Oh dear, Steve hasn't even been gone for that long and Apple is already making huge stupid decisions. The "New iPad"?!?! Are you kidding? Why not just iPad 3 - keep it simple stupid!

What are they going to do when they come out with the 4th iPad model - the "newest iPad" or "new new iPad" or better yet, "new iPad 4". Sheesh, this is retarded.

Aside from that, the iPad itself is pretty cool, I'd be curious as to the quality of the pictures it can take, even though its only a 5 megapixel camera.

You do realize it's just called "iPad"...right?

"The new iPad" simply means it the new "iPad".

I have no idea how people are thinking they are calling it "the new iPad".

They would never do that. Please....sorry...but, please.

A little bit of research and looking around would have given you the answer. Or if you were to buy one, you would see it's just called "iPad". Or if you watch the TV AD...at the end it says "iPad".

iPad

They're simply doing what they doing with other hardware. There's no MacBook Pro 2, or MacBook Air 3, or iMac 4, or Mac mini 5. The iPhone and iPad, I think, are the only Apple hardware lines that ever had numbers, unless you count the Mac II, IIxc, IIci, etc, but that's ancient history. Expect the number to go away on the next iPhone, too.

Shall I go on?

Exactly. It's called the..wait for it...

iPad

This is no different then the saying "The New Camry"..the car model is called the "Camry"...the "new" just telling you it's the latest model.

Man some people are ridiculous.

Hopefully smack you over the head with it for your ridiculous belief it's called "the new iPad"

Software update

YouTube: video
As it always does when it releases a new product, Apple has produced an elegant television commercial for the new iPad. Unsurprisingly, the ad focuses solely on the retina display, something that Apple feels sets the iPad apart from the other tablets on the market.

The ad doesn't talk about specifications or price. Instead, it shows the iPad being used to edit a photograph, read a book, watch a movie, and draw a picture.

I haven't been able to update to version 5.1. It says: "contacting the iPad software update server" Help!!

A suggestion...never upgrade on the first day when everyone else and their mother is.

I just can't wait!!

All this hype for the iPad when all it has is a new screen. That's the only difference. I'll wait for the iPad 4.

I use mine for development work as a CS major and use my macbook for literally and almost everything.

CS majors don't use 10% of the processing power of their Macbooks. ;) Writing code, especially college level course work is not ressource intensive at all. But... writing code on a tablet would be a major PITA.

Are you kidding me?
When the MacBook Air was updated, did they call it MacBook Air 2? No.

I think it's a good idea to get rid of the whole number thing. It makes it much more integrated with the computers in a way, it just makes sense.
Plus, when they make the 16th generation of iPad, saying "Hey I have an iPad 16!" will just sound stupid.
I wouldn't be surprised if they got rid of the numbers on the iPhone when the next generation comes out...

I've seen plenty of people who have posted this and then others post screens of them coding on an iPad and they say it's not that bad at all...so I guess to each their own.

Who got through and ordered? My guess is they are out of stock within the night.

I can post you screenshots of coding on an iPad, it doesn't make it a comfortable experience though. The screen being half hidden by the keyboard is one of the biggest problems, then there's the whole crouched position...

(yes, I know about "docking", but docking an iPad really reduces its mobility compared to a laptop... might as well just use a laptop).

You should not

This is a great beginning, but can the new iPad replace a MacBook?

I want to know if I can get by with an iPad in place of the MacBook, or do I need a new MacBook?

I have an iPad 2 and it was not very good for typing papers because of the keyboard and websites don't always work on the iPad and make you use the mobile version.

4G? Why bother?

You can use up your entire quota of bandwidth in 10 minutes, then AT&T throttles you, if you're lucky (if you're not lucky, they charge you by the MB). It appears we have the technology, but no data plans to go with it.

If Apple expects to lead the post-PC market, they need to think way outside the box like Steve did. iPad could have included:
More basic memory and ram.
A 10 megapixel camera.
Production invironment. Not everyone uses only Word and PowerPoint to earn a living.
A stylus, for Pete's sake.
External USB or even Thunderbolt.
And finally, but not completely, mend relations with Adobe and allow Flash compatibility.
Post-PC implies replacement. I am sure that the direction to smaller, more portable devices that amplify our ability to create, build and think are the future. I am disappointed that Apple didn't take a larger bite and present a device that is little more than an iPad 2 with a high resolution screen.
I remember the last time Apple was without Jobs and that very nearly destroyed the company. I hope history isn't repeating itself.

Apple is already leading the Post-PC market. Adding the things you suggest would make the iPad a bigger, heavier much worse product that has no sense of itself. The battery life would also be terrible. You're basically describing every Android tablet that is about to come out.

"delivers on 16th" question

i am assuming by the wording, we will actually have it on the day it launches in the stores correct?

All this hype for the iPad when all it has is a new screen. That's the only difference. I'll wait for the iPad 4.

So what's your definition of 'MULTIPLE' if this stuff listed below is the 'ONLY' difference...

  • Retina Display: 2048 by 1536 pixels 3.1 million pixels
  • 44% greater saturation
  • Dual core A5X CPU
  • With quad core graphics
  • 5 megapixel iSight camera
  • 5-element lens
  • Hybrid infrared filter
  • Apple-designed ISP
  • Video recording at 1080p
  • Voice dictation
  • HSPA+ with a max downlink of 21 Mbps,
  • Dual carrier HSDPA with a max of 42 Mbps
  • LTE with a max of 73 Mbps download

i am assuming by the wording, we will actually have it on the day it launches in the stores correct?

Well that is if you can get one in stores. When the iPad 2 came out, all the Apple stores around here in NOVA were sold out for weeks. If you want it, better order online before they sell out. The guy I was talking to at Apple fixing my order (the constant order drops caused me to get a model I didn't want) said they think they got at least 10 million hits on their site today and that was around 7 pm est..

4g lte

If you don't have 4G LTE in your city and you buy the 4G ipad, is it still 3G compatible?

They're still available for pre order so it would seem to me that Apple made a few more for this year's release. :) Last year there was no preorder at all.

All this hype for the iPad when all it has is a new screen. That's the only difference.
Yes, but what a huge difference that is. It's where I was hoping computer screens would be 10 years ago...so sharp you can't see the pixels.

Why won't Apple listen to the smart people...

If Apple expects to lead the post-PC market, they need to think way outside the box like Steve did. iPad could have included:

The thing isn't even released yet, and already you've decided that it doesn't have enough RAM for the imaginary tasks you have lined up?

A 10-megapixel camera is "thinking outside the box"? How is that?

"A stylus, for Pete's sake." The world is waiting for Apple to release a stylus, because until then, you can't just go out and buy one??? For Pete's sake, indeed.

Flash???? Isn't that argument long dead and buried (much like mobile Flash itself)?

Sigh.

Get ready, everyone. It's not just the new iPad. It's the new "Apple is doomed!" iPad.

Thanks for the insight guys.. I don't think an iPad will ever replace my MacBook, but it will make a nice addition between the iPhone 4S and the MacBook, since I can't read iBooks on my MacBook
