LOL, they screwed up because they didn't make what you want, what else is new from the Mac community. :D

It's not just about us. I know a lot of people who use the included headphones. I also know a lot who lost them/choose to use other ones. This "removing the controls from the device" is not a good thing for a lot of people.

Well, the last thing in the world I need is yet another iPod. However, sake of argument, I can't wear an ear bud in my left ear. How can I control this unit? Do the ear buds disconnect from the controller module?

Nope, the remote is part of the cable itself.

Essentially worthless

Until an alternate control device is created this ipod is worthless to anyone who does not want to or cannot use the apple ear buds. Remember, you can't even play a song without the controller. Athletes already know the ear buds fall out so scratch them off the list. Anyone that wants to use the ipod with external speakers is out of luck. I guess the user this is designed for is someone who is going to sit relatively still and doesn't mind the average sound of the ear buds. I'll wait until a miniplug converter/controller comes out then I'll buy it.

I HATE IT! I absolutely hate it.

The only one was way better. Multiple colors and better design.

Push and hold? Push push hold? Apple got it totally wrong with this one.

do you think ...?

do you guys think that this is the reason of slogan in Macworld 2009

"even small talk will be big"
VS.
"small talk : the first music player that talks to you"

is it possible that
Apple prepared this campaign for Macworld
but they (may) faced some problems with each others.

so Apple decided not to launch this shuffle
and expand to cancel next year joining at Macworld.

just think as conspiracy theory ^_^

I don't find this move all that offensive by Apple, namely because of the idea behind the shuffle: lose a bit of control for added convenience in carrying and using while moving.

But the fact is, the majority of iPod users continue to use the included headphones at the gym, at least from my observations. Those of you who wish to use your own headphones: the Shuffle is not made for you. It is for a broader, less finicky audience.

I disagree completely with this. The audience has just NARROWED significantly. The shuffle seems to be targeted to workouts, and tactile sensation loss, at the expense of size (not like the old shuffle was cumbersome), seems to be a boneheaded move on Apple's part. I really question their market research. And adding an adapter would easily make this thing a little ungainly. It seems LESS convenient, and much more difficult to use while moving. I can't wait to hear people's road test of the unit while jogging.

WHAT?!

The voice over is the OS's built in text to speech, which is leaps and bounds better in OSX than windows.

If you watch the little video on the apple front page, when the woman gets to demonstrating the sound of the mac and pc voices, the PC voice is much cleaner and clearer to my ears. Maybe you can change the voices on the ipod as you can in the system prefs... but still computer talking sounds like rubbish no matter what os you're using.

Yeah, it's too bad they dropped the idea of a Shuffle that doubles up as a thumb drive - using a cable to plug it in is a no-go for me, so I'll stick with my 1st gen Shuffle.

It's too bad, because I love the idea of getting rid of the buttons (think about it, this is now basically nothing but a "smart" headphone with a tiny thingy hanging off of it). And most importantly, they now have the two features that I wanted the most on my 1st gen Shuffle:

1- support for playlists and
2- support for FLAC!

Is it wishful thinking that they could release a firmware update for the 1st gen Shuffle with the above features? Almost certainly.

I completely agree on the thumb drive thing. there are 16 gig drives that are smaller than this thing, and not carrying an adapter to charge it would be uber convenient. With no tactile sensation, it will be difficult to use... especially while running, without looking at it. Had they just added a retractable USB to the original design (versus a cap), and given it a clip, I would have been happy. But that's just me, I guess.

It's cool... if you like the apple earbuds. If I got one, my friends wouldn't think it was an ipod. I think VoiceOver is useful, but a bit of a gimmick.

They should've put the new controls on the side of the actual iPod. That way we could use our own 'phones.

Also: Dark gray? WTF?

Worst iPod design EVER. Seriously, only the hardcore fanboys are going to "love" this. Why do they insist on making the shuffle smaller and smaller? The old design was good enough and it had buttons!!

- Proprietary earbuds/headphones
- Proprietary USB cable
- Lame computer voice that talks to you
- Only 1 button to do everything...lol...The Onion is going to love this

I think Apple makes it way to complicate for user to use. The iPod Shuffle should be made for the market that even your mom know how to use it, with simple buttons like volumn up and down, fast forward etc. Now they make it like the most complicated thing ever. It feels like you need to input a password just to skip a song.

Of course it will be easy for most of us tech-savvy people (though I am still kinda confused how it exactly functions), but not everyone are like us.

And I don't really like the design. The clip is nice, but the front feels kinda cheap.

dude i want one of these! they look sooooooooo cool!

I have an iphone but am thinking about selling it to get a normal flip phone and an ipod... dont ask me why i just want a normal flip phone! lol

when/if this comes out i will def buy it

I didn't bother to read all 15 pages.

Have people figured out that there will be an adapter for 3rd party headphones with buttons on it, or are people still needlessly bitching about how they won't be able to use their own headphones? It seems much more functional to not have to dig around in your pocket to change songs.

Seems pretty obvious to me.

I personally think it's cool that Apple essentially made a USB flash drive with a headphone output. That's an awesome idea, and I'm sure people that are in the market for something as simple as a Shuffle will love it. It's not like you can't get a fully functional Nano for slightly more.

There are times to bitch at Apple, but this is not one of them. This is the cheapest product Apple makes. Can you imagine how cheap these things are going to be in a year or so?? Probably $40 for 4GB, and I imagine they'll release a bigger version eventually, in addition to similar color choices as the Nano.

Yea, its such an awesome idea that Creative did it in 2003. Plus Creative has a new one with buttons and 4GB memory for $35

The 2nd gen was like this too. All they did this time was make it smaller, more proprietary and remove the controls.

Its funny that waiting for the voiceover to go over your playlist... will feel like waiting in a customer service call with the recorded voice trying to go over all the options.

"...to speak with a representative, press 4; to repeat all the command, press the # key."

oops, I forgot to press it when it announced the playlist I wanted to listen, looks like I have to listen through the options all over again.

Err, it still sounds like **** in any case. I mean, hearing that voice in that tour was just embarrassing. The text to speech on my garmin sounds leagues better than Leopard's. Doesnt sound much better than the first time i was screwing around with text to speech, in DOS back in the 90s. Still completely jarring, erratic, and robotic.
