It's a bit late in the day to add to this thread I know, but I just wanted to say:

$200 for a DVD-R upgrade to an iBook!

What's it made of - mini iPod's? You can get a DVD writer for less than half that cost and that's without the bulk discount Apple get. Apple's memory prices are bad enough, but that's just a joke.

My credit card is sliding back into my pocket...

It's on the way!

I ordered my 15" pb 1.5 ghz with superdrive, one 1 GB RAM, 128 VRAM, 5400 RPM drive on Monday, first thing in the AM, and...

It's on its way!
:D

Uncle FedEx claims delivery by Monday!
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

grmbl...

Okay, I know why my order hasn't shipped yet...

I was foolish enough as to order a side ipod with..

custom engraving

This is what keeps my baby from reaching its new beloved home. Some teeny weeny marks in a pile of metal&silicium...

Sure you can get a dvd writer elsewhere but its going to be external. You are paying for having it built in. Thats why it costs so much. The cheap ass external DVD writers are as big as a truck.

Internal writers are significantly cheaper than external writers - no power supply, case or Firewire cable to pay for. Apple also take back the combo drive that was originally installed, worth about $40 perhaps, so you are actually paying $240 for the DVD-R drive. And lastly fitting an optical drive would take an Apple tech about three minutes. Also, keep in mind this is a point of purchase modification, not a returned to store upgrade.

Apple charge way to much for these BTO upgrades (memory is WAY overpriced too) - but as there's nowhere else to go I guess Apple can keep screwing us for every penny.

Don't get me wrong, I love Apple products and I do beleive they are worth more than PC's. But it pisses me off that they over charge for bulk generic components like optical drives and memory.

You may be right with the prices for RAM and superdrive upgrades, on the other hand, the quicker HD and the Vram extension both cost just $50, which I think is a fair price!
Of course that doesn't really help you with your problem...

Wich Superdrive is it?

Has anyone of you (the people who have gotten the new 12" yet) checked exactly which superdrive is in there?

Curious minds need to know...

I ordered mine (15", 180MB VR, 1GB RAM, 5400rpm) Monday 30min after they came out from a Swiss store (not "the Apple store"). They say they don't know really when it'll ship, but probably Mid May ???!!!!!!!!
Ok, I saved a lot cause they had an awesome memory deal (upgrade to 1GB for free), but I have to wait 3-4 more weeks....that's probably gonna kill me! It's a shame, I was so close to having a Mac ;)

Just got a shipping estimate on my PB - 7 weeks !!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone in this forum ordered a BTO PB in Europe? What are youur shipping estimates??

I can't believe I have to wait for 7 more weeks!! :(

woo! My 15" 1.5 512mb 80gig@5400 128 vid shipped yesterday and is expected on Monday. I'm so excited!

Please people, if you write about shipping of your new PB, please mention where you're from, so we can also judge how fast Apple is shipping outside the US.

Thanks a lot

Tomaz, unfortunately, new Macs take longer to arrive in Europe or at least in Switzerland. I decided to buy a Mac over last Christmas. On Dec. 27 I went to an official Mac reseller in Zurich and ordered a 933 MHz iBook. I was told I should get it in early Jan. As Jan progressed, the shipping dated was pushed back further and further. By the end of Jan, they still couldn't give me a delivery date. In fact, some people who had ordered theirs when it was announced in late Oct were still waiting too (in late Jan, mind you!). Therefore I cancelled my order and bought a 12" PB that they had in stock. (I desperately needed a new laptop). I also remember that the first wave of the then current line up reached Zurich in mid Jan although those PBs were announced in Sept 03!

Expect to wait for your PB for some time. I'm sorry to break it to you but I think you shouldn't get false hope. But of course, I hope you get your shiny new PB soon.

Edit: The iBook I ordered was not BTO! Actually, I asked them about BTO, because I wanted a bigger HD, but I was told that I would have to wait even longer!

Hey, as soon as you get it, would you run benchmarks through xbench? I am most curious... It's the same setup I'm interested in... also... could you check what the model number is on your superdrive...please...

know I'm asking a lot, but I'm so dang curious...

17 inch powerbooks shipping next?

Now that the 15s are shipping it should mean that Apple is concentrating on the 17s. I ordered a BTO 17inch powerbook the early morning of the 20th. It says it should ship on or before 4/27. IT BETTER! :D

Backlit keyboard...worth the $$$?

Hi folks, this my first post. I've been lurking here doing some recon on a soon to be Powerbook purchase.

I haven't owned a portable since the mid 90's when I had a PB 165 that served me well for 3 years of "Compuserve" while I was on the road as a touring musician/tech.

It's come time to jump back in and I've got a question regarding the back lit keyboard on the 15" PB.
How does it work for you folks that own it? If you didn't have this feature would it be a hinderance to your work flow? I may use it on stage at some point but I see there are bus powered lites that can be used that work similar to a reading lamp.
Also, I've got dvd burners in the studio mac's, and dont really see the need to have a dvd burner (superdrive ) on board. I have to carry an external FW drive to do audio edit's anyway so being able to back up to dvd dosent seem that necessary. Can some one make a case for it...perhaps something I'm missing?
thanks all.

The funny things is that on the official Swiss Apple page, it says "shipping in 3-5 days". I wonder if that's true or if they just write that so that people order (I guess less people order if they write "shipping in 6-8 weeks"....)
