I don't know how anyone can think that such POS is remotely comparable to OS X.

My organization has just switched to it and I already can't stand the horribly unintuitive MS Office ribbon interface (much worse than Office 2011 for Mac)...not to mention that the other day Outlook deleted an entire .pst folder with my archived messages (same think happened to at least five other people in the office).

My company just got us designers new machines - Windows7 obviously. We pushed so hard for Macs, but IT pushed back harder. They didn't want to have "TO LEARN A NEW OPERATING SYSTEM" lol. It took them weeks for them to figure out how to get the new machines to talk to the server. Then a couple more to get them ready for us. Then a couple more to get all - well, most of the kinks worked out. My Wacom still doesn't work. I was really hoping Win7 wouldn't be too bad. Boy were my poor little hopes dashed. It's funny to see how they tried to implement the OSX interface and just not follow through. And now the "new Folder" buttons are in completely different locations in different dialogue boxes. What a train wreck. We still get low memory warnings. Thats just the begining. Unbelievable. Needless to say, I'm looking.

I still have PPC's that run as well as new. They are among my favorites even though I have the latest MBP & MBA. There's a lot to said for a well sorted PowerBook G4. My Nov 2002 15" Ti is a shining example.

Yup, I'm still using my 2002 PowerBook G4 also. Battery is shot (and not worth the cost to replace) but as long as you keep it plugged in, it works like a dream.

I am not sure this is completely fixed and it might be a worse.

I ran the webkit javascript benchmark from: http://www.webkit.org/perf/sunspider/sunspider.html

In 5.1.1 it ran pretty fast and beat in some FF8 in some tests. Now when I run it in 5.1.2 the CPU spikes, the temp rises and it does not complete after 5 minutes.

Do you have any extensions enabled? They can slow down the test. Also, it's supposed to spike, it's a benchmark designed to stress your browsers. Chrome and Firefox has the same CPU spikes that I saw in Safari.

I don't. It's not like I'm deliberately avoiding it, I've used it on a rare occasion.

It's just that I preferred Firefox on my Mac's & PC's until Jan of this year. Then work switched to Chrome, the number & kind of extensions they offered was perfect for our needs.

Within weeks it seems like the selection exploded to include everything I had in Firefox at home and more. Therefore I switched my personal Macs to Chrome & haven't looked back. Over the last few months the Chrome store has added a windfall of excellent free Apps & Extensions.

They are so useful & time saving I'm very impressed, completely happy, and definitely staying with Chrome. It's so fast on my SSD equipped Macs & PC's all maxed out with ram, it's almost unbelievable.

There is all the extensions I need right here:

Duuuuude. I looked at that page once a couple of weeks after safari extension first came out but that page was very bare so I never went back. I just followed your link right now, and holy eff! I just downloaded like 5 new extensions that do EXACTLY what I had been looking for extensions to do for the past few months.

But there's still one extension feature that I've never been able to find. I want an extension that'll simply stop websites from automatically putting a cursor into the website's text field (like the site's search box or whatever).

Because what happens is I go to a site, it automatically and with no visible cue puts the cursor focus into the site's search field, then I hit the spacebar to page down like I always do except now it doesn't work because it just types a space character into their stupid text field, and then I close the tab and safari pops up a warning dialog that I've input text into the page and that I'll lose the text by closing the tab. Arg! So annoying.

I can't see why Apple are issuing restarts for this update, its standalone and its not IE (so its not in the kernel)

Unless it updates perhaps a library that is loaded on login? But then all it would require is a relog.

Maybe just download it manually?

I hope they've fixed the bug where enlarging video embeds on a page (Via QuickTime or HTML) would make the screen flash white, or sometimes stay white/black.

If you want the latest WebKit, you might as well pull it from the WebKit project page, it uses a similar UI to Safari, and uses the same bookmarks etc.

And plus, the latest build of WebKit is faster, and has many bug/fixes new features that Safari lacks.

Here Safari randomly zooms a specific portion of the page. Very annoying.

You can skip the restart, if you actually wanted to keep your good uptime.

In Terminal, become root with sudo -s (enter your user password when it ask)

Type softwareupdate -l , and it will update its source.

Then type

softwareupdate -i Safari5.1.2Lion-5.1.2

And voilla, it will ask you to restart, but it won't do it for you. And Safari seems to be fine without restarting, if any issues arise. Just relog.

Not sure RAM usage has improved much, 28 tabs open currently consuming 1.3GB (WebProcess is 904MB and Safari 400MB) which is similar ish to what it was prior to 5.1.2.

Safari usage is a bit higher and WebProcess a little lower but it appears to release memory which it didn't seem to do so before. Closing 4 tabs drops usage slightly too WebProcess is 896MB and Safari 396MB)

Why would people torture themselves and use Safari, one of the worst browsers out there.

Apple, how about you implement the most ommitted feature of Safari :

"The abilty to easily sort book marks alphabetically"

Why they still haven't added this is beyond me, IE has had it for years and years

Yes, but Safari still flashes black and sets my Windows 7 colour scheme to default whenever it tries to load the official Twitter website. WHY?!

For those like me, who've been holding at Safari 5.0.5 under Snow Leopard due to the missing contextual menu for pdfs and especially the lack of a way to open those pdfs easily in preview, there's good news.

I don't know how long these methods have worked but there are 2 ways to open a pdf from Safari in Preview:

  1. If you hover your cursor over the lower portion of the pdf while it's open in Safari, one of the options on the transparent pop-up is to open in preview.
  2. If you select a portion of the pdf while it's open in Safari, even merely one word, then the contextual menu contains the options that I'm used to seeing, including open in preview.

Cool!

People use Safari on Windows!? WOW. I tried it once and I found IE a more reliable and less buggy experience.

Safari 5.0 is the last version to be available for PPC Macs/Leopard (so currently your version should be 5.0.6). Safari 5.1 and later is Intel/10.6 and later only.

The latest SAFARI is available for Windows XP but NOT Leopard users?

ARE YOU KIDDING ME APPLE?

Better support for Windows than Apple Macs?

Un-freaking believable!

BOO HISS BOO!

The first Intel Macs were introduced in January of 2006. The Core Duo MacBook Pro. That's almost 6 years old! I think the last line of PPC Macs were introduced over 6 years ago, perhaps the Mac Mini (September 27, 2005), and the iMac G5 2.1 GHz 20" iSight (October 12, 2005)?

The latest discontinued date are the newest PowerMacs G5s and Xserves G5s, they were discontinued August 7, 2006. That's well over 5 years ago for sure. (I guess you were right, 5.3 years ago).

And Windows XP was discontinued when???

C'mon Apple, this is ridiculous treatment to your own customers and loyal followers!

Just amazing to me that SAFARI updates are available to XP users, but not Leopard or Tiger users.

It's just unbelievable to me.

While I have an Intel Mac, I still don't have Snow Leopard or Lion and have never seen a compelling need for either, but I guess Apple is forcing an upgrade on me while still supporting Windows XP. Go figure.

One of my Powermac G5s died this past month and I switched that machine out for an old Powermac G4/Mirrored Door and I was amazed at what a completely capable machine it still was after all these years.

Yet Apple gives better support to Windows XP users?

That's just insane.

Still no "save as" for downloads?
It is amazing how those designers are so blind, keeping such a basic UI functionality out. Completely deal breaker for me. Fire those guys right now please.

After launching Safari and Reload(ing) All Windows From Last Session, only the web pages in the front-most tabs load. Pages in the background tabs do not load until those tabs are selected and their contents made visible.
=/
Seems like a good thing. I disabled the autoreload in Safari because it took so long to reload all the tabs.
