People asked for an update, they got one. So what's with all the complaining??

You know apple wouldn't make a major update, it's not in their nature, so please just deal with it!!

I had 2 chat sessions with Apple guys. Both said that the new 15" MBP has a LED backlit screen. For some reason I am confused whether the earlier Merom based 15" MBP had a LED backlit screen ?
I think the November '07 MBP update introduced the LED backlight

seriously, with the way HD prices have come down, why in the world would apple not make 250GB standard and 500gb on the 1499 model????
I guess we'll see another update pretty soon.

The 500GB Samsung hasn't been produced in those numbers just yet, and I am sure that the PC makers will get their hands on a few million for each company before Apple even makes the update for the Books available.

250GB isn't that bad for a laptop either way unless they are editing umcompressed HD or HDV footage.

is it just me? or did Apple make the MacBook Pro look gunmetalish in color with the dark lighting in the promotional pictures? maybe a hint of what the next gen MBP will eventually look like? Personally, i believe the MBP will finally be redesigned with Montevina in WWDC. i mean, i doubt the trackpad will stay the current size, and i'm sure Apple will include the MBA sized trackpad on the new design. the current MBP is just to hold people over until Montevina comes out.

I just purchased the 2.6 model with the 7200 hd and did not do the ram upgrade as advised by members one the board here but I see that it comes configured with 2 sticks of ram 1and 1.

so now I have to go get 2 sticks of ram 2 gigs each or can one get a 3gig stick..

I am going to need the extra ram as I plan to do a dual boot for the time being until I can leave the dark side forever!

could someone point me in the right direction or I am going to have to revise my order just get the ram from them as I dont want to get it and not know what to do!

Ok. Yes. the MBP comes with 2X1GB RAM. SO you will need to remove both and buy and put 2X2GB RAM sticks. I always recommend Crucial (crucial.com), or as someone else posted earlier, go to newegg and look there. You will pay around 100, give or take, def. SIGNIFICANTLY less than the $400 upgrade from Apple.
As with the manual process, just google "how to manually install RAM on MBP" or something of the sort, all the manuals will pop up, both from Apple, and other Apple users. Cheers.

I didn't see gunmetal and honestly I think gunmetal is a grotesque color for a laptop.

I do hope that a redesign comes with Montevina and does include a trackpad as large as the MBA, hopefully with a larger button however.

I would also hope that it includes the specs I have in my sig.

oh yeah

Well, I've been watching and contributing since November for this update and I can say that I am finally typing away on my new Penyrn MBP!

BUT, I did pull the trigger on the old one EXACTLY 14 days ago, so I paid a restock fee today at the Apple store here in Atlanta. So, with my education discount and the restock fee, I paid regular price.

I am quite happy that I played my cards right on buying on a Tuesday, and part of that decision–making process was the result of hours on these forums, so there are happy endings after all.

Good luck everyone, and I have to say that the new model is definitely snappier than the old one.

I would love to see some Benchmarks:

2.4 penryn--> 2.5 penryn
2.4 sr ---> 2.4 penryn
200gb 5400 ----> 200gb 7200.

Have to wait 12 days for the mbp to arrive at portugal apple store, cant wait :D.

Just disappointed with the no maglatch 3mbL2, and the damn 8600gt.

Ether way, need a Laptop and im going the :apple: way .

it's not 2.4SR
it's 2.4 MEROM.

SANTA ROSA is the chipset
MEROM is the Core 2 Duo name used in June 2007 revision
Penryn is the Core 2 Duo name used in this new update

The Penryn processor right now is still in the Santa Rosa chipset =)

If they are snappier than the old ones than I know it's going to blow me away since i have the original Core 2 Duo models with a 2.16 processor. Then with the 4GB of RAM I know it won't take me 8 hours + to encoded uncompressed SD footage.

That's interesting to hear...man, I can't wait to get mine (ordered online this morning)!

Touch Pad Usage

I have read many posts in other threads about existing touchpads being updated via software ... unlikely since I understand it requires a specific chip as per iPhone.

Here are my questions, assuming the new MBP has the chip,

1. Will MBPs gain additional functionality through software or will they be forever restricted to the gestures currently on offer (half of which are already available on all MB models)

2. What do owners of MBAs use their gestures for ? ;) Are there many apps that use them effectively?

I have a Core Duo 2.0Ghz Macbook Pro (ATI X1600, with 7800rpm disk option) - bought May 2006.

I'm toying with the idea of upgrading to one of these new ones. But...I'm also considering an iMac 24" 2.8 instead - on the basis of screen size: I do a lot with Aperture these days and like to see as many pixels on screen of a photo as possible.

It would be a shame to lose portability though, and with the 1900x1200 option on the 17inch macbook pro, I'm now interested in that. (Only a $100 extra!)

Could anybody who gets one of these tell me how useable this screen resolution is on a screen of this size? Is it a little too 'dense' and small? (Maybe even a test with Aperture?)

Also, generally, how will speed compare with my existing Macbook pro? Worth an upgrade? Or will I see a much bigger jump with a 2.8 Ex iMac?

Is the 2.6 GHz have a 6mb cache or still the old processor priced at an upgrade? Where can I find some info about the speed differences between the 2.5 GHz and 2.6 GHz?

Thanks

* I'd buy a copied game ESPECIALLY if its 1yr old and STILL selling at 69.99CAN when our dollar is just about par...Resistance is over 1yr old, great game but should've dropped in price long ago ... and its replacement v2 is due in 4mths or less.
Just because a game hasn't gone done in price is no justification for piracy. Just go rent the game or buy it used.

Alternatively its probably better to check out the relevant Mac Guides:

You guys answer this:
[1] 15' Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz with 3mb L2 cache; or
[2] 15' Macbook Pro 2.5 Ghz with 6mb L2 cache

which one would you buy?

expensive and not green

Don't get me wrong will probably buy one, but, as has been pointed out, design is little changed, I have a Powerbook G4, and the cosmetic differences are small, it still has a perfectly good Monitor, keyboard, and case. Would it not be far greener just to be able to upgrade the overstretched electronics, over-full HD and re-use the rest? Also feel the price is still a little expensive £1300, in the UK , i.e. £300 to much for a 15in laptop, even one as good as this, Either Apple are making allot of money or they are very expensive to build.

Is it probable we get a surprise in a few months ?

I dont own a mac, but I love them , I was waiting for the new MBP to arrive and buy it, and its here:D I wont spend time expressing how :D I feel cause that would take some time...

BUT:rolleyes:

How probable is it that in a few months apple re-upgrades the MPB and idk, blue ray included or maybe different designs

That would piss me off and many MPB costumers that are buying right now the latest model.

So ?

2. What do owners of MBAs use their gestures for ? ;) Are there many apps that use them effectively?

The one thing.... the main thing I want to use MT on a track pad for is APERTURE and rotating and zooming into photos. Hopefully Apple planed for this, or they are going to give it to us SOON via update, or a 3rd party app can take care of that.

One thing that slows me down the most when editing through photos is rotating them and checking them for sharpness and clarity. If I can do this with MT that would be very welcomed.

Option two no matter what the price. Or if price does matter then option one... :D
