Just updated the app. I found that the scrolling up and down on the home screen is extremely sluggish. This didn't happen with the physical Siri Remote or the old Remote app.

I got really excited for a second and then I saw the inclusion of "app" at the end of the title. Give us a new remote please, one where you can easily feel up from down.

Volume buttons on the right, concave Siri button on the left. Not quote as simple as the previous remote or an iPhone, but the tactile difference is there.

There's no magic juice in iOS 9 or iOS 10 that iOS 7 or higher can't do for a simple remote app.
I have many apps released recently that support older iOS versions.

So you're saying there's no chance that there are API that alow the Siri app to talk to tvOS that was released alongside iOS 9? None? No iOS 9 API at all in the app? Good to know.

Pleh... I dont have a siri remote.

I have an apple tv remote, with a stupid search button that is a complete pile of garbage.

Come on apple, you have had siri on teh phone for ages, how about updating your OS to offer it on the tv

Can't really fault Apple for that, nobody understands Dutch -it's a made up language.
;)

Lol, at least Apple thinks so. They've Siri in Dutch for a long time. If it doesn't support Dutch why even sell it here? Oh I know one reason $$$$$

I guess you live in the US. The Apple TV 4 here doesn't understand Dutch and doesn't support Siri. I don't understand why it's even being up for sell as it's quite useless.
That's quite disappointing. Siri should be available for it. It's one of the main inputs! Maybe a future software update might rectify that, well one would hope that's what happens!

Sadly, no.

When I downloaded the new app, I deleted the old as I never used it to control iTunes. When I looked at my Watch, the remote app appears to now be a default app. Haven't been home to test whether this is any different but it's really interesting. I'm not running any of the betas.

Hopefully this means that maybe Apple will make it a default app in iOS 10 (that's deletable) and adds it as an option in control centre.

Seems to be impossible to set this up with my Apple TV 3rd generation without having the original remote (it's somewhere. . . ).

I use the Apple Remote app because I can never find the actual remote. If I open this new app it says I have to enter a number on the Apple TV, so I multi-task on the iPhone back to the original Remote app...as soon as I do, the option to select iPhone under remotes disappears.

Not a great user experience. I have an iOS app controlling my Apple TV, but in order to use this new app to do the same thing I have to find the original physical remote, which the app had replaced for me. Should have been an update.

A complete threat? How? Apple couldn't begin to compete at the current market price point. Simple? How hard is it to turn a TV on? How do you make that any more simple than it currently is? I have some complaints when it comes to my TV viewing experience, but none of it has to do with the TV itself but rather the continued clunkiness of cable company required set top boxes, something Apple certainly isn't going to change.
And for my money, the P and R series from Vizio are both gorgeous, in design and the actual screen itself. Minimal bezels, simple layout, very easy to use.
Vizio seem fairly okay comparing to the other competition, and for a few seconds, I did think they might be onto something, but a closer look and they've got some issues that bug me, namely, poor choice of surfaces and joins.

Surfaces should be clean and not diamond etched that yell,
"I'm a diamond etched surface, look at me!". There should be little visible joins as possible also, especially if it's the same material and the part the user will see the most. This is where Apple exceeds, they don't do the superfluous, in most cases Apple refine and refine and go ultra clean and pure in their design (not iPhone 6/6s). It's not just personal taste at play here either. The Visio P series reminds me of an Apple Cinema Display from 2004, but one that has been poorly executed. Visio R has its own issues. Apple's own designs from 2004 are highly refined compared than Vizio's current unresolved design in 2016, below.

Competitors are very concerned that Apple will release an actual TV on the tvOS platform because it will sell very well-- there's no doubt about that.

This is Vizio P, 2016, from their website, with unnecessary joins and surface textures:

This is Apple Cinema Display, 2004, clean surfaces, and hidden joins:

Why do you want this new one? Its meant for the 4th gen and includes siri on it only for the 4th gen. Your remote app does everything it needs to...
[doublepost=1470131504][/doublepost]As far as Apple competing in the tv market it has to be as good as samsung and sony (LG being top 3). Video has decent tv's but they don't compare to those 3 brands. panasonic being 4th as in quality imo. Id like an oled apple Tv. Which will never happen.

Very disappointing. When this new app was announced late 2015 (or early 2016, I forget), I was hoping for a totally new approach where ATV4 and the iPhone would create added value for each other. But it's just the same as the old app: a counter-intuitive technical way of trying to mimic the remote. Why does Apple not try something more original instead of just showing ugly black buttons?

I can imagine so many cool features where both devices are integrated:
- support for handoff and continuity
- while watching ATV4, the iPhone could automatically show additional info about what your watching. How cool would it be if IMDb were to pop up when watching a movie? Or the suggestion to install a related iOS app for a TV Show?
- for years, TV makers have tried to create interaction with their audiences, but we're still stuck with SMS voting. Why not introduce something new there?
- support for Airplay streaming from ATV/iPhone to multiple speakers
- Listen to headphones connected to your iPhone when watching ATV4
- etc

Again, very disappointed with this new version.

Am I missing something or if you lose the main remote or completely move to this new app there is no way to wake up the Apple TV from Sleep???

Nice app, works well. One thing I don't understand is why they don't mimic the TV screen on the app. There's really no reason I should have to look at my TV while using this app. None at all.

I'm glad Apple released this ahead of the Fall software release. Too bad it's not the same app- but I only use the remote for my Apple TV anyway.

you want the whole image on your phone to look at? how would you scroll through it? or do you want each image being able to touch? Confused by this

Has anyone tried to pair more than one Apple Remote app to the same Apple TV 4?

No third party remote works with Siri.
Different uses for different folks. I use the Siri part of the remote approximately never. I have my universal remote (a Harmony 650) set up to control the Apple TV (and everything else), but I end up just using it fire up the system and then switch to Apple's remote because I like it better (with a Griffin Survivor Play case on it to improve ergonomics). When the Apple TV's Siri gains the ability to work with HomeKit, so I can ask the remote in my hand to change the lights, then I'll use Siri with the TV more.

Did anyone else think the TV Remote App was just an update to the regular Remote app?
For a moment. When it didn't show in the Updates tab of the App Store, I clicked the link at the bottom of the article and attained enlightenment.

Picked up the Griffin Survivor case for my remote a few months ago. Has fixed the annoyance of not knowing up from down without looking. Still not used to the buttons though.

Gaaar doesn't look like the new app can be used to control iTunes on your Mac.

Only silver lining is that because they launched this as a new app, they'll presumably keep the legacy Remote around for those of us stupid enough to invest in Apple Airplay for full-home audio. Wonder how long they'll keep that app alive though.
Why "stupid enough"? I use AirPlay every day and it works quite well. I'm not sure why they'd kill it since AirPlay is built into quite a few devices. An updated Remote app for iTunes would be nice I guess, but the one there now works fine. I'm able to navigate playlists, queue up songs, adjust volume and even create, edit or delete playlists. I can also route audio to multiple sets of speakers and adjust volume independently on all of them -- they stay in sync and sound great. Connection is robust -- as long as iTunes is running and my network is up, it's fine. In fact, my neighborhood had an internet outage the other day and AirPlay still worked perfectly for in-home streaming of audio or video to either my AirPort Express-connected speakers or my 3rd gen. ATV. All in all, I'm very pleased with AirPlay and it does everything I want.

I think what he was saying is he usually doesn't use Wifi at home to access the Internet because cellular is faster, so he'd have to turn on Wifi just for this app to work.

I'd prefer it to work over Bluetooth too for a different reason: It would be nice if we could use the app with its virtual keyboard to enter long Wifi passphrases, e.g. when connecting the ATV to a new network or just changing the passphrase after the initial setup. This is obviously not possible if the ATV needs to be already connected to Wifi for the app to work. Entering long passphrases with the regular remote is a pain. Alas, the app doesn't appear to work over Bluetooth.

Not sure what people's issue is with the wifi setup. No pairing or any of the other annoyances that Bluetooth has -- just put your device on the same network and you're good to go.
