Gaaar doesn't look like the new app can be used to control iTunes on your Mac.

Only silver lining is that because they launched this as a new app, they'll presumably keep the legacy Remote around for those of us stupid enough to invest in Apple Airplay for full-home audio. Wonder how long they'll keep that app alive though.
.

I use the remote app for controlling my whole home iTunes audio… So as long as they keep it around that's fine or allow the Apple TV to actually play to multiple airplay speakers at once!

It's a flaw in the apple tv software. You have to turn on the apple tv first then it appears. At least that's how it works for me. Right now my apple tv is off and it says "offline" When I turns it back on it will appear. It does the same thing for airplay
Sadly this does not work. Both are on. It does not show up.

Is it just like previous versions of the remote app that needed to be connected to the same network to function? i rarely have my iPhone connected to my home network, as my cellular data connection is faster than my home wifi and i've got unlimited data...

It connects via Bluetooth.

So all old features gone. Unable to select media to play, or devices to . Basically it's just a remote.
I like it being more simplified. I don't have a Siri remote and a 3g. Apple TV so this is welcome.

But I do get some people want a media controller, hopefully they wont cut the older app.

Apple today released an all new Apple TV Remote app for the iPhone, which is used to control the fourth-generation Apple TV along with older Apple TV models. Announced at WWDC, the new Remote app has been available for developers since June and was released to the public this afternoon.

The new Remote app, which connects to an Apple TV via Bluetooth, mimics the exact layout of the physical Siri Remote for a navigation experience that's streamlined across different input methods. Its design was inspired by the Siri Remote and is a significant improvement over the previous Apple TV remote app.

When content like movies or music plays, the Remote app features a full "Now Playing" view for control purposes, along with a dedicated Menu button and a Siri button. As with the physical Apple TV Remote, navigation through the iOS app is done using touch gestures.

Entering text, like passwords and usernames, is much easier with the iOS Remote app because any text field automatically brings up a keyboard. Full Siri voice commands are supported, as is dictation. Because it includes the same gyroscope and accelerometer in the Siri Remote, an iPhone can be used as a dedicated game controller for playing games on the Apple TV.

The Apple TV Remote app requires iOS 9.3.2 or later to install and it works with the current version of tvOS, 9.2.2. It can also be used to control Apple TV 2 and Apple TV 3 models.

The Apple TV Remote app can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Apple Watch support?

Yep, they updated the Name of it today, since that's all that needs any updating.

No, no, no, no, no. They need to add the ability to stream Apple Music and Apple Radio.

EDIT: What they really need to do is update the Music app to control iTunes.

The Apple TV remote is the worst control. I had hoped they would rethink it...instead we get an App. Figures.

Because those other brands can't design a simple elegant tv. Apple TV would be a complete threat. Has been for years as they watch and wait.

Apple created the modern computer and phone market. They'll compete well and continue their success.
A complete threat? How? Apple couldn't begin to compete at the current market price point. Simple? How hard is it to turn a TV on? How do you make that any more simple than it currently is? I have some complaints when it comes to my TV viewing experience, but none of it has to do with the TV itself but rather the continued clunkiness of cable company required set top boxes, something Apple certainly isn't going to change.
And for my money, the P and R series from Vizio are both gorgeous, in design and the actual screen itself. Minimal bezels, simple layout, very easy to use.

Couldn't care less about Apple TV.

Is the regular Remote app ever getting an update?
What do you need an update for in the old app with the old Appletv? everything works already...

Just in case it isn't entirely obvious (wasn't to me at first :p) this is a brand new app, not an update to the previous app. Couldn't find it yet through search, had to go to Apple's profile page in the App Store app to find it.
Yes, not only that but it doesn't appear anywhere on the iOS App Store for my iPad Pro running iOS 9.3.3. You can't find it with a search, it's not under TV, Entertainment, or the section for Apple apps.

However, it is available from iTunes on my desktop Mac and it appears on the "Featured" page on the App Store on my iPhone.

Pretty sad really, Apple can't even do an app release anymore without messing things up.

Eventually, I bet the biggest button will be for "Apple Music". I am not a subscriber, but I hate the fact that Apple is pushing Apple Music way to far.
Actually my biggest problem with the old iTunes Remote is that it doesn't support Apple Music - but this one doesn't support iTunes so it is even more useless for Apple Music as the AppleTV 3 doesn't support Apple Muskc and the AppleTV 4 doesn't have a TOSlink Optical Audio port, so it's not connectable to my receiver.

Finally, an AppleTV remote app that is almost as good as the Kodi/XBMC remote app.
They've had auto-keyboard launch for text fields since forever.

So has the old AppleTV remote app. In fact, the old AppleTV remote app was the first one I saw which allowed the on-phone keyboard to be used instead of the clunky on-screen one.

No, it can, so long as your TV supports HDMI-CEC and the AppleTV 4 is set up to control its volume that way.

Except it doesn't. It doesn't include remote control of an iTunes instance, like the previous Remote app does.
Yeah, I noticed that after a while. Sorry. I was wrong.

For those that are having issues getting the remote app to "see" the Apple TV, I was just able to fix mine by updating the firmware on my time capsule and rebooting the network. Worth trying one or both with your routers.

Just got my new Apple TV today. So much easier to set it up with the keyboard. Thanks Apple!

The best remote for my ATV3 is the unused buttons on my TV remote. When in HDMI mode, the DPAD, enter, and exit buttons are not used by my TV so I've configured my ATV3 to use them. Now I only have to look for one remote whenever it goes missing.
