You are going to wait a very long time.

Not 14 days my friend, more like 14 weeks.

Apparently you missed my reply to an earlier response of the same post.

I am going to wait about 14 days for the inevitable price drop or upgrade from the current release.

Seriously buddy do you expect a price drop on these releases ?
Go buy a Dell instead :D

The better option would be buy the Old 2.2 C2D from amazon for $1600 , they have huge discounts and rebates for MBP's

Only joshing. It was kind of in reference to the quick price drops/upgrades of the iPhone and Touch in recent history. Although Montevina is speculated to show up this summer...

ive been reading these forums for about two years now and i figured now was the time to finally post.

these updates, i agree are great...but ive come up with one conclusion that goes for me, and it looks like for a lot of other people out there.

The thing that everyone wants is a macbook hybrid. They want this feature on this other laptop.

For instance, my perfect macbook is black like the blackbook, with a keyboard like the MBA, sporting the multi-touch, innards, and screen size of a MBP.

I do think that the macbook line is by far the most sexy line-up out there, but some design features on the MBP confuse me.

I'm not very partial to the MBP's keyboard. I'm sure I could get used to it, especially since I plan to have it hooked up to an external monitor while I'm in my dorm with a wireless keyboard and mouse, but i still would like to be able to type comfortably while at class.

I would think that Apple was trying to move away from their old keyboards to the new chicklet key keyboards. Every single keyboard that Apple makes right now is identical, except that of the MBP, so the lack of a keyboard change in the MBP surprises me.

I can deal without the maglatch, even though, again, both of the other macbooks have such a feature. Where there are moving parts, there is a possibility of damage, and for a pro machine, I would expect to have a reliable piece of technology that won't have plastic parts in danger of breaking.

In short, I'm a PC-user who can't wait to leave piece of junk windows behind. I'm ready for my first mac now and will purchase one regardless next month.

My only problem is I simply can't decide whether to go for the MB or the MBP! An MBA doesn't suit my needs currently.

I have no clue which pros outweigh which cons.

with a macbook I get no multi-touch, 15 inch screen, or back-lit keyboard, but I do get a black computer with a preferred keyboard ,and maglatch.

with a MBP, I get a not black but still sexy laptop with a slightly uncomfortable keyboard (that I guess I would eventually get used to), without the maglatch, but do get my multi-touch, size, and power.

any suggestions as to which I should lean towards? thanks a lot!

Wait for the next update to the mbp. It most likely will finally include a case redesign that brings it in line with the rest of the macbook, mba, family. It will also bring the montevina motherboard, improved GPU card, blu-ray, etc.
It will be the laptop to own and everyone will know it.

The current mbp is nice but outdated by the current Apple design standards. It will probably look very very old after this summer.

Speed?

Okay -

I'm at a dilemma.

Is it worth the extra $500 to get the 2.5Ghz over the 2.4Ghz on the new Penryn 15"?

I understand it also doubles the Video Memory, and adds more HD space. Speed-wise, though. Will it be a huge difference?

The speed difference wont be too noticeable, but the other stat increases are worth it in my opinion

Well, you know what the differences are... Only you can tell you which is more important.

I haven't tried the multi-touch yet, so I have no idea if I'll find it useful. I don't need a backlit keyboard - I don't need to see to type - I don't especially like black notebooks and I don't care for the new-style keyboard. So the main thing the MB has for me is the mag-latch... And of course, the much lower price.

On the other hand, the 15" display is important to me, which is why I'll be going for the MBP. If there was a 15" MB, I'd probably buy that, but I doubt Apple will ever make one as it will cannibalize MBP sales. (It's not actually the larger display I want so badly, but higher resolution - 1280x800 is rather constraining for an only computer.)

Different things are important to different people. If you simply must have a Firewire 800 port, or a larger display, or a non-glossy display, or multi-touch (is there anyone who absolutely needs multi-touch?), or speed/power is really important for your work, the MBP is for you. If you need the smallest, lightest current 'full-featured' Apple notebook, or you are on a tight budget, obviously the MB is the choice. For most of us - people like me - either one will do the job well enough. Only you know which one will work better for you...

Its not worth it at all.

As he said it's the speed he's interested in, I guess the answer is no ;) .

Anyway, the two things that are genuinely different are the processor and the VRAM. The HD can be upgraded to 250GB on the lower-end model for a fraction of the price difference.

I bought an MBP at the Mexican Apple Store Online a few minutes after they were posted very early in the morning. 2.4 GHz, 250 GB HDD, 2 GB memory, glossy widescreen... I'm really excited... It should arrive in 7-10 days  really long wait, but anyway...

Aaaand, I bought a 1999 iBook with 10 GB HDD, 288 MB memory, 300 MHz, 800x600 display for just $120!! I bought it cause when I was young I wanted to buy it and didn't have the money. Now I own a PC (which will be replaced soon) and decided to give myself a little gift to remember that time in which Apple was rising from hell and deciding to make to most beautiful computers in the world. And the iBook incredibly still works pretty well. Not that I plan on actually using it, but it's a great way to fill some space on my desk.

Can't wait to have my new MBP!

I would have to agree...if speed is your main concern you are better off with the low-end model (that isn't really so low end) and just upgrade to the larger hard drive....the extra VRAM is only helpful if you truly need it for your work/hobbies or whatever...its completely unnecessary to have if you wont do anything graphics-wise

I have a new MBP now !

All the waiting with my beloved MR buddies ends at this moment. I have the new MBP with me now and am absolutely thrilled.
Cheers !!

P.S: I bought a MB 2 weeks back as well !!
Yohooooo !!

I am talking about the student membership, which is $99.

But the student membership doesn't include a hardware discount, does it?

My understanding was that a student member gets the normal student discount off of any hardware purchase, and gets the updates for developers, but doesn't get the full ADC membership discount. That is reserved for full members only and only one discount in a one year membership period.

It includes one discount. (Not one per year, one ever.)

See here.

I figure I'll keep this MBP for two to three years (unlike my 12" PB and 13" MB, each kept for just under a year), which means I should have graduated by the time I replace it. So this should be my one chance to take advantage of this loophole...!

I almost feel like I should buy a fancier MBP just to get a bigger discount, but as it is I will be spending more than I really should ;) ...

NEW Macbook Pro

I just finished ordering my 15" Macbook Pro w 2.6 and the 200GB 7200 rpm should be here Mar 3-6 just gotta sit and wait now :)

haha, i find it funny how now that its actually out, you guys are complaining about how its not enough of an upgrade..

i find it hard to believe that they can't get multitouch to work on older models when you can already do gestures with abracadabra... oh well

guys let me get this straight, i can sign up for the student membership for $99 and get a new MBP which is regularly $2499 for $1999. Roughly how long do you guys think it will take to get verified, and will they let me use the discount immediately?

I second that question. I really wish there were some way to see a listing of these discounts with my own eyes. I'd hate to pay the $99 and then find out that the discounts vary.

I guess you need some expert opinion buddy. So it goes like this, buy the student ADC today. Have ur ID's and course list ready 4 tomorrow and send the fax to them ASAP tomorrow, call the guy and tell him u sent the fax ( if you dont remind them they might not do it for days - it happened with me ) , it gets verified by the evening and you buy the MBP in the night @ ADC hw store and get it ...... it depends on what u order .............so get goin buddy :D

I'm running a 30" Dell... off of my PB G4... Had I purchased the 30" ACD, I'd be able to do the same.

These are the first MacBook Pros to support a 30" ACD (at least according to Apple) and there has never been a Powerbook that supported a 30" ACD (again this is according to Apple).

I for one would have bought one if it was so.

What resolution to you run your 30" Dell at? 2560x1600, which is the max resolution for an 30" ACD.

thanks for clarifying everything

Well, this works out perfect for me.
I bought my MBP 2.4 Santa Rosa back in November, the week after Leopard came out.
While this upgrade is pretty good, I, for one don't suffer from buyer's remorse.
Heck, it was back in November, and I was coming from a 600MHZ G3 for crying out loud. Far as I'm concerned, this thing is like lightning.

Anyway, I figure to get a good three years out of this machine, and then upgrade when I can no longer run FCP, and hopefully there will be even more interesting, geeked-out things to buy then.

I guess I don't see the need to knock on this upgrade because I no longer have the up-to-the-exact-nanosecond revision.

Kudos to those who waited, but I still think mine screams like a demon.
