I would love to see some Benchmarks:

2.4 penryn--> 2.5 penryn
2.4 sr ---> 2.4 penryn
200gb 5400 ----> 200gb 7200.

Have to wait 12 days for the mbp to arrive at portugal apple store, cant wait :D.

Just disappointed with the no maglatch 3mbL2, and the damn 8600gt.

Ether way, need a Laptop and im going the :apple: way .

I just ordered a stock 2.4 model. I need to max out the ram.

Does the MBP come with 2 sticks of 1GB? To upgrade, do I need to buy 2 sticks of 2GB?

I wish the new MBP had a new look! Enough Aluminum!

The upgraded specs are awesome, but I am sort of tired of seeing the same old aluminum finish. I have had my 17" PB now for four years and would love it if Apple would have at least changed the keyboard color to match the MBA. When I buy my next laptop, I sort of want to feel like I got a new laptop. Hope this makes sense! LOL

True, the top row has a lot of media buttons and the brightness buttons for the screen and keyboard are bumped to the left now.

Here's a shot of my keyboard

There isn't a NUMLOCK key on the keyboards either.... the "embedded" number pad is gone off of the keys too, and the ENTER button has been replaced by a second option button....

Nothing pisses me off, but nothing was really needed either.

Is there a sweet spot?

The 2.4 looks like the sweet deal here. Interesting.

No Time Capsule yet...

Not so sure about that. I will be awaiting results compared to the 2.4 Merom. The Merom 2.4GHz had 4MB cache, and the Penryn 2.4GHz has 3MB cache. (Sorry if this has already been pointed out, but there are already 29 pages and counting.)

AWESOME!

Now I don't wanna seem like a walking stereotype, but no magnetic latch? MacBook HDD bigger than MBP?

EDIT: So will the 1 less MB of L2 cache make much of a difference?

No magnetic latch, yes a bummer

But only the high end MacBook has a HDD that is larger than the low end and mid range MacBook Pros. The 17" gets the same 250GB hard drive. I just wish the MBP's drives were user replaceable at least..... even if Apple just gave us the option to take a 320GB or 500GB drive into the Apple Store and have THEM swap it out, that would be appreciated. Now that CompUSA is closed only the Ma and Pa tech stores can do certified Apple upgrades without voiding warranties.

JUST BOUGHT MINE!!

-15.4In
-2.6GHz
-250GB HD
-4GB RAM

Im kinda sad that theres no major redesign and that the trackpad is the same size and not the MBA size. And, that theres no black option

seriously, with the way HD prices have come down, why in the world would apple not make 250GB standard and 500gb on the 1499 model????
I guess we'll see another update pretty soon.

Completely Agreed! Apple's always been a little funny about their displays. I have heard through the ethernet cable that they choose higher quality, tighter tolerance* displays on their cinemas as well as their laptops. If this is true, then that may suggest that a high res 15" screen at high quality is just not economical or very available.

Difficult to believe, today, given that high-end PC laptops had 15" 1920x1200 LCDs 4-5 years ago.

Apple should be embarassed not to have at least an _option_ for that sort of LCD in the 15" MBPs.

What I'm really waiting for, however, is for Apple to cater to the business user, with a 12" PB replacement + docking station.

The Penryn is on the Santa Rosa platform. The same platform the Merom is on. Don't expect much of a performance increase. With the only exception on media centric applications that have been compiled with SSE4.

Yes. I recommend Crucial. 2 2GB sticks for $100,give or take.

I was wondering if someone can tell what RAM apple put inside those puppies.

DDR667 or DDR800

Cheers!

LED backlit screen / Battery Life ?

With an LED backlit screen ? No.

I had 2 chat sessions with Apple guys. Both said that the new 15" MBP has a LED backlit screen. For some reason I am confused whether the earlier Merom based 15" MBP had a LED backlit screen ?

From the apple website - LED backlit displays
Both 15-inch MacBook Pro models feature power-saving, LED backlit widescreen displays.

About the battery life - it went down from 5 (or 6??) hrs to 4.5 hrs for the MB with the Merom to Penryn upgrade. What about MBP ? The specs as well as the Apple Expert said its 5 hrs but its to be seen with benchmarks !
I am still holding on for benchmarks to trickle in.
BTW, what has lef tme in 2 minds is that the Merom based 15" MBP comes for 1499 now !
Again, with an education discount it should not be a tough decision for me to go for the Penryn ones. (Perhaps I needed to think aloud here to back myself in my decision):D

HELP this ram thing is confusing to this Newbie.

I just purchased the 2.6 model with the 7200 hd and did not do the ram upgrade as advised by members one the board here but I see that it comes configured with 2 sticks of ram 1and 1.

so now I have to go get 2 sticks of ram 2 gigs each or can one get a 3gig stick..

I am going to need the extra ram as I plan to do a dual boot for the time being until I can leave the dark side forever!

could someone point me in the right direction or I am going to have to revise my order just get the ram from them as I dont want to get it and not know what to do!

I dunno, I personally like the keyboard of my PowerBook much better than the new MacBook keyboards.

And yes, we're influenced by design, etc, but I would hope that's not the sole influence when deciding upon a purchase.

Then yeah, you've misunderstood my post. It'd certainly not be the sole influence else it'd be just as easy to buy the prettiest looking empty case on eBay :p

The way the MBP stands with me at the moment is, I'd quite like one but can't logically justify one as long as the PB is working and bearable for its purpose. Often when buying things we tend to use both logic and emotion (I know about marketing, well a little anyway), with quite a lot of weight being put on the emotional side when it comes to Apple's gear. Sometimes whilst there aren't enough logical reasons to buy something, the deficit is made up through emotional 'reasoning' ("ooooh...gadgets... shinyyyy...") and that's where you end up buying things that are "nice to have" as opposed to "highly beneficial to have".

The PB/MBP situation with me at the moment is, the PB is struggling a little but not enough to be a deciding factor on its own. If it had the "ooh new shiny things that I must have now" factor that Apple are so good at usually, I would probably be "weakened" enough to seriously consider a purchase. Apple are often very good at getting people lusting over their stuff - enough to purchase in many cases - even though the customer's not really gaining much over what they have already, or even over cheaper alternatives from the same company (MacBook Air, anyone? hehe *plants tongue in cheek*)

I am willing to admit that I do get influenced this way to a certain extent, and have frequently noticed others here being influenced like that and desperately trying to find excuses to make it sound like a decision made purely with 100% logic. I'm half kidding with the MBA example, but I've seen a lot of people claiming that a few grams of weight will make a huge difference to their daily lives, rather than admitting that they want it / bought it (over the standard MB) because it's a gorgeous piece of kit and awe-inspiring engineering that just makes you want it.

The more important influence on the MBP though would be the keyboard - everyone has their own tastes I guess, but I far prefer the new keyboard which I'm currently using (same design) on the iMac. It may sound like a small thing, but far from it... IMO the input (keyboard/mouse) and output (screen) are some of the most important parts of a computer for Getting Right, because those are the parts you are consciously interacting with.

Hope that explains it more clearly!

Funny enough I am quite tempted go the standard MacBook route. There were reasons for getting the PB over the iBook that don't exist nowadays (spanning vs. mirroring for external displays) or are less important (duties that were transferred to the iMac when I bought that). Combined with the more portable size and my preference of keyboard, it could be just the answer...
