scenario: mountain biking, rugged terrain, wanting to change the song, tugging on the controls, tugging on the ear, ear piece falling out, look down to find ear piece, look back up, tree, death.

love it.

The controls are very easy to find, but your scenario is very funny :D

Already a bump...

First the 'VoiceOver' feature takes up space on the unit. Instead of nearly 4g you get 3.77 and has to be downloaded when it's first synced.

Also there has already been a firmware bump to 1.0.1.

General impressions: It's too small and gets very hot while charging. Like 99.5 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit according to my temperature probe. For syncing you get a nearly 5 inch USB 'cable'. That's it. Good thing that I bought the 1st gen USB syncing stand. That little thing has come in so handy so many times...

I think generally that this will come out to be a poor seller for Apple. It's too new and there are too many rough edges. IMO...

Those crappy MP3 player in China can be as small as you want and it still has a screen and buttons.

This POS is like a joke to the minimalism movement. Maybe this is what Apple wants - make a joke to the minimalist.

My local Apple store have them in stock although they are not on display for some odd reason - its been a few days since they had them in stock.

The old 2nd gens are on display instead

Probably because you can't try it without using Apple's headphones (at least for now), which aren't exactly sanitary for sharing among strangers.

I was at the apple store yesterday drooling over the macbook (she'll be mine someday!) and remembered the new shuffle was there so I wandered over.

It took me all of literally 2 minutes to get used to using it. Its REALLY not that hard at all.

Once you actually read the instructions, which took 30 seconds, and start using it like it was designed instead of holding onto traditional methods its simple.

Long, well-reasoned review of the 3G shuffle from AppleInsider:

Apple's 3G iPod shuffle reviewed: a step too far?

The third-generation iPod shuffle was virtually destined to pose a problem for Apple before the first concept sketch was ever finished. When you've largely mastered a design but are forced to refresh it with something new and cheap to maintain interest, where do you go? For a company lately guided by "less is more," the answer is minimalism; and as we'll soon see, that guides every facet of the new iPod, for better or for worse.

I have a new shuffle.

It is a dramatically over price tie clip that seconds as a money clip for monopoly money.
Oh yeah it comes with this white wire so you can choke yourself for spending $80 on it.

If they were smarter they should have included an accelerometer or a swipe pad that controls the volume and such...

its so small i don't think an accelerometer would work too well. It'd get lost in your pocket and you'd be constantly changing songs.

Thats true...maybe a lock feature to disable the accelerometer with software when you're moving

Or add the volume keys from the side of the iPhone/iPod touch...and a switch(like the one the puts the iPhone into silent mode) to switch between volume or next/back song

Or put the same type of controller that is on the headphones mounted in the side of the unit.

Actually, going from that idea, Apple could have had two of those keys, one for volume and one for tracking and toss in the switch for play/pause.

The Creative Muvo did it years ago, Apple should have done it.

The Creative Muvo was great. I had one. And then I got tired of burning songs from iTMS onto CDs and ripping them into MP3s. XD

That said, I still don't have any qualms with the remote mechanism; when I'm using my Sansa with my iPhone's headset, I reach for the clicker by reflex and when I realize nothing's happening, I remember Sansas aren't compatible with the clicker.

I thought that review was a good look at the new shuffle.

Why they redesigned the thing is curious. I feel it was an excuse to push headphones. They should have just made them cheaper. Once under $30, they would sell tons to the kids and work out freaks. 4GB is just too large for something without a screen.

Actually I kind of like it although I am bummed that it already shows scratches from being in my pocket... :(

The 'voice over' feature taking up space was a surprise though... Couldn't they have done it differently? And I thought it was supposed to be a female voice?
