i get the same message from the fed ex tracking page. my powerbook was supposed to be here today. i called fed ex and they said that our computers are stuck in customs because they did not have the proper paperwork with them. fed ex has not been able to get a hold of anyone in China to get the information.

i cant wait to get my computer! (my very first mac)

FedEx better get their act together. Did you tell them to call Apple?! Trying to reach the shipper/distributor in China probably wont pan out.

Over 3 weeks waiting and still not here!

I am really beginning to believe that I may never see the PB I ordered. Its been three weeks now since I ordered (19th April) and still no sign. I can't understand how they manage to ship machines half way across the world to the US in under a week, but can't seem to drop mine off in the UK within 3 weeks!

Oh well, If it ever does turn up it would be nice, if not, its gonna be a whole lot of money down the drain! :(

Same problems here in Oz...which is closer than US or Europe.

The race is on, who will get their PB first...

PLEASE PLEASE let me have a clear LCD screen! :(

I'm the third person I know of that bought a new 15" with dead pixels.
Two days ago I bought my 15" at the Apple Store, brought it home, and found it had 3 all-the-time dead pixels, and at least 3 part-of-the-time dead pixels.
I took it back to the Apple Store, and without hardly looking at the screen, the guy had another one brought up.

Don't settle with dead pixels, there's nothing worse.

Well I am getting ready to order a new 12inch Powerbook, was curious if anyone is still experiencing any heat problems with it.

It runs way cooler than my 867 Rev A.

i actually called apple and had them contact fed ex. either that approach worked or fed ex finally got a hold of someone in china because my powerbook is now on a truck for delivery!

i hope your new powerbook made it out of customs too.

Any home for a switcher?

Folks,

I just have been spending hours & hours on my PB 12" ...and my first Mac! ....its addictive! :D ...after lot of searching around, finally settled down on Brenthaven custom backpack for 12". ...bought a Bluetake Bluetooth mouse too.

Me being a switcher, would greatly appreciate of somebody can give answers to the following:

- After the first time setup of PB/Mac OS, is it possible to go back & change the Admin name/PB Name? ...it tried exploring this thru System Preferences, but no luck.

- This is a great forum & have been reading it religiously everyday :) ...but is there a user forum specific to Switchers, or mac for users ...where one can raise queries?

Thnx.

Just noticed ....this thread has crossed 1500 hundred mark! ;)

Hey ALW,

For changing the computer name, go to System Preferences and click on the "Sharing" icon. It should give you the ability to set the name. If you want to change User names, Accounts in System Preferences can handle that.

As for a specific place for switchers or questions, I don't know of one single place, though the Mac user community is quite open and supportive so there are lots of places to get info. For instance:

Newsgroup: comp.sys.mac.(whatever)

Then websites (besides the forums available here):
www.macintouch.com, www.macfixit.com, www.macnn.com (forums) and www.computing.net/mac/wwwboard/wwwboard.html are some that might be useful.

Superdrive Failure with new Powerbooks!- Known Issue!!!

I WAS the proud owner of a new Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz. Now the Superdrive will not accept discs of anykind. Spits them out after trying to read them once.

Did some research and many people are having this issue with the new models, as well as the model just before this one. Seems to be that after importing music or data from many CDs, repetitively one after another, in a short time period (I did about 15 music Cd's in 30 min maybe), the drive malfunctions and will spit out any inserted CD. Some ppls problem goes away on its own, only to come back at a later time, others like me, the problem is permanent.
Called Apple and in a round about way, the tech person said its a known issue with the current Superdrives. Anyway, I gotta send mine back now for a replacement AND I am gonna have to purchase Apple Care because the drive will probably be replaced with the same revision Superdrvie which is faulty and bound to fail.

So watch out for this issue. And use the Superdrive ALOT when you first get the machine so if it malfunctions, you still are under the 90day free phone support, etc...
good luck

Bad superdrives!

This is really bugging me,

There seems to have been SO many problems with the ALubooks!!

Now the Superdrive problem rises!
This is really crappy, and to hear that the tech guy was stating that a known issue, this really gets me.

WHy can't Apple works these things out, is there an APPLE curse?

Now i wonder how bad this issue is.
How many bad Superdrives are there out THERE? :(

SuperDrive Malfunction: Update

So minutes before I decided to take the Powerbook to the Apple Store, the drive began working again suddenly. This is what I feared. Its an intermittent problem, like many others have reported. I bet its going to wait until my 90day free support period is up before happening again.

Im sure that if I took it to the Apple Store, they would try to load a disc, it would work, and they would look at me like I was crazy. I wonder if sending it to Apple Care would mean that they would replace the drive, regardless of it working at the time or not.

Can you point us to the sources that you looked at. So far at least from the MacRumors threads this has not not been an issue...

SuperDrive Malfunction: Update

If you do a search in the Apple Discussions in the powerbook FW800 section you will find alot of ppl with the same issue such as:

http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?13@128.LZaVaNmFlM5.0@.688db017/6

It seems to be creeping up more as the days go by and people are recieving their Powerbook orders. When I was on the phone the tech sppt took me thru the standard fixes (which I had tried already) and then put me on hold to check if its a known issue. He came back 5 minutes later and said " yeah, we've been seeing this. We can send you a box to ship it to us, " etc..

On my Powerbook G4 800 I had my combo drive go bad six times. Each time I had to go through the same routine before they would accept that the drive was the problem and fix it. The last fix has lasted five months so far. I just got a new 15" BTO, in part because I thought that I wouldn't have to worry about chronic drive problems anymore. This is very disturbing to hear that this is a known issue.

Still waiting in Aus.

i'm getting really tired of waiting for my 12"PB SD. i've been to the applecenter every week since release and they don't have a clue when they are to arrive. i've ordered mine form them and they said that they had a 12"PB combo come through about 2 weeks ago but thats all they've seen. I was told by Apple Australia earlier this week that Resellers can call a special number to find out where their customers orders are. This should be something to press them to do tomorrow to try and get a real answer.

Visit http://wwwhappymakinggames.com and click on the Windows/Apple image.
I've asked my host to open some forums and he has done so:
general Mac stuff and Switcher stories. There's nothing much in the forums yet.
I am a recent part-time switcher myself and would like to put together a repository of helpful stuff in a single location for new and potential switchers. If anyone has any ideas please mention them!

Most of all: switch, and have fun!

Jeroen.

thnx to hmg & volfreak

hey hmg & volfreak ...thanks for the info ...dedicated forum for the switchers is a good idea ...i did check out other forums ...a first time Mac user finds it a bit more demanding to connect with the level of conversation going on & therefore a longer learning curve.
I am going to catch up on Jeroen's switch log for some quick learning! ;)

ALW
