I don't know if this has been posted in this thread already...but the screens in the 12" PowerBook are now proper TFT instead of TFT XGA!!!
:D

AppleMatt

What's the difference? I thought the XGA, UXGA, WXGA, WUXGA, etc. referred to the screen resolution. :confused:

Yes Yes

I know American People cant believe it ...

But PowerBooks will come in September not on Seybold (USA) they will come in Paris on Macworld Expo.

So dont feel bad its just europe.
:D

"Its a joke"

It's funny but I think it is the 12" iBook that got the worst upgrade. Just a little faster and a better bus speed. That's it. I am just wondering about all those people saying that the 12" iBook is such a great buy now. It always was, I think it has gotten a little worse now that they upped the 12" pb. Or am I missing sth.?

That, and a damn good price cut.

Thats what a few of the naysayers are missing. These machines may be 'neh' speed bumps, BUT they're significant price cuts. I like both. Speed Bumps + Price Cuts = Me Happy.

And y'know, its not like a 1.6 G5 is significantly faster than the 1.4 G4, so I'm happy. Going to replace my broken 1ghz Tibook with the 1.5 15".That tide me over till 3ghz G5 PBs pop out :)

Well, I like updates and all... but this one seems a bit lame. I would of really liked to see the 12'' get FW800 and a backlit keyboard. An ATI video card would of been nice as well. I don't think th 1.0ghz --> 1.33 ghz will bring in hords of sales, but who knows. It certainly is better than nothing.

I like the iBook updates alot.

For everyone who waited, do you feel it was worth the wait? To me the .25ghz bump would of been meaningless.

You have a point, but the 12" PowerBook was probably the least great buy before this update. Now it's more even, methinks. :)

Yup, you're right they were pretty bad before(12" pbs) but they are still not great. As far as I am concerned I am even considering a 15" because of that. :(

Good news

I think I'll be getting the 1.5 GHz G4 15 inch model with the upgraded video ram.

Even if Apple comes out with a PowerBook G5, it probably won't be until MWSF, and it will probably only be 30% faster. In the mean time, I'd have a mature platform (no bugs) at a good price.

You weren't referring to me when you mentioned naysayers right? Because that was a plain observation.
Besides... you and the Empire dudes :D are the only ones that got those significant price cuts. Not that I am not happy for you... :p

Okay, the only revision that I know of on the 12" iBook is the 200MHz speed bump. In December, I bought an 800MHz 12" iBook G4. Should I have waited? Probably not. I'm quite happy with this, I think the speed is enough for what I do, and I really needed a new machine at that point, considering I had just gotten my writing post for TheMacMind.com. That's when the serious work started coming in.

Also, I think it's kind of cool from a numbers standpoint that the 14" iBook and 12" PB are only 133 MHz apart.

For the most part, I agree. It's only 16.67% faster than the previous top of the line... but they come with a great graphics chip, aren't that expensive, and offer a mature product line. For someone who has a recent PowerBook, I wouldn't see these as enticing. For someone who does not have a laptop, or for someone with an older laptop, I think they're a good match.

Granted, I wanted the G5... but I don't think it'd be wise to buy the G5 laptop until the 2nd generation anyway (1 year from now?)

12inch PBs are great!

Why is that? I positively love my Rev. B. Rev. Cs will be even better!

To answer other posts regarding the missing FW800 port. Since FW800 is not backwards compatible with FW400, they would have to fit another port into the small case of the 12". I'm not sure if this is possible.

Yes, the 12 inch iBook was always a great buy. That's why I was going to purchase it before I even knew about the upgrade! And how can any upgrade be "worst" when it doesn't change the price at all, but yet, gives a significant noticeable performance boost? The 1 Ghz is about 20-25% (real use estimate) faster than the 800 MHz! Extra L2 Cache will def help out things as well (the bus speed hasn't changed though, it's still 133 MHz). The option for 1.25 GB of memory is nice too. All in all, a standard, but very appreciated update to an already sweet package. There is NO notebook in the Wintel world that can match for the price!

Yeah. That's why I bought the iBook. It is a great deal and it still is.
But if you compare things you will always have a best and a worst case, product, etc. That does not mean that it is a bad deal, product, etc. There is a difference. Other than that I agree with you.

Easy way for a Mac site to add value: put the old and new specs side-by-side. ;)

Does anyone do it?

I'll tell you why. It is a great upgrade I agree with you on that one. BUT compared to the 15" and 17" it is still lacking massively specwise although not as bad as it used to(better RAM, faster HD option) but I think there's still a lot of stuff that the 15" has going for it compared to the 12".
All in all an awsome update to the 12", but not enough I think.
But that's just my $0.02

We can only hope for a G5 iMac next week....

let this be true and i will buy it the second it is announced - i am still on an 800mhz 15" and it has been great, never let me down, but i am LUSTING for a new i-mac

my 12" i sold last week on ebay (i knew there were new ones coming, but I was thinking more late June than 7 days away) vs. the new ones

1ghz G4 --> 1.33ghz G4
32mb Graphics Card -> 64mb Graphics card
80 gig 4200rpm drive --> 80 gig 5400rpm drive
airport extreme ready --> airport extreme built in

I think that's it. Unless the superdrive is faster. I still don't know if i should get this or wait even longer. I might just let my summer classes decide that for me. If there's a lot of notes, I'll get one. We have an apple store here so I can just walk in and buy.

Clearcoat available?

Wonderful news...Now, does anyone know that if a protective clearcoat is available for the damage-prone aluminium shell?
I know wouldn't want mine to be all "rusty looking" only after a few months worth of usage! Perhaps some of the stuff that is used on cars can also be applied to the current-line of Apple notebooks. Or has Apple actually refined the manufacturing process so that this does not occur any longer? :eek:
HA! When pigs fly!

(((sigh))) They just don't make 'em like they used to, ala my 2000 Pismo which looks stellar after all of these years! :p

At any rate, good update, I'll consider it.

The drive speed and ram speed will make a big difference. The faster bus speed of the 1.33 GHz will help too. The .33 GHz clock speed difference will make a minor difference. The video memory will help with 3D accelerated games.

Would the drive speed, ram speed, .33hz G4 difference and 64mb video card MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE?

I can see your point but don't forget that the low-end 15" is $400 more than the 12" Combo, between the 17" and the 12" SD, there's a $1000 difference. So I guess you get what you pay for :)
