cant wait

last night I ordered the 1.5 with 128vram the 5400 drive and the combo drive and backlit keys. I had second thoughts and nearly canceled this morning but the apple store gave me 100 dollars off to keep me from going somewhere like cdw that doesnt charge sales taxes, Im so excited Im upgrading to this new powerbook from a 350mhz g3 slot loading Imac with 8 mb of vram and os X.1. Its gonna be a HUGE difference Ill finally be able to do so much more just having the OS up to date is gonna be a huge plus I was so tired of not being able to use new software just because it required osX.2, I feel like a kid waiting for Santa Claus its suppose to ship by 27 should be here just before my birthday on may 2nd.

I wonder why the slot-loading iMac can't use 10.2.x. I run 10.2.6 on my G3 Wallstreet (300MHz), with very few problems, though it can be very slow at times.

512mb RAM for G3 iBook is fine

I'm ordering a 12" ibook to replace my 12" pbook (867mhz/256mbram) after dropping it and cracking the screen. My question is about ram, and how much of it I should get. I use my computer mostly for the web, email, word, etc. I was planning on getting 512, but would I notice a difference if i went for 768? Basically what I am asking, for my needs, should I shell out extra $$ for an extra 256 mb ram, or will 512 suffice?

THanks!
Adding 512 mb should do you just fine, install yourself, it's easy - under the keyboard.
Compare buying after market vs.
having it installed as a BTO,
probably cheaper to go low RAM purchase, then add 512 later yourself.

I didnt have osX.2 installed on my Imac because I had planned on buying a new mac in the near future, the near future turned into 2 years, and I just didnt want to shell out the extra cash

CDW 512 Free RAM offer

I noticed CDW and Macmall offer 512 extra RAM free on PBs (small fee for install) Anyone know how they configure the slots on a 15" 1.5 Ghz PB when they upgrade the RAM? 'Cause that's saving $400 over the Apple price using two 512s plus no tax! The only drawback is you can't upgrade the RPM on the HD to 5200 and the video RAM to 128....unless anyone knows a dealer that can do that and also match CDW the type deal????
Thanks!

What about the iMac ???

What is happening with the iMac ??

just ordered BTO from MacWarehouse

You CAN BTO through some resellers. I just ordered a machine ten minutes ago through MacWarehouse that is BTO. It is a 17" with the 128 video upgrade and 5400 rpm drive upgrade. Same price as Apple, less $5 (an additional $100 for the two BTO options). Shipping included. I didn't take the RAM as it is one slot 512MB in the 17" and I already have a 1GB SO DIMM to add. Could take the RAM for $35 but it is a mail-in rebate and too much hassle to re-sell for $100.

So, I was writing to say I just bought two machines from the new offerings! The 17" PB above and a 1GHZ 12" iBook (60 gig BTO, Airport card) for my wife. I'm not a switcher, this is my upteenth mac - moving up right now from a 1GHZ Ti-Book with 1xSD and an older 512MHZ 12" iBook.

These will do well for at least a year - hopfully past when the G5 PB is announced and actually shipping in quantity.

to add to that

Forgot to mention - the 17" has a ship date from MacWarehouse w/BTO of May 4th - two weeks. They did make it sound like BTO was slow to go through them but they don't have any of the 1.5GHZ 17" in stock so I don't think a normal order through them would be much slower. I have heard that Apple has a two-week delay anyway for that model through the store, not sure if true (my shopping cart there showed the 3-5 days, so maybe not). For me the two weeks will be worth the taxless wait.

The iBook I ordered through the apple store as I promised my wife a machine sooner and the tax is less painful on the $1200 machine ($98).

Ordered all RAM 3rd party, no tax and much cheaper.

Hey thats great, 17 is early May. I feared it might be late May and then with WWDC not long after that I was going to be even more tempted to delay...

What is happening with the iMac ??

My guess: iMac G5 at WWDC

Reasons: (1) The iMac, spec and price wise, is way out of whack with the rest of the lineup. I am guessing that this wasn't planned on Apple's part. So, what would cause an unplanned delay on Apple's part except for waiting on 90nm G5s? Nothing that I can think of. (2) I don't think you will wake up one morning and find a iMac G5 on Apple's website... it almost most definately would be introduced at a Steve-note. (3) WWDC is the next Steve-note and that should give IBM enough time to ramp up production for the XServe, the new PowerMacs and the iMac G5.

The only thing that has me questioning this timeline is that IBM is supposedly getting a number of sub-2.0GHz G5s out of the 90nm process. If Apple is ready to go on the iMac G5, except for taking delivery of the processors, why couldn't Apple drop in these sub-2.0GHz G5s at 1.4GHz-1.6GHz right now?

Which leads to an alternative hypothesis... speed-bumped iMacs in the not too distant future. I can't imagine any significant demand for them with the new eMacs and iBooks. Use the new G4s at 1.25GHz/1.50GHz, up the graphics card, use the new 8X SuperDrive and cut the price $100, $200, $300 for the 15", 17" and 20"?

No, I thing a new form factor iMac G 5, for the 20th Anniversary of the Mac is a pretty likely outcome. WWDC seems appropriate.

First I hope that we don't have to wait till June for any iMac updates.

Second I hope that the nay sayers are wrong that the iMac price point will be gone.

I was in the Soho store yesterday and they didn't have new PBs yet
although someone earlier claims to have got one already. They had the iBooks.

Really? That's where I picked mine up, although they had none of the new models on display and no notice anywhere of updates, which was kinda strange. Apparently they're also selling the old 12" 1ghz powerbooks for $1399... or at least they were as of 2:30 on Monday.

just ordered mine.

My BTO (5400RPM drive) is still "Open" ordered around 8AM PST. Dang.

Thanks a bunch for the specs; what else can you tell us á la gaming? have you tried Halo, or MOHAA, perhaps? Other thoughts; power management and DFS (power scaling) and how it affects usage/battery? Max battery times? Thanks!

For RAM, I ordered this:
http://store.yahoo.com/memx/m8995ga1.html

I have no problems with the last three orders (all Samsung) from them. I also confirmed with them that this would work with the 12" 1.33GHz.

i've been waiting and waiting to upgrade my still-quite-useful-but-increasingly-unstable pismo, and i've had my eye on the 12" powerbook for a while.. so with these updates i finally decided to head down to the soho apple store and pick up the new 12". so far i have to say it's pretty incredible, though i'm sure part of that is in comparison to my old pismo! i got the stock model -- 256mb ram (now i have to save up money to increase that), 64mb video card, etc etc. Overall impressions so far are very positive -- I use it my laptop for live audio and the applications I've loaded so far are a ton more responsive and usable on this 'book.

How is the screen? Is it bright or kind of dull, especially compared to the 15"&17"?

Is the heat annoying

Also, does anyone know if it is bad for your wrist or even your veins to be constantly against a heat source like that? Sounds stupid... but you never know.

it's Mac, not MAC. an MAC is a media access controller.
If you like nitpicking, MAC also means Message Authentication Code in the field of cryptography, Military Airlift Command according to The American
Heritage ® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition ... and Naval Training Systems Command (NTSC) can tell us this about the MAC abbreviation:
MAC maintenance allocation chart
MAC maintenance action code
MAC mean aerodynamic center
MAC military airlift command
MAC months after contract
Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary says:
MAC**membrane attack complex; minimal alveolar concentration; Mycobacterium avium complex
Mac**abbreviation for L. macerare, macerate.

Thanks for the good wishes. It has a happy ending.

They (Apple rep at David Jones) rang me today (before I even rang them) and simply said they would credit the full amount and then let me order what I wanted from the new range. So I went in there this afternoon and did that. To help them out, and say thanks, I told them I would still spend the same $ amount as my original order so I used the leftover credit for other items.

I don't know who decided to do this (DJs or Apple) but I am grateful. It was the right thing to do.

(there's a few more details to it all - but this is the gist of it)

devman, that's excellent news. I think your gesture is also a good one...everybody should come out at the end happy.
