$200 for a DVD-R upgrade to an iBook!
What's it made of - mini iPod's? You can get a DVD writer for less than half that cost and that's without the bulk discount Apple get. Apple's memory prices are bad enough, but that's just a joke.
My credit card is sliding back into my pocket...
Mokona said:Seems like some people have run Xbench on their new 12" Pbooks, check it out.
Sure you can get a dvd writer elsewhere but its going to be external. You are paying for having it built in. Thats why it costs so much. The cheap ass external DVD writers are as big as a truck.
MikeH said:Internal writers are significantly cheaper than external writers - no power supply, case or Firewire cable to pay for. Apple also take back the combo drive that was originally installed, worth about $40 perhaps, so you are actually paying $240 for the DVD-R drive. And lastly fitting an optical drive would take an Apple tech about three minutes. Also, keep in mind this is a point of purchase modification, not a returned to store upgrade.
Apple charge way to much for these BTO upgrades (memory is WAY overpriced too) - but as there's nowhere else to go I guess Apple can keep screwing us for every penny.
Don't get me wrong, I love Apple products and I do beleive they are worth more than PC's. But it pisses me off that they over charge for bulk generic components like optical drives and memory.
Tomaz said:I ordered mine (15", 180MB VR, 1GB RAM, 5400rpm) Monday 30min after they came out from a Swiss store (not "the Apple store"). They say they don't know really when it'll ship, but probably Mid May ???!!!!!!!!
Ok, I saved a lot cause they had an awesome memory deal (upgrade to 1GB for free), but I have to wait 3-4 more weeks....that's probably gonna kill me! It's a shame, I was so close to having a Mac![]()
