Mini-DVI to Video adaptor

Just to clarify; yes, the Apple UK store do sell the "Mini-DVI to Video adaptor". Thanks to those who pointed it out.

It's a really horrible piece of web design. The cable appears if you select "Apple Products" -> "Apple Accessories", but not if you select "Accessories" -> "Cables and hubs". It also doesn't appear in a search of the site.

I'm not the only one confused by this. I've now been told be three different people on Apple telephone support that the UK store doesn't sell this item.

My first 12" PB Superdrive!

I've been waiting to purchase a portable DVD-burner laptop since they introduced the last PB refresh in October. Since then, the Canadian pricing dropped nearly $800 by my estimate between the old and newer 12" PB Superdrive.

The new 12" PB is firstly $150 cheaper, but now comes with a 20GB larger HD, twice the video memory and AE built-in ($150 extra). Apple wisely left gigabit ethernet FW 800 and the backlit keyboards for the higher end models, as if you wanted them, you'd have to pay alot more, but those features I dont really need in a laptop, except for the backlit KB.

The most important things for me in getting a portable was the ability to use my PB as a second DVD burning unit, something large enough to showcase DVD projects for clients, and thirdly, to surf the net wirelessly. The PB more than filled those needs. Woohoo.

New PB 15 Speakers

Like so many others I ordered a 1.5, 128 VRAM, faster HD, etc., etc. within minutes of the announcement. But then, looking at the tech specs, I noticed the 15" has a center mid-range speaker like the 12". Is this new to this rev? I don't remember the rev A having this speaker. Anyone know?

Thanks

I have the specs for the old PBs in front of me and they also had the midrange speaker.

Student developer pricing vs. Educational pricing in Canada

Does anyone have any experience with the student developer hardware discount in Canada? Are the student developer prices much less than educational prices? Are custom options (ie. 1 x 512 sodimm, 5400 rpm) also discounted? I've also heard rumors about iPod also being cheaper if shipped in the same order as a PB.

Annoying question

I promise this will annoy some of you!

I'm a long-time Windoze user who is hankering to switch. The new PBs look great, but I do some heavy-processing Java AI apps, and I really want a G5 cpu. But I'm tired of the tower form factor, I want something smaller.

The other thing I'm thinking is that if I buy a G4-based laptop now, how long will it be before OSX has 64bit-only features, and my laptop is a doorstop? Seems like the G4 is a bit of a dead end now.

So, to the best of everybody's suspicion  , when will there be an iMac G5 (or equivalent). I could live with getting an iMac this spring, if the G5 laptops will be waiting until fall.

Thanks!

The only thing annoying about your post is that it reflects what many of us are thinking and waiting for.
I believe you have a very good grasp of the Big MacPicture.
Although Apple would like to have mastered the technology to put a G5 in a PowerBook YESTERDAY, there is no telling how many tomorrows will pass before their ardent efforts come to fruition.
I personally believe we will see a G5 in an iMac before a PB or iBook, long before.
I do not foresee Apple providing us with "64-bit ONLY" software before 2007, if then. The road to a problem free G5 laptop is likely to be an arduous journey fraught with peril for early adopters.
The true benefit of the current line of PowerBooks is the substantial experience factor Apple has in producing a solid G4 laptop without those nasty little problems that seem to plague any new product.

The Current G4 PB is an excellent product and a good buy. I'm expecting to get more that 36 to 40 months out of mine, after which I would probably have depreciated it out and be looking for another upgrade. Hopefully, the timing will be about perfect. Rather than be an early G5 adopter at primium prices, I always prefer to let others battle the initial slings and arrows. Whenever I buy a Mac, I want the model to have a solid foundation with all the bugs worked out...which is exactly where the current G4 PB lineup is right NOW!

I think you are right in your overall view and concerns, but don't you see the benefit of where we are today? Let's let tomorrow take care of itself. The question is, with what you already have for a PB, is it time for you to move up to something significantly better. Or, are you comfortable with your current G4 PB and willing to hold onto it for the next year or so?

Couldn't agree more; my own Apple equipment depreciation schedule follows yours quite closely -- whether it's a second- or last-generation product, most of the early kinks have worked themselves out, and I have stuff that hums. This is the way everyone should think about products, cars, depreciable goods or what-have-you. In the end, if it makes you happy, makes you money, or otherwise, then it has fulfilled its value (hopefully not at the expense of your life, personality, or relationships; it is, after all, just a computer).

interesting...

...indeed to follow all recent discussions on the eve of powerbook upgrades. located in austria/european community I do follow macs quite a long time and check out especially this excellent site on a regular basis. as a newcomer I just wanna state, that according to my and others experience apple is a great company with outstanding products (design, quality...) especially compared to the windows computer world, which I suppose is responsible for my first approx. 30 to 40 hairs to turn grey :) . for me the utmost out of the speed issue and pricing (which finally was adjusted downwards in germany and austria) is not the dominant question, although I also would have liked to see a GV PB released or at least announced monday......that leads me to the point: I am on the way to become a switcher and will order my first powerbook (15 or 17") within this or the upcoming week. hope lots of men and women will follow the path to the best solution out there in these days. (just wanted to let you know) ;)

Need some ans to PB 12" Qs....

Hello to all creatures that swarm this forum! :)

Need some help with answers to the following:

1. Is it worth buying the AppleCare for PB? ....the cost is bit too steep!

2. Is there a limitation to buying PB under a student discount? ...like if one buys MS Office for Mac, for student, one has to pay separately for updates ...while if one were to buy at regular price, the updates come free.

3. Is there a real noticeable diff if 5400 rpm drive is used? ...is this performance noticeable to a normal user?

4. If one has to use iLife (especially iDVD, iMovie etc) ...is 512 RAM good enough? ...getting 1 gig is demanding on finances!

Thanx!

Good points, and 2007 is comfortably far enough away.

PB15SuperDrive arrived

I was quite surprised when FedEx rang this morning to deliver the PowerBook (15" SuperDrive, 1.5GHz) I ordered on Monday, which I wasn't expecting for another day or two (it was in Anchorage, Alaska when I last checked last night). Looks beautiful, and it's mostly set up.

Look at AppleCare as insurance. Would you drive a new care around with insurance? You may never need it, but the costs out weight your personal expense.

In looking at the G3 iBook logic board issue, they made no difference between retail and any discounts.

HDD speed i will leave towards the geeks among us. I am happy with the speed of my PB 12" 1ghz 40gb HDD.

With RAM, buy the most that you can afford at the time. I know that I am looking to go to 1.2gb on my PB 12". Only because the 256mb upgrade was "free" with a Staple coupon. They did not at the time offer a 1gb memory module, otherwise I would have been happy to pay the difference.

Thanks to those who made a positive response.

Yeah ok, how about asking about powermacs on the ibook/powerbook thread. That will generate a response. How about checking for a IMAC thread. Wouldnt that make more sense?

Was it BTO or just regular?

Longevity!

Hey - I just installed Jaguar on an Orange Clamshell iBook - talk about longevity! my son messes around on it happily. I'm going for a fully loaded 15" PB having gotten 30 months of great use out of a 12" G3 iBook. By the time the G5 PBs have "matured" in 30 months or so my G4 will have served me well, my son will be 12 and be the proud owner of 3 laptops!

I thought the 17s had been delayed until May???

I thought so as well. However, it still shows the 4/27 date. It has not shipped yet. However, I will post when it does.

CDW, Macmall and others offer free 512 RAM upgrades plus no tax if out of State, that's getting on for $600 in savings! The only catch is you pay for the RAM and have to send in for a rebate. Big Deal!!

Playing the new-mac countdown game

I bought a BTO (better video, better HD) 17" at 6:06 a.m. Monday. I think it said 3-5 business days when I ordered. Since then, my order's been open, estimated to ship on or before 4/26. At the same time, I ordered a printer, which shipped out right away and is apparently on the Fedex truck for delivery today.

I also saw the MacNN report about 17" models being available in May rather than right away, and I'm not sure what to make of it. They don't provide a source for that bit of info.

I'll post again when it ships, in case that helps any of you gauge how long it'll take your new babies to arrive.

Oh, and one other thing. I can say with some confidence that refreshing the "order status" page on the Apple Store's website doesn't make the computer ship any faster. I've been trying for three days now.

Ok, thanks. I am sure though that some VP or something said May, and I want to know what end of May because if its May 30th or some such, then that's middle of June for OZ which may make me wait it out a bit longer to see what happens...

They can make 64M a BTO for people on a budget, but I suspect the majority of people will want the 128, and now they are forced to BTO and wait longer.

I called my local apple store today to confirm the 15" superdrive was in stock (it wasn't) but in the course of the call found out the vid ram is not a store-installable upgrade. so if i want it i'l'l have to order it from the online store. bummer, waited 3 yrs was finally ready to do it.

terry

ps: i haven't seen an authoritative answer here: is the added vid ram useful ONLY for gamers (I'm not) or will it help with photoshop, video editing, etc? thanks. TD
