Unless you got extremely short and stiff hands, command and any number up to 6 (7 is a stretch, 8's right out) on the number row, shouldn't be a problem to reach with jsut the left hand.

While this may work efficiently for up to 5 tabs, the CMD+TAB (ALT+TAB for Win) style method is a lot better. In the case of Opera, it uses OPT+TAB, so it doesn't clash with CMD+TAB which as I'm sure you know, is used for Application switching.

Not to be a fan-boy but I would go as far as to say that IE 7 *is* the biggest source of headaches in the wonderful world of website design.

...When you live by your own rules...

Nope - IE 7 is lightyears ahead of IE 6 (although that isn't saying much) ;)

I'm looking forward to a standards-based IE 8 (as I do some web design myself)

Anyone else having unexpected behaviour in GMail? I can't use the shift key to get upper case characters any more, as it gets interpreted as a shortcut. :(

Seems OK here, but it is really annoying in GMail.

*Note* - Seems like a GMail thing rather than Safari, I can switch to Plain Text view and it appears to work as expected...

gmail EATS on safari... ever try opening a link from GMail that opens in a new window... oh look, the status bar automatically appears...

all you firefox/opera fans out there... i might agree with you on how "fast" those browsers are if, you know, flash wasn't EXCRUCIATINGLY slow on them... until then, fastest browers are Safari 3 and IE7 (for flash at least).

SWFAddress is still kicking on this 3.1 release... which is great...

Safari 3.1 is nice and quicker than its predecessor.

However, I have grown accustomed to the webkit nighly builds.

It would be nice to see a comparison between Safari 3.1 and the latest Webkit.

What do the nightly's do that this doesn't?

If only they'd fixed the bugs so that it'd work with https behind a proxy. It still locks up and crashes... :( I'm stuck with Firefox for now when at a customer that uses a proxy.

Are you sure because I would still think that Safari would inherit the new Unifided look even under Tiger.

Strange

I'm sure I'm on Tiger, and I'm pretty sure I haven't installed any add-ons. Where should I look to check this?

I like Safari. It's neat, simply, and fast. But as for functionality and overall efficiency, Opera beats any browser available IMHO.

I highly recommend people give Opera a good try. A "good try" meaning, use it for a couple of weeks or so, not just a quick 10minute "trial".

One thing that I hate with Safari (& Firefox) is that you need to use both hands for the keyboard shortcut of alternating between tabs. This is annoying, especially in Safari when the cursor is in a text box, the tab shortcut key doesn't even work.

Opera really is not so great. Tried to Love it long time and its always bit me back.

I wonder if part of the reason for releasing a Safari update now, is to undermine Firefox 3's release?

i.e. The Firefox 3 betas are a lot faster than Safari 3, but they are not such a leap forward compared to the new Safari 3.1 release.

Of course, this sort of competition between the Gecko and WebKit engines is good for both sides :)

Safari is prettier compared to Firefox when on my PC, but I hate that it doesn't let me scroll down websites by holding down the scroll button. Don't really see any load boosts on the Windows side.

Have yet to download 3.1 for the Mac.

Edit: And the Macbook is now running it. Yesh, it is fast!

Proxy problem fixed!

Hey, hey! finally fixed the proxy problem. We use automatic configuration scripts on our proxy here, and this is the first Safari release that I've found that can penetrate our firewall using the auto-config proxy.

Interestingly, Safari 3.1 was the first release I could use at work. Seems like there was another product whose 3.1 version was the first usable one...

C'mon Apple....a required restart? I understand you are hooking Quicktime into the OS.....but what's the deal with Safari?!?

-Kevin

It is part of the core OS. There is an HIWebKit view that is in Carbon and a WebKit Cocoa class too - so many many apps use it. iChat, Mail, and lots of third party apps.

To anser my own question:
Apparently, safari 3.1 is using a webkit branch more than 60 days old.

Right, but that makes sense. You don't put in fairly brand new code like that into a core OS framework. Latest and Greatest is great in beta or dev branches of Linux, but its not great for security or bugs.

IDK, Apple's developing structure is so murky, I really have no idea how they grab code from webkit, how they decide where to start, and how they incorporate new progress of webkit after their branching of safari 3.1 (apparent not much at all).

I think of no reason for those who use webkit nightly to "upgrade/downgrade" to safari 3.1.

Problem with webkit nightly is that you aren't patching your core OS webkit which means that Mail, iChat, and any other app using the OS webkit will not be patched for the security vulnerabilities and so on.

So keep using WebKit Nightlies, but update to Safari 3.1 as well.

Fonts

With this new safari, it does not show the fonts that I had enabled or disabled to speed up the printing options window.

Does anyone know what fonts this site uses?
