iOS9 beta4 was released on
21 July to developer
& 22 July, Apple released the same beta to public testers.
So only developers were able to download at the time even if Profile were downloaded

Are the El Capitan public betas pretty stable? I'm signed up for the beta program but haven't upgraded because I'm concerned about stability.

No beta is perfect and even though 1000 folks might say yeah its stable you could be the one person for whom it ***** the bed. And getting back into working shape could be hours, even days.

If you can handle that risk or even being without a computer for a few days, why not back up your stuff and go for it (never load a beta without backups). If it would be an issue cause you are in school, use it for work etc then either do without or slice off a partition to load it onto and play there

Hopefully my question doesn't get lost in the sea of off-topic Yoda posts, but..

Does anyone know if apps being submitted to the app store of iOS 9 features? Or if they're allowed to include those?

word from the BF is that no they can not. They can get away with minor bug fixes so long as its not a big new feature item and it doesn't break iOS 7/8 compatibility. But something like picture in picture is a no/no.

I'm hoping this update fixes iCloud Backup problems!

I was just thinking about that. I had to replace my iPad cause i dropped it. I went and had it done on the way home from work without thinking about how I didn't have an iTunes backup, just iCloud, and I couldn't restore it. I couldn't restore any iCloud backups. so i have been stuck on a fresh setup for almost a week. firstworldproblem sure but also annoying.

Um, I just downloaded ios 9 beta 2 (beta 1 worked pretty well!) and it's not going anywhere. First progress bar was fine, albeit slow. Second progress bar isn't doing anything. How should I proceed? Help! It's been about 20 minutes of nothingness . . . Thanks!

Are you talking about after you did the "slide to upgrade" then I think there was the white background screen with the black apple logo? My iPad Air 2 stopped on that screen both times I tried with iOS 9 Beta 3 as well as with iOS 9 Beta 4 (same as the Public Beta 2). This time I ended up doing a DFU restore and pointing it to the iOS 9 Beta 4 .ipsw file I had on my PC and then restored from my backup I took before I installed the beta.

Yes...that was always known that those on public beta with the public beta profile wouldn't get developer previews.

Ok, so the issues with Mail since Mavericks or Mountain Lion (can't remember which broke it) have been well documented in multiple apple discussion forums and elsewhere online, so please don't act like it is not a well-known issue. My accounts are with Gmail, both regular and Google Apps and they both had issues. Just like every other bug, it doesn't impact every single customer.

I'm sorry you have trouble, but I own two Macs and have configured a lot more with different email services for my clients. I have yet to run into the issues you are experiencing. Maybe I'm just lucky.

All I know is that some ISPs may proxy or interfere with your email access in some way.
And some junkie email servers don't like to get polled with multiple instances of email retrieval by an email client. Actually, I remember dealing with this email issue for a client back in 2004, but never again.

I had more email issues with Outlook on Windows using IMAP than anything else until Outlook 2011 came out.

I find that the Airplay to my AppleTV is very flakey from my iPhone 6 Plus. It wasn't as flakey on the first public beta. It seems to stall randomly and disconnect from my AppleTV. Especially using the YouTube app. Is this affecting anyone else?

So far I am enjoying the El Capitan Beta... inasmuch as it can be enjoyed to this point. I downloaded it and installed it on a USB 3.0 flash drive and have been running it on my new Macbook Pro. Since it's on a USB drive it's a little sluggish, but absolutely workable. What I love so far is the ability to hide the main menu bar and I also love the setting to enable smart minimizing and expanding of windows by double-clicking the title bar. What I very much dislike is they've removed the three-finger-drag option in the Trackpad System Preference. This is a feature I use all the time without even thinking, so I am hoping that they have just not added it YET and it will be there in the final release. I also found it a bit slow to restart - after selecting restart it takes close to 2 minutes to actually restart. This could have everyhthing to do with the fact that I am running it off of a USB flash drive though, so take that bit with a grain of salt and post your own results as a comaprison.

I just installed the beta this evening so I still have some playing around to do. Will report back soon with thoughts.

Does anyone know if apps being submitted to the app store of iOS 9 features? Or if they're allowed to include those? I know in previous years that was a big no no, but with them releasing public betas, I'm wondering if that's a thing of the past now.

Specifically, I'm wondering if the picture-in-picture might happen for YouTube, Plex, Netflix, etc before the fall*

*Obviously this depends entirely on the developer as well.
As has been said not till it's a gm but what devs can do is fix there current app to run on iOS 9 providing it dosnt use any ios9 api's

I've had a couple of El Capitan builds running on my 2011 MacBook Air and they have for the most part worked pretty well. Mail was problematic at times on the past build, but so far seems more stable this time.

I have however, lost my Calendar information in the Notification side bar. Nothing's there for today and what's upcoming. Bug report filed. Worked OK in previous builds.

I have tried signing out of iCloud and then back in, turning Calendar notifications OFF then ON, etc., all to no avail. Just curious of anyone else is seeing this? I have a MacPro on 10.10.4 that's my primary machine, so I can live with this annoyance for now!!

I must admit I am quite glad to see that almost everything I try to do with Aperture seems to work well. The only exception is the animation at the top center of the Aperture window when I invoke one of the Nik Plugins ... it runs very rough. Seems like the plugin itself works fine. I'm still a hold out ... I love Aperture and feel very comfortable with it. I have LR and I'm trying .... but I still prefer Aperture!!

On the other hand, iOS 9 on my iPhone 6 seems pretty solid so far. Had one hiccup but after a hard reboot, no repeats.

Cheers!!

Ken

Has anyone gotten the new transit directions feature to work on an iPhone 4S? I don't see the option in the maps application. Only options I see are: Drive, Walk, & Apps.

Very eager to have this update and it appears to fix many visible bugs that I had in Beta 1.
  • Apple Music now works again
  • Spotify does not look distorted in the list view
  • App switching is smoother
  • Phone app does not lock up
  • Safari does not appear to hang at times
  • Mobile data does not vanish yet. (Only had it a short time mind)
  • Wifi appears more stable
  • Bluetooth had no issues this morning in my car
  • Car forward / backward functions now work again in my BMW. (Not sure if anyone else had this problem as I couldn't find any reports).
  • Whatsapp messaging doesn't get "stuck" forcing me to close and reopen the app.
There are however a lot of issues surrounding other parts including
  • app switcher showing inaccessible icons below the top four.
  • Phone is very jerky upon start-up. It takes a while for it to "settle down".
I will continue to report all problems I get to Apple as I continue testing. Hopefully over time this will be a great release. I'm massively impressed with the improvement in battery life, especially in battery save mode. I've had the phone last 1.5 days without charge and that's with quite a bit of use. That was impossible with iOS 8.x, and even out of this mode, I get an entire day at work without plugging it into the charger with plenty of power left (50-60%), when I get back to my car to drive home. Very impressive!

If you have a 5GHz network, try forcing the AppleTV and iPhone to connect through this network. I always found 2.4GHz networks were always flaky.

It was a known issue in the last beta as I recall, not really something Apple decided to do on purpose that needed its course reversed or anything like that.
Sorry, I thought I'd made my comment so far over the top that the sarcasm would be quite obvious. Apparently not. The thread on the last beta release seemed to be about 1/3rd people complaining about the "intentional" removal of the volume shutter function.

While I agree that betas have different levels of stability, the point being made is that if the beta was truly stable it wouldn't be a beta anymore.

The question was not "Is it 100% stable?" ... OP asked if the betas have been "pretty stable" so far, which is a reasonable question (and, in fact, they have been).

I find it interesting how buggy a major OS release can be just a couple of months before release. Apple must have a bloody lot of engineers.

Before release? I find it interesting and mesmerising on how a major release can as buggy as Mavericks / Yosemite and iOS 7 / 8 well into the release cycle

Is there a way to check if TRIM is still enabled is OS X after upgrading from PB 1 to PB 2? I enabled the Apple TRIM on PB 1 with their command "sudo trim force enable". But how do we check to see if I need to do it again?

I have an 2G Apple TV and an iPhone 6, and only audio AirPlay is available. This was also the case in PB1.
