Safari web content process frequently goes outta control....utilizes more than 100% CPU! And then there is the issue of tabs reloading automatically...what is up with that?

Just updated, but it's still lacks responsiveness. I'll stay with Chrome for now, although I do prefer Safari's UI over Chrome's.

Obviously you are not running Lion... this has to be the most memory hogging unstable software I have ever used.

How is it obvious? Yes, I am running Lion, 10.7.2. My experience with Lion has been no worse or better than Snow Leopard, Leopard or Tiger. Memory management has been just fine for me.

The computers at my old Job were Windows 2000 and they had a few years going without a restart. Just saying, your comments sounds so smug, but if it does make you feel special, then I suggest that you forget about the update and just try to go years without restarting it. If it's something that's going to make you feel good, then why not.

Well if the W2K computers went years without a restart, then someone wasn't doing their job and applying the security updates that Microsoft pushes on a monthly basis. I would not want to have been that IT administrator when a security breach was discovered; because without those patches, it does happen.

My comments earlier in this thread were intended to be jovial, it's unfortunate others didn't see it that way. Oh well, such is life. :)

Check Safari web content process in the Activity monitor...my money is on that process

Cheers, In the meantime I had rebooted again and now fans have gone quiet. If it does it again should stop the process? or should I stop it anyway? This is my first mac so still learning so many thanks for your input.

Hopefully this will fix the disappearing close buttons on tabs I've been experiencing...

Is this "white flash" the same thing as when occasionally everything on the web page will suddenly scoot down to the bottom right hand corner, or is that something else? (or is it me?)

I am not sure this is completely fixed and it might be a worse.

I ran the webkit javascript benchmark from: http://www.webkit.org/perf/sunspider/sunspider.html

In 5.1.1 it ran pretty fast and beat in some FF8 in some tests. Now when I run it in 5.1.2 the CPU spikes, the temp rises and it does not complete after 5 minutes.

When AdBlock is enabled, it's pretty slow and does not finish, I think. After disabling all extensions, the benchmark runs blazing fast on my machine (MBP 5,1 C2D 2.8GHz, OS X 10.7.2, Safari 5.1.2)

For everyone on here who has complained about lack of features/functionality, you can send your suggestions here:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/safari.html

Consider it DONE! Just complained. I know it will fall on deaf ears, but it's insane that Leopard users are stuck with and old version of SAFARI, yet Windows XP users get brand new updates.

Very bad support Apple to your own customers, some of whom spent $3000 on Macs that Apple no longer supports for even the latest SAFARI!

And yet you support Windows XP?

People still use Safari?

------------------------------------------------

I like Google Chrome for 'speed', but the 'Reader' in Safari is a Godsend!

So, I use Safari a lot for sending and/or saving articles.....which is a snap using the View Menu Reader'.

Are we sure it's not some third party plug-in involved?

Do you have Flip4Mac installed?
I'm not sure, but I think I read somewhere it could be involved.

We'll seem I have removed it an so far I haven't got the ”reload all tabs” issue again.

Still no "save as" for downloads?
It is amazing how those designers are so blind, keeping such a basic UI functionality out. Completely deal breaker for me. Fire those guys right now please.

Acually that's a simplicity feature in the new Safari. all downloads saved in "Downloads" which also can be accessed easily in Safari. If you need to put it somewhere, just drag it afterwards... I guess its not for everyone :)

Thank god! I've been waiting for this update and nearly replaced my Mac because of how bad Safari 5.1 has been.

And since when did a browser update need to be 49.2MB in size? This is crazy stuff.

Do you rank browser quality by download size or something? Who cares?

And it requires a restart. This is as bad as Internet Explorer 5 years ago. Chrome is faster, smoother, has a much better integrated search/URL bar, and never requires a system restart. What gives?

Chromes rendering engine isn't built into the operating system.

What are you stealing from the web that you need a save as? Just kidding.

It's not there because it's a ridiculous excess. Very few people save content directly from the web...those who do, use more intuitive and modern ways....like dragging and dropping.

For clickable downloads, there is virtually no reason why you need to rename the file immediately, if ever. If you're that obsessed, you rename it any time you want.

For most people, when they click download, they want it to DOWNLOAD, not be presented with an are you sure dialogue, which is exactly what a "save as" dialogue serves as.

As far as I can tell, Safari has had this for a long time ?!

Performance wise, it feels the same. But i don't know why I have 5+ GB active memory  Only Mail and Safari are open and the total memory for all process in Activity Monitor adds up to ~2.6 GB.

Where is my remaining memory?

Funny that Safari (5.1.1, the update hasn't shown up for me yet) is stuck on a beach ball as I'm reading this thread. Although it's still letting me navigate the page and post this. Weird.

Previously I have asked what the reasons are that should prompt me to upgrade to OSX 10.6 or 10.7, but no reply that I have read. Anyone have a reason that you would like to share?

I'm not sure what you're asking...why you should upgrade from 10.5 to a newer OSX? No way to answer that without knowing what hardware and OS you're running.

But there's still one extension feature that I've never been able to find. I want an extension that'll simply stop websites from automatically putting a cursor into the website's text field (like the site's search box or whatever).

Because what happens is I go to a site, it automatically and with no visible cue puts the cursor focus into the site's search field, then I hit the spacebar to page down like I always do except now it doesn't work because it just types a space character into their stupid text field, and then I close the tab and safari pops up a warning dialog that I've input text into the page and that I'll lose the text by closing the tab. Arg! So annoying.

Or worse, sometimes I am typing my master password into the 1Password extension, and without warning, my full password will be visible in that site's username field.
