hopefully I can dupe a drive from 80GB (OSX and WinXP partitions) to say about 200-250GB, those drives should be getting pretty cheap soon!

I like the hi-res idea..

I like the idea of having multiple resolution options on the MBPs... Now just move that ability over to the 15" and I'll upgrade!

I called the local Apple store here (Charlotte, NC). They don't have them in now, but may be getting them in a shipment either this afternoon or tomorrow. I'd suggest calling your local store to find out if they have 'em and, if so, what configs they have.

Same old keyboard...

This computer is looking TIRED. C'mon the least I thought they would do is bring the keyboard into line with the rest of the models.

Considering the fact that I'm willing to pay the 500EUR difference between a blackbook and a mbp just for that sleek sexy alubook-era keyboard, I think they should actually bring the mbp keyboard to the mb line.

This is a thing of beauty.

Agreed, I have Raptor boot drives on my desktop machines.

I hope they have some of the 7200 RPM configs in-store .

It totally agree. Where is the research and development it this? The old keyboard sticks out like sore thumb in this range. Apple have always been about beautiful design as well as function. I liked the old keyboard in the MBP when it first came out, but having seen the new 'boards in the Air and the MB I have to say this seems stuck in the past.

can't please everyone

i cant believe half the post so far are complaints...

but thank god its here so we can stop hearing about it, at least for now..

;)you're right...that's human nature...but i know deep inside, they're happy for at least APPLE made the updates...

for me, i'll wait for a couple of weeks before i buy one, don't want to be the G.P. at this time...still have enough prozac to keep me occupied...

Um, why did you buy Apple ram maxed out? They charge a SIGNIFICANT premium. You should cancel that order and reorder it with the standard 2GB. Then go to crucial or owc and buy their ram for less than half the price, and you can even sell the ram you take out, making it even cheaper. Also, I imagine that you got the 2.6 instead of the 2.5 processor, which is also a bad move as it's $250 for a 0.1 GHz (negligible) improvement with absolutely no increase in cores, bus speed, or cache.

As for the hi-res LED and the 7200 RPM HDD, I concur.

Reorder it my friend.

Dude... I could care less... I bought it with my Corporate Card. Not my money. The Wife thing was a joke. However when I bring it home - she will think I bought it myself anyway.
