I dont own a mac, but I love them , I was waiting for the new MBP to arrive and buy it, and its here:D I wont spend time expressing how :D I feel cause that would take some time...

BUT:rolleyes:

How probable is it that in a few months apple re-upgrades the MPB and idk, blue ray included or maybe different designs

That would piss me off and many MPB costumers that are buying right now the latest model.

So ?
Anything is possible. The will definitely be a (major) upgrade come August for the new Intel chipset. If you always wait for an upgrade it will come but then you will always be waiting.

Does it need a re-design? It is the sexiest laptop out there.

I agree. Personally I love the current case design even if it has been around for a while. The Air is nice and thin but I'm not thinking that I would like to see anything else about its design translated to the Pro. Especially not the keyboard..

I have a Core Duo 2.0Ghz Macbook Pro (ATI X1600, with 7800rpm disk option) - bought May 2006.

I'm toying with the idea of upgrading to one of these new ones. But...I'm also considering an iMac 24" 2.8 instead - on the basis of screen size: I do a lot with Aperture these days and like to see as many pixels on screen of a photo as possible.

It would be a shame to lose portability though, and with the 1900x1200 option on the 17inch macbook pro, I'm now interested in that. (Only a $100 extra!)

Could anybody who gets one of these tell me how useable this screen resolution is on a screen of this size? Is it a little too 'dense' and small? (Maybe even a test with Aperture?)

Also, generally, how will speed compare with my existing Macbook pro? Worth an upgrade? Or will I see a much bigger jump with a 2.8 Ex iMac?

You have to figure out what you need the most. If by portability you mean having it on your lap in bed or something, then by all means go for what you need most, which is an Imac. But if you do go out with it alot, and your business (whatever that may be) will be severely impeded by not having a laptop, then go for the kill. Or of course, you can stay with your laptop and just buy an Imac (and save a bundle by just buying an Imac). Im in the boat as you as I also have a 2.16 GHz first gen. MBP, but will upgrade to another laptop, probably this one, as I am in need of better performance.

Im having mixed answer on the L2 cache's impact on performance. Do you guys have any comparisons between the two? (Penryn T9300 2.5Ghz 6MB L2 vs. T8300 2.4Ghz 3MB L2 cache)

Portability isn't essential, but very useful from time to time. I suppose, I'm just saying that with the 17" Macbook Pro now coming with the same desktop screen estate (with the option) as the 24" iMac, what will the display be like?

[Apple] also gave an awesome high end 15" that will rival any laptop in its class.

What kind of fantasyworld are people living in on this forum ? Even the (usually easily-led by Apple) press are aware this is anything but a rival to similarly placed machines.

Lack of Display Resolution Update Spoils New MacBook

Given that they trade on being cutting-edge and innovative, it is clear their real skill is in marketing tired technology to the easily impressed. Low-res screens, no Blu-Ray, same trackpad, same keyboard, same aluminium casing for many years etc.

Don't forget Steve Jobs claimed the MacBook Air keyboard was 'the best keyboard Apple has ever produced'. Isn't there a single person on this forum that thinks paying top dollar for Apple's most expensive laptops means you should also get their 'best' keyboard? Regardless of what you think of it yourself, by their own admission Apple acknowledge that it is, at best, only their second-best.

Same goes for the trackpad. The MBA gets a large trackpad, to better use the new software options in multitouch, but the more expensive model doesn't? WTF?

The speed bumps are welcome, of course, as is the boost to the graphics. But I can't be alone in feeling Apple are obssessed by the 'consumer' market, and pro users are being left behind. The 15.4" MacBook Pro I was intending to buy simply isn't worth the cash they're asking.

I love the new MBP features! for some reason though, I don't see myself rushing out to get one as quickly, even though I've been waiting for a chance to get a MBP. I really wanted to see a huge major change, but hey maybe that'll be worth the wait in a few months.... hope so! For some resason, I'm just waiting for a major hardware upgrade, same with my situation on the :apple:TV... who knows I might break down and just buy this one. Any suggestions? Will it be worth the wait to see what comes out in 6-10 months time?

Also, how the the damn world do they not include an Apple Remote with this expensive laptop???????

now they are cutting back on features and accessories?

apple is in danger of turning into microsoft

I know it's nitpicky, but it's one of the few things I dislike about Apple. They've been doing it for years with the iPod line (used to come with a power supply), the iPod touch new apps for existing owners and now the $19 remote for the MacBook line.

Regardless, this new upgraded line of MacBook and MacBook Pros are nice.

To return or not to return?

Hi guys, I've been following this forum (esp. the speculation threads about updates) very closely, the past 2 weeks or so..

I'm currently in dire need of a new MBP and will recieve one tomorrow (Wed.)..
I'll be getting the 'old' entrylevel MBP (2.2 gHz, 2g RAM etc. - ordered 13th Feb.)

As I did expect this scenario to unfold, I made a call to Apple prior to placing the order.
Obviously, I'll have the option to refund, minus the £60 fee.
Also, the rep told me they'd be willing to offer me cash rebate, if I keep the one I ordered.
I had this confirmed today, so no worries there.

My question to you all is;
Should I return the MBP tomorrow, get the refund and re-order the new entrylevel MBP??
Thing is, I reeeally need to be able to start working on it, BUT - not so much that I feel like cheating myself..
I don't care about storage space, much less the trackpad and slightly more about the latch.
I DO care about speed (CPU), RAM and esp. graphics. I will be using it exclusively for graphic design, in intense periods and on large files/images. (Think 400+mb Photoshop files..)

Considering the fact that time is a factor, but also my money's worth, what should I opt for?? - Returning = more waiting, less work (and $$$), keeping = savings (rebate) & more work, but less juice for my $$$.

Help me, pls!
Thx.

PS: Great forum, good vibe in here... :D

I am happy with the update, I have been waiting since October to upgrade my G5 to a MBP and would have bought whatever got released! I think to the average user these updates in speeds are not gonna matter to much and these benchmark tests can get a bit anal. If a new case design or anything 'significant' gets released in the summer then I will just sell the Penryn and get the new model, no big deal, they hold their value pretty well.

I have a question though...

In the UK the 7200 rpm is £60 more than the 5400 rpm. The cost is not a problem but what is the offset between the increase of speed and heat/power consumption? I presume as they run faster they will use more power and give off more heat? How would it effect day to day use having that extra speed and at what cost? Basically is it worth the £60?!

I can't justify the £300 leap to the 2.5 model but unsure what the £60 leap will get me!

Thank you for any answers!

I can't wait to get it, I still have not even used Leopard yet!

Interestingly enough, I was looking for a wii and the xbox blog said it was no fun. weird.

Yet the author made a reasonable point, and backed it up with a meaningful comparison to a similarly specced Dell machine. You can't write of a negative comment as simply anti-Apple sentiment. Even with Penryn upgrades the 15.4" MBP is not keeping up as the example clearly demonstrated.

I asked myself a similar question since the old MBPs are a steal right now on amazon. In the end, I decided that the aggravation in 3-4 years when my new MBP was running a bit slow and I thought to myself "dammit, shoulda went with the penryn!" wasn't worth it.

If the 60 pounds isn't that important to you, I'd go with the penryn just so you won't feel like you have dated technology immediately.

(Please, those inclined to -- and you know who you are -- spare me the "but the new mbps are dated technology!" replies.)

yay! bout damn time! now i dont have to read useless comments about updated macbook pros! now bring me my SDK!

Maxing out memory...

Can anyone recommend a good manufacturer of memory? I want to max my recently ordered 2.5 15" MBP out, but I went to crucial website and they are out of stock. Should I wait until they are back in stock?

I chose to make my point with a wii example for a reason. Gamers will argue about tech specs and processing power and all that jazz for years. I own both a 360 and a wii. They serve two different purposes. Anyway, you could get a 360 or a ps3 but the wii is more fun IMO. To put it another way (and I don't know the specifics), the tech in the wii is only slightly better than a PS2 which can be had for $100. But it's the software (games) and the design/innovation that makes the wii so much better.

I don't understand when people compare tech specs on pc vs mac. It's not the same animal. I can understand dell vs hp or dell vs sony, etc.

Would more screen resolution options be better? Sure. But look at all that you get with the mac -- if in fact, you want to use osx (and windows if you need to).

personally I am happy I waited and happy with what they put out....put out..allll righttt..... anywho, I was going to buy a refurb, with less features and it was going to cost me more, now, with my gfs student discount, im saving about 300 bucks and have up to date technology. And say they do update in AUG, I am sure that I can sell my MBP with CS3 prob for just as much if not more. Best way to get your money back is loading it with software you "borrowed" jk......;)

Please move this tired old horse (Apple not keeping up with specs from PC companies) to another thread, thanks.

I just bought the 2.4 ghz MBP 13 days ago. I have one day to decide if I should take it back and get the 2.5 $2499 upgraded one. Problem is, I have to pay the restocking fee -- $250.

Is it worth it?

I got a MBP last week as a gift...
I thought about returning it too, but why. Is spending $250 worth it to me for a tiny speed bump and the touch pad? I decided it wasn't.

You asked is it worth it... only YOU can decide that for yourself.

Why do they offer a 300GB drive with only 4200rpm? It should better ship with the 3200GB 5400rpm drive.

The upgrade prices are silly. Why do you pay £60 for the full HD display but £240 for additional 2GB RAM?

I don't understand when people compare tech specs on pc vs mac. It's not the same animal.

That's precisely the point; since the move to Intel it is much more of a direct comparison. In user experience terms, it's certainly about 'pc vs mac'. In terms of hardware (the theme of this thread) it's not.

I like MacOS, and am keen to buy a MacBook Pro, but my original point still stands: the upgraded MBP is not worth the money. Its hardware represents a slip in terms of innovation and development as evidenced by the example in the article. I'm sorry to say that it is entirely meaningful(in a way the Xbox and Wii are not) to make hardware/price comparisons to similarly setup machines.

If what you're really saying is that we should suspend our critical faculties since Apple stuff is somehow different, then you're sadly deluded.

And remember, I'm a Mac user myself, not a switcher. A Windows user looking to make the jump will make a harsher judgement in my view. Apple aren't keeping up, simple as that.

While this is generally a good update, I also am a little surprised about the size of the trackpad. Nothing else is shocking.

Apple always announces redesigns to hardware at Apple Events. If there was to be any kind of new case or anything like that, for either the Macbook or Macbook Pro, the media would be present like always.
