I placed my order on 22nd Apr, at 9:41am PST. Ship date states on or before 29th Apr...let's see how long they take... :D

It's nice to have friends working at Apple - you get a good deal! :p

Finally...I can give my sis my IBM T40 and attain computing nirvana.

Shipping When?

I ordered my BTO 15" 11:30 PST from Seattle WA and no ship yet. Some of you back east must be benefiting from time difference? Mine still shows "open" for shipment on or before 4/26/04.

Don't feel too bad, mine has been sitting at the FedEx location for the past day. Hopefully it is just there systems being wrong, and I will get my PB tomorrow. Man, I have to stop dreaming...

Every time I track through FedEx it seems like it sits in one place forever. I was once told it's because they only scan and update as the package enters a different facility. Not sure if it's true, but it helps thinking my PB is somewhere over the Pacific rather than stuck in a Shanghai warehouse!

They usually scan when it leaves a facility too, but I have noticed that on international shipments the tracking seems to be weird. I be tomorrow night it will end up already in your town or nearby fedex facility

delivery time...

Ordered 15" BTO on Mon. am and FedEx tracking states "delivery before 10:30 am Monday 4/26. This is a very rare occasion that I'm actually looking forward to Monday. ;)

and the third time i called...

I called again this morning and was told the apple store DID have 15" SD PB in stock after all, and had had them the previous day, i was just given incorrect info. So i went to the store today, tried to negotiate a purchase, i really do want to buy from the store when i can. My goal: the 15" super drive model with 512 MB ram stick.

but the best i could do was $225 more than i could order thje same machine for from a reseller (175 of the diff was sales tax, charged by the apple store, not by the out of state vendor). So i ordered it from the online/catalog reseller. i'll get it tomorrow. the $225 savings (which was after i paid for shipping from the out of town seller) paid for most of a 7200 rpm hitachi drive. and i ordered a 1 GB ram chip, too. It'll cost me less than $100 to get the ddrive installed by an authorized apple service center or whatever they call them. oh, i got a PB bag free, too, with the computer purchase. I plan to buy the $99 pro care at the apple store, and before the year's up i'll get apple care on the 'puter.

Next: a G5 when new models are released. I'll always give the apple store first shot at my money.

SuperDrive vs. ComboDrive

MacRAND said:
YES, resale value. Far fewer people would be interested in buying your PB if it does NOT have a SuperDrive.
Buying a 15" or 17" PowerBook with just a combo is like buying a new Corvette but insisting that Chevrolet put a V6 with automatic transmission in it, instead of a V8 with manual. What a waste.

The 4x is *already* an out-dated DVD burner. By the time reselling one of these PBs will be an issue (1-3 years maybe?), dual layer burning will be all over the place - so the DVD burner will be even more outdated.

Maybe some have the need, but for me it wasn't worth it at all (though I already have a DVD burner, so that factors into it as well).

My 17" BTO shipped

I ordered a 17" BTO (better video, faster HD) at 6:06 a.m. PST Monday--pretty much the moment they became available. I just got the "it's shipping" email at 10:40 p.m. PST today. I've got a tracking number, but Fedex hasn't heard of the package yet. So it's shipping from parts unknown to Seattle. I'm guessing I'll get it Tuesday, but I'll know more once Fedex scans it.

So, invaLPsion and others awaiting your 17-inchers, I'm here to tell you that they're starting to ship.

I just got my "it's shipping" email as well on my 17" with the 5400 rpm drive and the 128 mb vram.

7200 rpm hard drive & Apple warranty...!

Hi Terry -

After reading your post above I called the Apple Store to inquire about your strategy (which I was wishing *I* had thought of too!), & the guy I talked to said that installing the 7200 rpm Hitachi drive *WILL* void Apple's warranty on the Powerbook -- even if it is installed by an Authorized Apple Service Center. I hope he's wrong... did you check this out already?

I am keen to buy a 12"PB here in OZ but i cannot get it shipped to me directly as i have no secure address. I have to wait untill they become available in stores and none of them know when they are going to be getting them in stock! this is so frustrating as i have been waiting for the last month and then i have to wait another two possibly before i get my first mac! grrrr.

You're probably best off ordering the configuration you want through a reseller (especially if your not going stock standard) and then pick it up when it arrives. It think nextbyte and macmall.com.au both deliver pretty cheaply as well...

New 4x DVD mobile SuperDrive already "out-dated"?

I'm surprised to hear that you find the
4x DVD mobile SuperDrive to be "out-dated", Jeff.
I would like to buy something more up-to-date to install in my laptop.
Would you please share with us some URLs where we might review and purchase a faster DVD 2.5" slot loading laser drive burner for our laptops?

Frankly, your speculation that slow burning 2x (or, 1x for laptop versions) DL SuperDrives will migrate to PowerBooks within the next few years runs against conventional wisdom.

Many experts are predicting that DL burning will have limited popularity and DL SuperDrives will be confined to the "studio" in External DVD SuperDrives mostly and are not likely to be installed internally over the next few years, if at all. Of course, professional mastering and duplicating houses will want them immediately.

Indeed, there is considerable opinion that 8.5 GB DVD-R DL won't have time to catch on if the new 25~27 GB (SONY laser version) or50 GB Pioneer version (using an Electron-stream to burn discs instead of a Laser) Blu-ray SuperDrives come out before September 2005.
sony.jpg

Once Blu-ray comes out, DL will likely become irrelevant rather than just obsolete.

I've already replaced the original 2x Pioneer SuperDrive that came in my 2002 era dual G4 PowerMac with a 3.5" 8x Pioneer DVR-A07 DVD/CD±R/RW , having decided that it is probably wise to hold-off purchasing a new Dual-Layer SuperDrive until the (DL) one-sided DVD blanks come down significantly in cost from a whopping $35 each to something far more reasonable - like below $10 each, or $8. Philips is expected to be one of the first to market a Dual-Layer DVD-9 desktop burner for $150 USD in Europe starting May 2004.

Maybe you have a good source for DL Media and a better price that you would be willing to share with the rest of us?

I'm still anxiously anticipating Apple's announcement concerning availability of 8x DVD-R 5-pack media for $19.99 when the new PowerMac 2+GHz duals are released with 8x SuperDrives as standard equipment.

Since Apple has already provided us with a new driver for the DVR-A07 8x SuperDrive in the 10.3.3 update, I've been dying to burn some hot DVDs at 8x. Problem is, Apple will first need to upgrade or "unlock" the 8x burn speed in iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, and it's standard DVD burner in OS X. At least Roxio's Toast 6 is already capable of an 8x burn, and will likely upgrade to 12x (for SONY & LG) and 16x for Pioneer and the rest before the end of Summer.

Only 4x DVD-R (some printable, finally, but only in cakes of 50 minimum) are available in the local Fry's.

If Apple doesn't come through with new 8x blank DVD media soon, then I'll have no choice but to order on-line in bulk. By then, I hope "printable" quality 8x DVD discs will be widely available. :p

unless it is a Customer Installable Part (CIP), any device installed into the computer that is not an apple authorized part by an apple authorized service dealer WILL void the warranty for the length of the product life of that system... this applies to non-apple authorized parts installed by apple authorized service dealers, such as the situation above is describing.

wouldn't it suck if you started getting white spots on your new laptop screen, then sent it in to get replaced, and you couldn't get it done because you installed a 7200 RPM drive? just upgrade to the 5400 RPM and if you really need a 7200 RPM drive, buy an external firewire HD, they're extremley inexpensive now compared to just a year ago...

bottom line, apple's warranty service is comparitivley not extensive considering the premium we pay for hardware... i know i wouldn't do anything to put that warranty in jeopardy.

mxpiazza -- thanks for your input on this... I was wishing I'd ordered a 15" PB from CDW (& then replaced the drive like Terry's doing), 'cause they're offering same-day shipping. But I already ordered my BTO PB on Monday 4/19 from the Apple Store (w/ 128 VRAM & 5400 rpm drive), and am now *im*patiently waiting for shipping to happen "on or before 4/26"... ... ... :(

Well - I'd rather have Applecare than 7200 rpm. -sigh- -

I wish Apple would make Applecare 20% or more cheaper if bought with a new machine. PC friend of mine freaked out today when told him my Applecare was $540 AUD, reduced from $599 ($399 USD) so a 33% markup for software!

Ditto for Microsoft office, it should be OEM option and priced accordingly. $598 ($349 USD) so a 23% markup for software!

Apple's already dear enough.

Hmm from Shanghai. I guess Apple is in the middle of this outsourcing problem we keep hearing about!

Arrived!!!!

BTO 12" 1.33/768RAM/80G

Ordered 0900 4/19
Originally showed "will ship on or before 4/26"
Actually Shipped 4/22 from Taiwan
Then at that time status showed "will arrive 4/27 1030
Actually arrived 4/23 Cincinnati!

Now that's impressive!!! They consistently beat their own estimates. Great job by Apple and Fedex.

That's what my Fedex tracking report says as well. I guess ours is on the same flight. :)

Too bad it had to sit at their facility for 31 hours before it "Left FedEx Ramp".

mine also left at the same time. I bet they have a jumbo jet packed to the wing tips with powerbooks :D

I honestly can say I have never been this excited for anything to ship to me before. The local mac users group is having a lan fest today, if only it would get here today i could kick some ass with my radeon 9700. Otherwise I have a huge web application that I need to write and I'd rather write it on my powerbook.

15" 1.5Ghz/128vram/5400rpm/etc.
(fyi, i ordered mine: 04/19/2004 06:05 AM PST)
