I havent had time to check this entire thread if someone said this already, but speaking to Apple online, they said the only issue on an X would be the slight variation in XS camera location, other than that it would work. I'm going to try it. (my slight concern is if apple have disabled it at the drivers/hardware level for the X then i suspect the online sales people wouldn't know that yet)

Wouldn't even entertain putting one of those Amazon $50 battery cases on my iPhone. To each their own.

Battery case is not that high tech. Battery itself aren’t even worth much. The Apple Battrty Case’s battery is probably from one of Chinese supplier the same Amazon battery case use.

I have had buy some battery case from Amazon, they work just expected.

I know.. and think of all the extra at no cost benefits of those cheaper designs! like.. they cover the attenna's for you, no extra charge, don't have built in passive attennas to boost signal, no extra charge, don't come on and off easily, no extra charge, and don't have wireless charging, again.. no extra charge!!!!! because if you have the money and desire for an external battery case, why would you want to make calls?

So you are saying battery case from Amazon will make you phone unable to make call? Is that what you saying?

I mean, $129 lines up with higher-end offerings from Mophie and such. Sure, there are $50 Amazon battery cases, but do you want to put one of those on your $1k phone?

I have no problem put these 50 dollar Amazon battrty case. Why not? It is not like battery cases are such high tech thing m.

I don't want to use any of these items, but the prices are still ridiculous.

I have a Anker portable charging bank I carry with me and it's capable of charging an iPhone 0-100% at least 6 times over. That works well for me. Obviously everyone has their own solution to topping up the awful batteries our devices come with...

Anyone have any pics of the bottom? I'm trying to figure out if this charges the phone wirelessly or if there's a super low profile lightning plug on it.

Also, hooray, no dead animals!

While you might be ok using a 50 battery case, most are not.

Consider those "battery packs"... this new case is essentially giving your phone a larger battery. No need to turn it on/off, it's just there... HUGE difference

So can someone who has actually used one explain exactly what's happening when you use one of these? Judging from the screenshots everyone posts, your iPhone is in permanent "charge" state while this case is on keeping your phone at 100% until the external battery trickles down to 0%? So effectively the same as using your iPhone while plugged in?

I get that the Qi charging is nice to have, but I guess I'm okay with a small external battery pack on stand-by mode in my bag when the need arises. Curious to see though and hoping they have at least one on display for users to test how it feels in hand.

Wish they also made one for the X
No physical or electrical reason it wouldn't work... that I know of.

I had the Apple battery case on my iPhone 6 for the last year-year and a half before I got the X. I'd consider one again.

My biggest concern is weight... the iPhone6 was a ultralight aluminum shell... adding some weight was noticeable but not all that bad.

iPhoneX's chunky steel chassis is close to that same weight of 6+external battery already...

Many of us have been talking about it. Nobody knows for certain yet. Crossing fingers.

There's no way Apple would cover the speaker and microphone, thus rendering the talking portion and media consumption portion of the phones useless.

I mean they even have a design guide for case manufacturers, dictating how big cutouts have to be.

Report back. It'll be on my shopping list in the fall before the XS and these cases get discontinued... to extend the life on my then 2 year old battery X.

Oh, I agree. My $$ is on cutouts. But, wouldn’t it have been nice if Apple showed from the bottom angle in their photos? Seems strange that they didn’t.

I had the Mophie battery case for the IPhone 8. What I didn’t like was to use the battery you had to click a button on the back to begin charging your IPhone. Also the uSB cable to charge it took forever to charge both devices and didn’t support quick charging nor wireless charging. So the new Apple battery case will be awesome since it supports the USBC fast charging setup and wireless charge as well as being more integrated with the iPhone

Meanwhile.... On Amazon for 29.99.....

Apple today released new Smart Battery Cases designed for its 2018 iPhone lineup, including the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.

Available in black or white, each Smart Battery Case is priced at $129 and is designed to add extra battery life to the iPhone. The cases are similar in design to the past battery case option Apple offered for the iPhone 7, with a bump at the back to house a battery pack.

Each case provides a varying amount of battery life depending on device. The iPhone XS Battery Case, when paired with the iPhone XS, offers up to 33 hours of talk time, up to 21 hours of internet use, and up to 25 hours of video playback.

The iPhone XS Max with the XS Max Smart Battery Case offers up to 37 hours of talk time, up to 20 hours of internet use, and up to 25 hours of video playback.

The iPhone XR with the XR Battery Case offers up to 39 hours of talk time, up to 22 hours of internet use, and up to 27 hours of video playback.

Apple has not offered a Smart Battery Case option for the iPhone since the introduction of the iPhone 7, presumably due to the wireless charging feature in the iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. There has also never been a battery case for larger iPhones, with prior cases limited to the iPhone 6/6s and iPhone 7.

Rumors in December, however, suggested that a version compatible with Qi-wireless charging was in the works, and Apple's product listings confirm that the new Smart Battery Cases are indeed compatible with Qi-certified wireless chargers.

As with the previous versions of the Smart Battery Case, the new options provide an intelligent battery status on the iPhone's Lock screen and in Notification Center so you're aware of the remaining charge of the device.

The cases charge wirelessly as mentioned above or via Lightning and Apple says faster charging is available using USB-PD compatible chargers. Lightning accessories, like the EarPods with Lightning Connector, are also compatible.

So Apple design philosophy is for thinner and thinner, at some expense of battery size. And improved battery life solution is then a fatter case at additional cost...

Incomplete.

A solution that increases battery life for those that need it.

Just read the forums. Many people get by just fine with the XR and XS Max an XS. Those without constant access to a wall outlet that need more battery life who would rather not carry a separate battery pack...well this is a fine solution indeed.

$129 BWAHAHA they must be smoking crack

Im sorry, Im an Apple fan and owned every iPhone since the 3GS but they've lost touch with reality in recent years.

I'm with you, I got on with the 3GS too and have been loyal since, but the last 3 years or so I've been constantly disappointed. Every time I expect something new, innovative and unique it's a frill or minor tweak or removal of a port/function. In the words of Steve Jobs "You have to start with the customer experience and work back to the technology." It seems like instead they are focusing on the technology and iterative updates and not the combined user experience then making the technology fit that the best.

Phone is heavy enough as it is, and I just have the regular XS 256gb.

I'm sure some use cases would make sense for this product but I have had great luck with purchasing multiple cheap wireless chargers and leaving them anywhere I go regularly. I'm not on my phone 24/7 so there is plenty of time to charge. I think the only time I've dipped below 50% is the night I didn't quite get it on the pad right. One at home, one at the office, one at each of the in-laws homes, I just need one in the car.

EDIT: Unlike Mophie, this case/battery protects the bottom lip of the phone. I foresee some Mophie owners upset with cracked screens.

It will work fine. I use a iPhone 7 case on my work iPhone which is a 6S because the 7 case has a bigger battery than the 6s. The camera doesn’t fit properly in the cutout but no issues with performance.

Not only that, but when the antennae get blocked, they ramp up the power use. So a bigger batter might not last as long as a smaller case that doesn’t block signal.

Excellent point - hadn't thought of that! That additional power dissipation and resulting battery capacity reduction would indeed occur.
