ok...i have been soooo close to ordering a 12" iook 60gb w airport (then buying 512mb ram from elsewhere).

This (additional applecare) would defiantely make the deal for me!! Do you have any information on this? Is it just if you buy in an apple store or does it apply online too? Does it automatically get upgraded or do i have to apply or something.

I (sadly) have been following every post in these threads since sunday, i fell in love with OS X last week after never liking mac's that much.

I have an ibm r32 1.6ghz /512mb/20gb notebook from work at the moment, but am almost definately going to get an ibook for home/uni..

only problem now is i think i have read almost everything on the web about ibooks/apple/ os x since monday...i just cant wait....

also with regards to the wireless routers...i bought a netgear WGR614 last week and it was really bad...every hour or so the wirelss connectiopn would drop out completely and i had to reset the router physcially for it to work.

took it back and got a D link 624+ which has been fantastic, definately can recommend.

one last question...(sorry for the disjointed post), anyone know any good ram providers in Sydney/Australia?

Thanks

http://store.apple.com/Catalog/Australia/Images/salespoliciesedindiv.html - contains the information regarding warranty for higher education students and teachers (point number 9). the 3 year warranty is included , regardless of whether you purchase through apple online, or through an authorised reseller - you dont have to do anything extra, it is included simply because you are a qualifying student/teacher (which you have to prove via id card or some other means). http://store.apple.com.au/buy/reseller/ - search through here to find resellers near you (i would have given a link to one's in sydney, but it doesnt let you link to search results, and given i live in brisbane im no help with knowing any of the stores down that way).

with regards to ram - you can use any compatible SO-DIMM ram. price ram at a local apple reseller - sometimes their prices are reasonable and less than what apple themselves charge, and you will often find if you buy the ram at the same time you order a computer through them that they will include installation and more importantly testing in the price (so you are guaranteed it is working when you get it, - plus it is less hassle to take it back to get fixed if anything goes wrong). also a few links of online stores that sell ram http://www.buymac.com.au/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Palaeographics.woa , http://www.epowermac.com.au/ , http://www.streetwise.com.au/default.php?cPath=25 , http://www.macmall.com.au/mall/customer/home.php . im sure there are many more - try searching for SO-DIMM PC2100 (266MHz) RAM, ideally look for stores that are based in australia - mainly to make returning easier if there is any problems. from what i have seen, 512mb of compatible ram will set you back somewhere in the vicinity of $AU200.

hope that has answered some questions for you :D

Did everybody use standard shipping, or 2 day?

I used 2 day for my new PB...

Regardles of what you selected, they're coming on a 167 MHz bus. They'll eventually show up. :D

Yep, within 30 days (hopefully more like 21) I shall finally be a Mac owner. :)

I am now figuring out all the things I want to do to set it up properly and then back my config up on a dvd-r as a first step.

I want to lock down the firmware security etc. Set up multiple accounts. Import stuff from my pc. Go through the 2 dozen or more mac cds from mags I now have and check out version tracker.

I also have a truck load of cds to put in itunes and then put on an ipod.

Which reminds me. I am thinking about having several accounts on my PB to kepe my desktops focused. Ie an Admin account, a writing account, a games account...an idea at least I am toying with. If I have iTunes stored on one account is it straight forward to allow the other accounts to access the music even when the account with the iTunes is closed?

geeez !

Did you order from the online Apple store or from a local reseller ?

you seem to know everything. But I hope you're wrong !

You hope I am wrong! I hope even more that I am wrong and that it turns up in half the time. How hard can it be to do upgrades that should have been standard anyway for the 17, and airfreight it Singapore to Sydney? Not hard.
But Apple Australia, NextByte and Macmall all say 3 weeks or more...

This sounds like soo much fun......................seriously !!

I am particularly looking forward to using Macstumbler and maybe istumbler when at conferences and exhibitions looking for free access points and seeing whats out there.

Well mine just left the Indianapolis Sort Facility. :)

Too bad I can't go and pick it up when it gets to the local Fedex place tomorrow. :(

  • QuakeIII : Can't wait to see the look on my clanmembers' faces when I show up at our lan and kick their collective ass with a mac :)

  • Do you play any mods? Or just regular Quake 3?

Me and my friends play ReactionQuake and True Combat.

getting closer....

I ordered a 15" 1.5 Ghz, 128VRAM, 5400 drive w/ edu discount first thing Monday AM, live in Buffaolo, NY, and Uncle FedEx says:
>> Apr 24, 2004 4:09 am--Held at Sort Facility--INDIANAPOLIS IN<<

That's a GOOD thing, right?

Going from an iBook 700Mhz G3... think I'll notice a difference?
;)

Seriously, do you folks keep the drive set up as Apple ships them or do you do reformat/partition?

Also, anyone know of any cool, funky, wacky, not-outlandishly-prices bags that work for the 15"? Most of the ones I see are kind of "blah."

Finally, I'm tired: Anyone wanna mow my lawn?
heh

As far as the bags go, have a look a look at the Crumpler ones.

Apple Store UK has them so I'm sure the US does.

Also try http://www.crumpler.co.uk

I have one and can thoroughly recommend them.

As for mowing....p*** off I have Hayfever :)

Check out KisMac

Yeah, that's booked marked as well and looks pretty cool, but I'll work my way up to that given its invasive and not invisible. gps sounds good...i wonder if I can use my raster maps in VPC with a mac gps feed....

Apple Software?

Well, I'm about to place my order!! :D :D

I have a question regarding software... What would others recommend: Office or AppleWorks?

I've been trying to decide, and I'm still not sure which to go for. On one hand, AppleWorks is _much_ cheaper, but on the other hand, I'm familiar with Office (for the PC), and from what I hear, it's a little more robust/feature-filled than AppleWorks.

Can anyone share their own personal experiences/opinions? I'd really appreciate it.

Also, I've been debating whether or not to purchase .Mac. Is it worth the extra money, or should I not bother?

Thanks,
Frank
