It has to be waaaay faster than Safari 3.0 to beat Firfox 3 beta 4, which is amazingly fast. Firefox 3 beta 4 is also way more stable than safari 3.0.. Well, I'm updating now. I'm probably not going to change back to Safari anyway, since Firefox got way more features and have a better RSS system

I just noticed that there's now a spell checker. No idea if it's been there before but I was typing on a forum and it noticed I typed a word wrong.

Been playing around with Safari for a few minutes and the first thing I noticed was how terrible it is at starting up (like 3.0), I get the spinning beach ball and around 5-10% of the time it quits.

In general though, I can feel a rather nice, though subtle, speed boost that is definitely a step forward as far as I'm concerned.

What it REALLY needs is a PB G5 - then you'd see snappy!

Seriously, apart from a vague impression of snappierness, it looks and seems pretty much the same. I'll just have to wait until it opens a page that it used to crash on to see whether stuff has been fixed...

Maintainability

I agree this update is still way below Firefox 3 beta 4 in terms of performance.
Again why did Apple choose Webkit opposed to Gecko?
FF for the win!

According to Dave Hyatt, it was because the KHTML source code which Webkit is based on was simple, lean, maintainable and well written, while Gecko was a huge mess of spaghetti code.

The Mozilla team have apparently done some excellent work in the meantime, but from their blog entries the complexity of the code has clearly been causing them a lot of headaches.

Who needs IE7 anyway....unless your on Windows XP and have to use Windows/Microsoft update....
osx safari 3 is "Ok"

uh yeah i utilize it because somethings dont run on firefox and/or safari or osx that i need to use, so i dont know why its a problem for apple to make something that doesnt screw up fonts in the first place.

btw no need to get this mac-fan-boy attitude, who cares people use variety browsers get over it

Empty your cache!

When I first installed, loading pages was dog-slow and I was getting beachballs all round. However, I then emptied my cache (from the File Menu), and now everything's flying.

And yeah, holy fark it's fast. I feel like I'm running a new computer.

Great news:D I was thinking about it yesterday when my parents complaint they won't use Safari on Windows until there is a Dutch version, and now there is! It is also snappier, I like this version, will try it for a while over Firefox 3.04, and test if it works better.

Time will tell but very good job Apple:apple:!
What is the next spannier update:rolleyes:?

I had this strange problem where Safari hung and every process I activated after that also stopped working (dock, menu bar, terminal...), rendering my MacBook unusable with a hard reboot as the only way out. I use Opera now, until I can be 100% sure that Safari 3.1 fixes these problems.

Its probably because the site designers have coded for IE, rather than Web Standards, you should report the problem to them.

IE 7 is rubbish though at displaying websites, and it causes web designers large numbers of headaches over supporting it.
