This is an incredibly stupid question, but does this sync up with iOS? Meaning, if I send/receive text messages on my iPhone, will I get them on my Mac too?

Some issues

Managed to message a couple of people fine - waiting on replies from other tests.

Received a message on my iPhone but then it didn't show up on iMessage.

Still a BETA so there will be issues. I suspect the main issues we are facing will already be repaired before the final version is released!

Locations

Anyone else notice the "Send photos, videos, attachments, contacts, locations, and more" part? Photos... check. Videos... check. Attachments, contacts... check. Locations? Not so much. And can you even do that from Message on iOS? I know you can from Find My Friends, but perhaps this is a sign of more integration in upcoming releases.

Yes it should. Mine does from Mac to iPhone. Some problems with it coming back to the macbook if its a new conversation.

I posted this in the Mac OS X board but it's relevant here...

Unfortunately, in my field of work I'm forced to use a PC in the office. By making Messages a standalone app, I won't be able to iMessage with my friends and colleagues on my computer and will still have to use my iPhone.

It would have been awesome if Apple included iMessage as part of their iCloud web interface (even if they also created the standalone app for Macs). This would have allowed people using any computer in the world (even as a guest) to interact with their iMessage contacts. I thought this was the route Apple was going to take so I'm a little disappointed with the news this morning.

Apple wants to sell more Macs and iPhones. That's it.

It does not appear to work through a HTTP or SOCKS proxy.

That could be annoying for those of us stuck in large businesses...

It also explains why I can't get iMessages on my phone when Wifi is turned on and I am at work...

is there anyway to keep the message up after the status goes to away? the messages clear for some reason when the account status goes to inactive and then you have to search for the contact again to get the message back...
is there a way to keep the message there?

I've looked into the whole number, Apple ID, linking-thing, and it seems to be more useful and better than what it first appears to be...

On your Mac, you can choose to receive iMessages to any or all of your Apple ID-connected e-mail addresses, then you have to choose a Caller ID (which is one of the addresses). On your iDevice, it's the same story. Except for the iPhone, where you also have your phone number.

You could therefore actually have iMessage on your phone ONLY receiving and sending messages to and from your phone number, your iPad ONLY sending and receiving from say an @me.com address and your computer ONLY sending and receiving from say the @hotmail.com address which is linked to the same Apple ID as the @me.com address. This also mean you can link and disconnect any and all of your devices and computer to or from each other.

If I choose the same Caller ID on the iPhone, iPad and MBP (which mean they will all have that address in the "receive message on" setting, any message sent from any one of these devices will show up on all three, and any response will also show up on all three. If I change the Caller ID to an Apple ID-connected address which I DON'T have in the other devices' "receive messages on" setting, any message from that device, and following responses, will only show up on that specific device.

So I can have my iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and MBP seeing all outgoing and income messages, no matter where I send them from, and have all the incoming showing up everywhere. Or I could choose to separate them all from each other.

The only drawback from this is that if someone sends an iMessage to your phone number - it will only go to your phone since you can't add the phone number in the other devices, so any iMessage sent to your phone will only show up there, but if your Caller ID is set to an e-mail address, your response and the following responses will go everywhere...

Frustrating at first!

Ended up with three conversation threads on my phone from the same contact! But now I've deleted all threads, synced my contacts, and everything is all hunky-dory!

Loving this :)

One of my problems was, as a former MobileMe and iTools user, I ended up with @mac.com email, which was being used on my iPad. Syncing wasn't working as expected. I've fixed this now.

Shared ???

Well I got it downloaded but it seems to use your apple ID instead of your phone number.

I share my apple ID with my family and sure as hell don't want them all getting my messages.

ANy way around this??

Settings, Messages, Receive messages on.

Edit which device receives messages to which addresses, then set different caller id's to avoid getting answers being sent to the wrong place

I don't understand that limitation, and I hope it gets addressed in an update. There's no reason that messages sent to your phone number can't route to your Mac as well as your phone. At least not that I can think of.

Found the solution (for me)

I've been watching this thread, hoping for an answer... well, I finally found it. There had to be a way for Apple to sync up your phone number and email account.

I went to the Accounts tab in the Mac Messages app and clicked on the Account Details button, followed by the "View Account" button. This took me to https://appleid.apple.com/

After logging in with my @me.com account, I went to the Phone Numbers section. Low and behold, my mobile number was missing. As soon as I entered it there, the sync between my Mac and iPhone 4S started working!

The other thing I changed (after reading this topic), and I don't know if it had anything to do with it working as well, is to go Settings > Messages > Receive At and click the button at the top to make sure that in addition to my mobile number, it also has my @me.com listed. So I have two entries there now... Phone and Email.

Hopefully this helps others -- it did the trick for me!

I agree completely. With iOS devices it's a bit better, since messages to your phone number will show on your iPad, but you can't add your phone number ass caller ID on the iPad which will cause double message chats when replying...

I just spent quite some time with a friend, having three separate chats on the phone, and some messages only showing on the phone. This is what we found out by trial and error.

Apple REALLY should be more aware of this. I mean, they release a beta and users figure this out in a matter of hours? Come on... This should've been addressed a loooong time ago. Especially since it's been around since the release of 5.0.

I've done all this, but iMessages to my phone number still seem to be sent only to my phone...

Has anybody else noticed message logging (transcripts) appears turned on in Message by default and there is no way to turn it off. I had logging turned off in iChat, and now with Message I have a ~/Documents/iChats folder that is logging all Messsage traffic and I don't see a way to turn it off?

Okay, so I've got nothing better to do...

I've got two e-mail addresses (hotmail and me.com) added in my Apple ID, plus my phone number. Phone number and both addresses are added in the Receive Messages At on the phone, and both addresses on the computer (since you can't add the phone number on the computer). I switched between sender ID's and sent one message to each of the three ID's from each ID. This makes nine sent messages from the phone, and six from the computer. This is the result:

Messages sent from the phone: on the phone there were three separate message threads, one for each recipient. They contained three sent messages each. The only messages received were the messages to the phone number, one from each Caller ID, so there was a received message for each sent to the phone number.

Received on the computer were six messages, all in the same message thread. Neither of the three messages sent to my phone number showed up.

Messages sent from the computer: on the phone, the six messages were divided into the three earlier message threads. Those sent from one ID on the phone showed were in the same thread as those sent from the same ID from the computer. On the computer all six messages showed up as sent in the same message thread (which is the same message thread as the ones received from the phone). The only received messages were the two sent from the same ID as the recipient ID.

I assume you're all intelligent enough to understand what this implies in terms of what to do and what to tell your friends to do if you want to have all messages showing up across the board without having the nuisance of causing multiple message threads, or divide everything between each device, or whatever mix you feel like.

I noticed that as well. HIGHLY annoyed by it, too. Hopefully it's just a Beta thing.

Here's my solution: select your Trash as the folder :)
