Hi guys, I've been following this forum (esp. the speculation threads about updates) very closely, the past 2 weeks or so..

I'm currently in dire need of a new MBP and will recieve one tomorrow (Wed.)..
I'll be getting the 'old' entrylevel MBP (2.2 gHz, 2g RAM etc. - ordered 13th Feb.)

As I did expect this scenario to unfold, I made a call to Apple prior to placing the order.
Obviously, I'll have the option to refund, minus the £60 fee.
Also, the rep told me they'd be willing to offer me cash rebate, if I keep the one I ordered.
I had this confirmed today, so no worries there.

My question to you all is;
Should I return the MBP tomorrow, get the refund and re-order the new entrylevel MBP??
Thing is, I reeeally need to be able to start working on it, BUT - not so much that I feel like cheating myself..
I don't care about storage space, much less the trackpad and slightly more about the latch.
I DO care about speed (CPU), RAM and esp. graphics. I will be using it exclusively for graphic design, in intense periods and on large files/images. (Think 400+mb Photoshop files..)

Considering the fact that time is a factor, but also my money's worth, what should I opt for?? - Returning = more waiting, less work (and $$$), keeping = savings (rebate) & more work, but less juice for my $$$.

Help me, pls!
Thx.

PS: Great forum, good vibe in here... :D
i'm at apple store right now...return it & they will only ask you to pay the restocking fee......goodluck

I really want to ditch my Dell laptop and get a MBP, but I have a feeling within the year or so, Blu-Ray will start being packaged in, and I have to fight the temptation to buy now and hold out for that.

~Dave

Like I said earlier, don't hold your breath for Blu-Ray. It may appear in the Mac Pro next January, but don't expect to see it anytime soon in either a Mac or Windows machine.

But Apple and MS want move people away from that format to HD delivery via their online services.

Hello sir ADC is not academic discount : its Apple Developer Connection .. program dedicated to developers on the Mac

Details : http://developer.apple.com/products/overview/select.html

ADC offers hardware discounts if you enrolled in a membership, these discounts are more than Academic discounts .

I bought the Entry level MBP ($1999) for $1599 as i am a ADC student member.

Wake up dude ! ignorance is not an excuse :D

Is the ADC membership available for anyone in college or is it just for students enrolled in a computer software program?
It says, "If you are 18 years of age or older and enrolled in a college or university, the ADC Student Membership provides the tools and resources you need to take your development skills to the next level."

So I assume you don't need to be a computer science student to get it. At least I hope not, because my studies have nothing to do with computer science!

See here.

If you're a student, you can join ADC for only $99, and the ADC discount brings the base price down to $1599 as opposed to $1799 with the regular academic discount.

Yeah ur rite .
PS : you dont need to be a computer science student . U need to be above 18 years and enrolled in a college or university. They need your Identification proof,
Course list or current subjects you are taking and College ID Card ... these should be faxed to them for your ADC student membership to be verified ..

Then its time 4 MBP purchase :D

I am going to wait about 14 days for the inevitable price drop or upgrade from the current release.

Seriously buddy do you expect a price drop on these releases ?
Go buy a Dell instead :D

The better option would be buy the Old 2.2 C2D from amazon for $1600 , they have huge discounts and rebates for MBP's

I've seen many complaints here about no included remotes and am curious: are people upset because of the principle of it (paying $19 for something that was once bundled in) or are you missing something that you truly can't do without? My fiancee has one that was bundled in with her MacBook about a year and a half ago, but hasn't taken it out of the plastic so obviously we haven't shown a demonstrated need for one.

If loosing the remote comes along with upgrades elsewhere in the machine at the same price point, I'll go with the hardware upgrades. However, I'm still curious to know how useful the remote has been to others out there. Maybe then we'll take ours out of the plastic. :D

Actually, yes. I have found the Apple Remote to be very useful. I had a 20" iMac about a year ago (which I sold because I wanted a MBP, which I now can finally buy, been waiting for a update :D). I used the remote a lot with my iMac, and plan to use it with my new MBP. I have really nice speakers, so I use my computer as a stereo (since all my songs are in iTunes anyway). The remote comes in handy if I want to change the song or volume from across the room. Also, When watching DVDs, I'll use the remote. And lastly, I plan to use the remote for presentations I have to do in school. SO , I am upset that I have to pay for something I found useful before that came as a part of the laptop package. But since $19 is not that much, especially since I will use it for all the said reasons, I'll pay the twenty bucks, its just an annoyance though, that and the twenty I'll be paying for my iPod Touch update:mad:

i just ordered mine :)

i got the 15" 2.4
upped the hd to 250 @ 5200
i might put more ram in it myself...i dont need to pay 400 for that...
got iwork preinstalled
with a protection plan

tax was a pain in the ass ($168)

final figures were around 2660...

im soo excitedddd

oh..
and i payed the $15 to get it shipped soooner...
it said 2-3 business days...

do they usually lean towards the 2 or the 3 days??

Only joshing. It was kind of in reference to the quick price drops/upgrades of the iPhone and Touch in recent history. Although Montevina is speculated to show up this summer...

Just curious: how long does it take them to verify your faxed info? And where does one go to see the exact discount offered on particular items?

i actually had the same exact question, also how much would the discount be on the MBP for $2499. i am very interested.

Refurbs are actually better in some ways than buying new. Apple rigorously tests their products before reselling them. New products are believed to be perfect from the factory so there aren't many tests on them. Which makes it really frustrating when you get the one in a million bad computer. The Apple online store has some really great deals on refurbs right now. I just bought a refurb Mac mini earlier this morning to put in the living room. The prices on refurbs have been cut drastically in the last few days which caused many people to believe the new MB and MBP would be released.

Thanks for the reply
my friends work at the university bookstore and i believe she can get a employer's discount on top of the education discount, not sure how much but at least 5% which will bring the mbp to $1710 (live in oregon, no tax)
Till i find out how much discount she can get im gonna do morwe thinking :)
Meanwhile i still need to get rid of my Asus W3J laptop to fund my mbp :(

I have no idea how long it takes them to verify your info as I haven't actually signed up yet  .

The ADC Hardware Purchase Program Store is here and it shows you the exact discounts.

I am trying to decide whether to spend $70 on upgrading to the 7200rpm drive. I am thinking I probably will, since the MBP hard drive is not user-upgradable.

Won't that faster drive be a greater draw on the battery?

Thx for your reply!! I'm kinda inclined to return, the processor is really crucial to me...
Anybody else has thoughts on this?

Thx

See the new post on front page of this MacRumors website.

There is basically no performance or battery life difference between these new units and generation behind them.

Keep what you have. Likely to be more reliable. Who knows what evil lurks in these new chips with all issues Intel had with them. No thanks.

You already have the more stable machine.

Read the new article carefully.

ive been reading these forums for about two years now and i figured now was the time to finally post.

these updates, i agree are great...but ive come up with one conclusion that goes for me, and it looks like for a lot of other people out there.

The thing that everyone wants is a macbook hybrid. They want this feature on this other laptop.

For instance, my perfect macbook is black like the blackbook, with a keyboard like the MBA, sporting the multi-touch, innards, and screen size of a MBP.

I do think that the macbook line is by far the most sexy line-up out there, but some design features on the MBP confuse me.

I'm not very partial to the MBP's keyboard. I'm sure I could get used to it, especially since I plan to have it hooked up to an external monitor while I'm in my dorm with a wireless keyboard and mouse, but i still would like to be able to type comfortably while at class.

I would think that Apple was trying to move away from their old keyboards to the new chicklet key keyboards. Every single keyboard that Apple makes right now is identical, except that of the MBP, so the lack of a keyboard change in the MBP surprises me.

I can deal without the maglatch, even though, again, both of the other macbooks have such a feature. Where there are moving parts, there is a possibility of damage, and for a pro machine, I would expect to have a reliable piece of technology that won't have plastic parts in danger of breaking.

In short, I'm a PC-user who can't wait to leave piece of junk windows behind. I'm ready for my first mac now and will purchase one regardless next month.

My only problem is I simply can't decide whether to go for the MB or the MBP! An MBA doesn't suit my needs currently.

I have no clue which pros outweigh which cons.

with a macbook I get no multi-touch, 15 inch screen, or back-lit keyboard, but I do get a black computer with a preferred keyboard ,and maglatch.

with a MBP, I get a not black but still sexy laptop with a slightly uncomfortable keyboard (that I guess I would eventually get used to), without the maglatch, but do get my multi-touch, size, and power.

any suggestions as to which I should lean towards? thanks a lot!
