This is a great beginning, but can the new iPad replace a MacBook?

I want to know if I can get by with an iPad in place of the MacBook, or do I need a new MacBook?

This is all on you. Personally I love my setup right now, iMac for home, iPad for away, with that being said I have a 16gb iPad which i dock a lot since there isn't a lot of space I delete/add things according to my needs.
To the average basic user I'm sure they would be fine with just a iPad, for me I like having a real computer, and physical keyboard to be fully productive with.

I like my new iPad, or as I call it, my new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, Apple ][.

Why on earth would anybody vote down to this question? Sorry I really don't know your needs some people could get by, but not everyone.

More pixels is cool, but will the ipad still only store reduced-size versions of synced photos, and only allow restricted zoom levels of full-size photos ?

I guess Apple has been ready for this iPad release! Almost 10 hours later and it is still in stock for release day shipping. Maybe their won't be the huge lines in front of the stores we have seen in the past. I mean lots of people got the iPad 2 over the holidays.

Also just curious why would someone pay an extra 130 bucks and a monthly fee for a 4g connection?!?!

anyone else find apple marketing sickeningly cheesy. i don't think i've seen an apple ad without a cheesy kid smiling and doing something cutesey. *puke*

Oh dear, Steve hasn't even been gone for that long and Apple is already making huge stupid decisions. The "New iPad"?!?! Are you kidding? Why not just iPad 3 - keep it simple stupid!

What are they going to do when they come out with the 4th iPad model - the "newest iPad" or "new new iPad" or better yet, "new iPad 4". Sheesh, this is retarded.

Aside from that, the iPad itself is pretty cool, I'd be curious as to the quality of the pictures it can take, even though its only a 5 megapixel camera.

Think about it this way, Apple is off to a new start since Steve passed away. So think of this "new iPad" as a way of stating the fact that Apple has to continue their products but reinvent them without Steve at the helm. As a Marketing major, I can honestly say that they're doing a good job making a transition that is very hard for consumers to accept.

I also believe that this is actually a giant leap forward in technology, for most consumers. People in most blogs are trying to bash a product that is not necessarily made for them. To put it in perspective, it would be as if I bashed Apple computers for not being as good as Alienware to play in. If my main usage for a computer is to play, then I should get an Alienware and not a mac.

I hope that answers your question for why the name, and I'm gonna enjoy that cam and retina display as much as you :D hehe

pre-ordered mine 4 hours ago w00t

I have an iPad 2 and think I might of used the camera twice! It feels so weird pulling out this huge device to take a picture! Maybe that is just me. I will stick to my phone and real camera to take the pictures! :D

As others have replied, it depends solely on your usage if you can use an iPad instead of a MacBook. But I do have a more complex answer. My father, who is 59, used to have a MacBook Air because he needed it to sync his iPad to, after about a year when iCloud came out he finally let go of the MacBook Air and uses only his iPad. He works in construction, management and real-estate, and I can tell you that his iPad is all he needs.
For me it's a whole different story, I use my MacBook Pro to play WoW, type extensively long documents, use the hardcore functions of Excel and to do some specific work related things that I can't do on my iPad. But for the most part, I could get by with an iPad no problem and just use the computer I have at work for those hardcore Excel necessities.

Some people like not being chained to WIFI.

For Apple there are a few extra parts involved... cellular radio, GPS, etc.

And extra FCC regulatory fees...

Plus a nice little extra margin for Apple ;)

It's great that the new iPad has photo editing capabilities... but without a USB port or card reader port, how are photographers going to transfer photos onto the device?

This commercial is boring me to death like most other Apple commercials in recent years. You'd think a company that stands for creativity would come up with something better.

Do people but this because it's a new Apple product

or do people here also evaluate the product before buying? If like most recent Apple products this one here bores me and fails to surprise me, I'm not going to buy it just to play the nice fanboy. I was among the first to adopt the Iphone, it was innovative. But now, after seeing the Iphone 4 and 4s I switched to Android. I use Apple but I'm not married to Apple.

you can't drag and drop between windows and documents on an Ipad, you can't precisely select a point in your text, when you're scrolling web sites you always have to be careful not to touch on a link... It's great for reading on the couch but not for work. And if you want to do anything a bit more intensive, like movie editing, you're stuck with the horrible Imovie. You can't even store documents locally. Ipad i not for everyday office work.

As it always does when it releases a new product, Apple has produced an elegant television commercial for the new iPad. Unsurprisingly, the ad focuses solely on the retina display, something that Apple feels sets the iPad apart from the other tablets on the market.

A very nice article. But Apple does not always make a TV commercial when they release a new product. Was there a TV commercial for the Apple Battery Charger? No. Just one example. But I think you get my point. Fix the inaccuracies in your article.

Thanks.

The voice transcription feature of being able to dictate notes and emails will be useful for students who want their prof's lectures transcribed automatically for them. Fits right into Apple's eBooks endeavour in education. I wish I had this when I was a student. ... May be I'll take some night classes in C++ just to make good use of the new iPad.

You really need to think before posting.

Apple are dropping the numbers, and rightly so. Since the iPad 2 will likely still be sold for at least 6 months more, they are simply putting 'new' there to allow people to see the difference. Once the iPad 2 is dropped, it'll just be 'iPad'. If you cant figure that out then I'm sorry but you shouldn't be allowed on the internet. How stupid can you get.

I don't think it's silly to question that name... http://bit.ly/aBhIEh

"What iPad do you have?", "The New iPad."

In a couple years:

"What iPad do you have?", "The New iPad, the one that is two years old."

I hope this is just a temporary naming scheme that will be replaced by iPad3/iPad HD once the dust settles.
