As far as antennas, yagis are good but large compared to panel (flat) antennas. Both are directional. While yagis go beyond 10dbi, those are pretty large, at least a couple of feet long. Pretty ominous NSA-looking devices. The panels are around three or four inches diameter, an inch or a bit more thick. Good to travel with. I'd like to see the x-ray guy at the airport checking out a big yagi as it goes through!

Ok, I've only really red about the yagis and other huge antennaes (and the pringles can). I'll check it out... :)

To update my info, the heating is actually better than i thought, i used it to type a paper and do some browsing in the library today from 3:30-6:30 pm and it still has around 30% left on the battery, yep that is a three hour period with about another 1.0-1.3 hours to give, i didnt overtax it and it is my first day. But back to the heat, during this period that i was using it on battery, there was almost no noticable heat, i picked it up at the end and it was mildly warm, not even handwarming warm, when i was using the superdrive the palm rest did not get noticably warm, but time will tell. So far i have been impressed with the battery, performance, heat and display, i have had no problems with wireless networking, have not used bluetooth yet so i cant report there, but i can say that i am loading final cut on my machine tonight and will hopefully get some work done on the go with final cut so i can see if the performance is for real and what the major difference between this pb and the one i had before. I have a question and favor to ask everyone, I had bought with my pb a Brenthaven Professional 15 and liked it except for several problems(too tight on the PB)returned it and bought the Timbuk2 commute bag, i really like it except for the shoulder strap, Does Anyone on this forum own the Brenthaven Profile 15 Bag and use it for the Powerbook Aluminum and can you tell me how you like and it and how it performs, Thanks

QUOTE=Grokgod]I really appreciate the information.

Now are you talking about heat in the Palm rest area? I forgot if the Superdrive is over the palm rest like the Ti, i think not.

I find this very interesting especially since you had the last verion of the ALUbook.

I had a ALu for awhile and it was so bad. I am praying that this rev is going to make me happy with Apple again.

My problems were.
White spots ,Cured! :)
Heat on palm rest, Better :p

Still concerned about.
>Track pad impossible to disable for typing, it ws TOO sensitve and was constantly moving the I-beam all over the place.
>Wobble or warp on body and lid. On a flat table my old Alu would not sit straight, weird. and the lid when closed was strangely wobbley.

How is the video card? FAST? Screen redraws in Photoshop would be great to hear about, like a 100 meg file moved quickly around, is it all slow squares or fast and smooth.

I really am glad that we have such kind members to help us all out with this very important information.
It actually helps Apple sell their units.

What about the CHIP, is it a 7447a?

What do people think about the 1.33 , would a laptop with that chip run cooler? Than a 1.5, if a 7447a runs 20w @ 1.42 then at 1.5 its hotter but at 1.3 is it noticable cooler?

I am dieing to know these things before i can buy another Alu!

TIA

opps another thing, what about during heavy tasks like SHOP work.
How is the fan then, hot and heavy>?[/QUOTE]

"returned it and bought the Timbuk2 commute bag, i really like it except for the shoulder strap"

I have the same bag, and I really like it, but for the shoulder strap. I guess $100 doesn't get you much.

Anybody know where one can buy comfortable shoulder straps for bags?

you'll love it.

It's actually a fine bag:

http://www.timbuk2.com/

your local bike shop (that stocks timbuk2 gear) will have them, too.

Exacting and extremely useful!

Fantastic information, thanks mpopkin!

I am really pleased to hear that the new powerbooks are working well.
Fantastic that you have no noticable heat.

This may very well be the Powerbook for me, it may bethe sweet spot of all powerbooks! Combination of power, battery strength and cool cpu.

Mmm what about the fan noise. and when did it come on in those three hours.
I look forward to your Final cut testing!
Thanks

New Notice in disposition,(and heat) when plugged in and using superdrive(watching a movie) the case gets warm, not hot warm, but a little bit warmer than i have noticed before, i have not heard any fan noise and i am not too sure the powerbooks even have fans or need them, there is a lot of ventilation and the G4 is a cool running chip in general, I will keep everyone update, Has anyone used or has a Brenthaven Profile 15 Bag

Dvd's have always been one of the most demanding powerbooks uses.
On my Ti the fan ALWAYS came on a it was HOT,,heh
The fact that the fan didnt come on the ALUbook for a full DVD movie
really bodes well for the heat factor on these new PowerBooks.

This has got to be the new 7447a, cheese and crackers!

I am getting a GOOD feeling and my wallet is going to comeout of my back pocket pretty soon!

Kudo's to mpopkin for all the updates.
Thanks

Question for you fully mobile folks.
I know that I will be able to use my new PB in a "hotspot" such as Starbucks.

What do I need to be able to use it in other situations where I'd like to be totally mobile, say pulling over on a side street to check the web or email.

I assume that my cellphone carrier makes some kind of phone(bluetooth) tht would allow me to use the cell as a modem. I've heard there are DATA only plans.

I'm in Oceanside Ca. (southern Cal.) and presently use Cingular, but would like to switch to whoever has the best plan to do this mobile thing.

suggestions?

I'll also be looking to up date the phone. I'd love one of these phone/PDA combos as I use a palm all day long. I see the bluetooth phones can do a limited amount of PDA duties, I'll need to be able to enter data into the phone and then sync with ical.

What's the best phone or phone/pda for this? I want to use ical, not my palm desktop when i get the new Powerbook.

I suggest you check out the sonyericsson P900. I have one that I used to replace my dell Axim and my t68i phone. It's quite extraordinary really. Like all SonyEricsson phones it synchs well with iSync and really makes you mobile (even if you have a powerbook) with it's PDA functions.

SonyEricsson also has a phone card that slips into the pcmcia slot on the 15" and 17" pbooks, great if you're planning a data-only type of subscription. Pretty slick with a foldable antenna and stuff, supposed to give good reception.

Took the Plunge!

Well, that's it... I took the plunge last night and purchased my very first Mac. I'm quite excited about it, although I was hesitant all day to hit that purchase page; maybe for fear of ordering much more than a Powerbook! ;)

I picked up the following:

- 12" PowerBook 1.33GHz/SuperDrive
- 256MB
- 80GB Ultra ATA drive @ 5400rpm
- APP
- An additional 512MB RAM (Corsair) from TigerDirect.ca
- Mamba.XS bag from BOOQ
- Mac OS X - The Missing Manual (Panther Edition) by David Pogue
- Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther by Dave Taylor

I elected to NOT get the .Mac service... Yet. I will definitely be ordering it, I'll just wait it out as my CC now has a nice burn mark... I'll need to let it cool first. ;)

By the way, MacRAND, thanks for a great presentation.. that clinched the decision for me to purchase .Mac! :)

I have no idea when anything is going to arrive, but I'm too giddy to worry! :D I assume the RAM will arrive first, as the warehouse is about 15 minutes from here.

As for the PB, the order status now says "Open"...

I wanted to thank everyone for their advice/opinions on my questions. I've decided that I'm going to go with Office X. I'll pick it up at my campus store, and wait for Office 2004 to arrive (Re: free upgrade promo).

Thanks again!

You made the absolute right choice with Office. If not for it, I would probably migrate back (perish the thought). I have .mac and although it's nice to have the safety of offsite storage for files, it is rather slow. Pogue writes a nice manual. I drive a PC by day and a Mac by night, so my evenings are alot more fun. The only thing you forgot to order was a screensaver of Britney Spears in a bikini.

Are you getting the 12" PB ? If you are getting the 15", check this link which has a comparison of the 15/1.33 and 15/1.5 PB versions (especially the last part).. http://www.barefeats.com/pb11.html

Shanghai to Anchorage to Indianapolis to Memphis..... My new PB has done more traveling then I have... My only concern is that I am in MN and it's getting FARTHER away from me. I'm starting to doubt I'll get it by Monday. :(

Yeah, I think it'll be worth it. I'm used to it on the PC side, so migrating to the Mac version shouldn't be too hard.

I've heard nothing but good things about Pogue's book, so naturally it was my first choice. I have very little (almost none) experience with Macs, so getting my feet wet with this book will surely make the transition much smoother.

As for the Britney screensaver... Not sure my girlfriend would appreciate it... LOL... where can I get it? ;)

Spinko,

Sorry, I thought I had mentioned the size in my initial post. I've edited it since... But I ordered the 12"... Do you have any benchmarks similar to the 15"?

Where in MN? I am in Mankato and my ETA is 4/28.

If your ETA says monday by 10:30 I wouldn't sweat it. Fedex has certain paths it takes depending on where you live.
