Have you tried removing the extra RAM installed by the reseller? Surely Apple would have no means to check that YOU opened the PB. The 17" is quite picky with RAM (a lot more than the 12" and the 15") in my own experience.

Or maybe you will wait for a replacement? (I know that I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation to open it...)

Reseller JUST changed RAM and it Works!

Aswitcher...sorry to hear the news mate. Dumb question, but what does it mean for the computer to be DOA? Does the system not boot up or the screen doesnt work? Sorry, Im new to the world of laptops...

It booted and flashed and went to a dead screen. All the books tests turned up nothing better than a multicolored striped screen. But now it works with new ram so I am off to play. :D

Ah Ha!. The RAM...Hows the screen and what not? Do you know what RAM it is they did replace? I dont want em putting it in mine, excuse the selfish questions and all..

Glad youre on your way...17 incher..

Dead On Arrival! X_Entity answered this question for me earlier. Surely you should recieve some sort of compensation for this!

Ok its working but has intermittent bootup problems so looks like a DOA may still occur... Anyway with help of my reseller I'll keep this until a new one come hopefully so I can put all my mac learn' to work. :)

You know its scares me a bit that this stuff happens. Weve paid good money for these computers and you kinda expect that they will fine on arrival...do other PC laptops have these sorts of issues?

Wobbling

On the issues note, I just got my 12" PowerBook about two weeks ago and it has wobbled from day one. I figured that was normal, until I was scanning through this thread and noticed quite a few people citing the fact that their PowerBooks didn't wobble. Is the wobbling a problem that would warrant Apple replacing my computer, or is it just a minor annoyance I'll have to live with?

Regarding Wobbles

I've had my 12" Superdrive 1.33GHz for about a week, and I do have a wobble. - But I don't think the issue is the Powerbook - this thing is very rigid, and even the slightest problem with whatever desk you're working on can cause a wobble. On truly flat surfaces, I have no problem, but even the slightest warp - like on a wooden desk - the wobble comes.

I'd ask all you wobblers out there - do you find the same experience?

This thing rocks! I added a gig of memory and am pretty stoked. Now I need to know what software I must have on here.

;)

My 12" has a little bit of wobble on some surfaces. I find that if I press down, firmly but gently on the two diagiagonal corners that are wobbling that it goes away. Give it a try! I think the wobble issue relates to the laminated method of construction and the very stiff materials involved.

The wobble doesn't bother me any more - the creaking hinge, however, is pissing me off!

Are you just running with the Apple supplied RAM or with the new memory? As NicoMan said the powerbooks are really picky about the RAM. I purchased memory from a third party supplier that matched the specs required by Apple. I had exactly the same start up problems that you were getting, had the memory replaced with a different manufacturer, but the same problem. In the end sent the memory back and ordered from Crucial and it worked, have not had a start up problem since.

I have or had that wobble on my powerbook 15 inch and now it has gone, sorry, it is a minor annoyance you will have to deal with, it is so hard to get apple to replace a lemon, i wonder what their reaction to this would be?
Good Luck

Yes. All companies that manufacture electronic devices have these issues. You have to remember that it's just a small number of machines that have problems. But when you read the board, the problems seem amplified because people without problems don't post. It's like TV--it's not news when airplanes don't crash.

Several questions for mpopkin

Depends
1) Hitachi is the primary supplier/manufacturer of 80Gb 5400 drives to Quanta(company that makes apple pb's for apple)
2) did you Bto a 5400 rpm drive, then if this is so it must be, but do not rely on google to check
3) if it is you are lucky, while hitachi is a great company(used to be ibm drives) toshiba makes better portable drives, i have a toshiba but then again i didnt need the xtra 1200 rpm because it really does not make a signific performance difference, :) Enjoy

it looks like that is correct, my pb is the toshiba mk8025GAS not mk8026GAX

Hello mpopkin, sometimes I don't understand your comments....without no
proof

1 and 2) Now, you are talking about Quanta main hd supplier...I think (read) in this pages, that some people have Toshiba and some people Hitachi

3) Why did you tell that there is no difference between the drives...Did you proof this.?..In this report http://www.barefeats.com/pb12.html (from May 14) you can see that in some aspects like starting applications the Toshiba 5400 (mk8026GAX) is a 52 % faster than the standard 4200...Is this not significant for you?

3) I received my 1.33 pb and I opened...It was a 7447A chip....

Please You must not think that I am angry with you but your comments could be confusing some people

So true. I've been reading these posts for a while and was hoping I wouldn't have the same problem if I got a powerbook. I just got mine this week, 15", and it wobbles like crazy on my desk. However on my kitchen table it does not! My work desk is most likely warped after holding computer monitors on it for years.

Also, no dead pixels to report. Only thing is that the screen doesn't close flush with the case. But it's not so big that it will bother me. Also, sorry to say but I think it looks massive next to the old Ti but it feels much more sturdier. :D

PC to Mac?

Hi does anyone know the procedure for connecting PC's directly to Macs for file sharing?

I can connect via a router, but I want to connect straight to a PC. I have them both connected with a crossover cable, but am getting no joy linking them both up.

Any help work be great

Thanks

Twisted T :)

The Alu IS MASSIVE compared to the Ti. LOL

What is so funny is that its only a tenth of an inch thicker isnt it?
Yet, it feel like ten inches thicker.

I got so used to my old Ti, that the Alu feels like a desktop and the Ti is my portable! ;)

It is or does feel sturdier, but i think that is an illusion.

I don't know if this will work, but you can load a powerbook as a firewire hard drive on a desktop mac by first connecting it with a firewire cable (duh :D) then powering it on while holding the 'T' key (I think). Not sure if a PC will recognize the filesystem on a mac, but if it can maybe it can work with desktop macs too to pc's too.

Note if it doesn't recognize the filesystem windows might try to reformat your mac's drive.....so be careful to say the least :D

I ordered a Powerbook through Guitar Center, and it was a BTO

ANyone else do this, I mean has there been a person here that has ever ordered through Guitar Center, an APPLE product?

Because it seems to be taking forever! Whew~

Could be worse - you could order direct from Apple. We are large educational users and I've yet to see the Apple order arrive within a month of ordering to the correct address.

I mean - do they want our business or not?

Firstly, are you SURE it's a crossover cable?

If it is, then so long as both machines are set up for TCP/IP with static IP addresses in the same subnet (i.e. PC 192.168.0.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the Mac with 192.168.0.2 and again, 255.255.255.0 then you should be able to connect to the PC from the Mac by pressing Apple+K and entering smb://192.168.0.1/

This is assuming you are running Windows 2000 or XP (home or pro) and OSX Jaguar or Panther.
